Truth Or Beard | Penny Reid

This was cute and saucy, but I also found it a bit forgettable. Jessica has had the biggest crush on identical twin Beau forever. So when she and a friend see one of the twins out in the wild and Jessica is visibly in heat, naturally the guy teases and kisses her. But...but...DUN DUN DUN. It isn't the friendly Beau, but his surly twin Duane. Seriously, even identical twins have some tiny little tell of difference and if you're in love with one, ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'd hope you know that difference. It was funny, but sometimes it seemed forced. I appreciate that Jessica was bold but she also had ZERO chill when it came to these bearded twins. How about just a modicum of dignity and spatial awareness? Therefore was a sub-plot about a motorcycle gang that felt tossed in just for something to break up the couple's heavy petting and Jessica's personal reasons for keeping Duane at arm's length, ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick despite becoming intimately introduced to his arm, was the stuff of New Adult plot contrivances. Overall, a light pick.

Acerbically funny tale of a group of elderly upper middle class Brits who get themselves worked up over intimations of mortality from a voice on the telephone. There is much discussion of wills, some attempts at blackmail and the discovery of secrets old and new. If you squint you can see a #MustacheOnCover #Booked2021

Cinfhen I spot the mustache 🥸Hope you‘re doing well!! ♥️ 3y
LeahBergen I liked this one, too! 3y
merelybookish This made me chuckle! 3y
EvieBee I want to read this. I heard the first chapter read in character and thought it was hysterical. 3y
CarolynM @EvieBee It would be a good one for character reading - lots of dialogue🙂 3y

This book was my pick for #Booked2021 “Translated into English “. It is #6 of Zola‘s 20 book Les Rougon-Macquart cycle set in (and critical of) 2nd Empire France under Napoleon III.

The story follows the political career of Eugène Rougon and exposes all the corruption and cronyism of politics. The best character was Clorinde Balbi, likely based on the real life Countess de Castiglione, a woman who is as power-hungry as Rougon himself.

Cinfhen Could have used for #MustacheOnCover too 🥸😉cool collage 🥰 3y
Ruthiella @Cinfhen Thanks! Indeed, I could have also used it for the mustache category! 😂 3y

Enjoyed the first half more than the second half. I liked listening to the author read her essays and the 2000s nostalgia. Some parts were snort out loud funny, others were strange.

Really interesting: partly because racism and gentrification are huge issues in Toronto right now. NF about a young White man elected mayor of Yonkers NY who implements a ruling to desegregate the city through creating subsidized housing in mostly opposed White neighbourhoods. It alternates between politics and stories of diverse racialized residents who are affected.

Reformed bad boy meets movie star in the second installment of the Winston Bros series. I think I liked this even better than the first, although it could have been shortened a tad bit. Very funny characters and all the Winston Bros are swoon-worthy! Can‘t wait to get to Cletus‘ story.

This book was just not for me. A few of the stories were okay, but overall, not my taste. Honestly, I should have bailed early on, but sometimes I can be stubborn about a book I really want to like!

On the plus side, it helped me knock out a prompt (#MustacheonCover) for #Booked2021! 😄
