so-so

(1978) This was the bestselling book of 1978, not so much a novel as a series of interlinked stories set on the Chesapeake Bay, from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The nature writing is pretty good, but the characters are mostly unpleasant, with ideas about race that are doubtless historically accurate but also not something I want to spend 850 pages with. Which is a me thing, really: Michener accomplishes what he sets out to do.

Tove_Reads He really does, but for sure his books are in some way about dated for our times. I am reading The Covenant now, it‘s similar style, good, but too long 2y

swynn @Tove_Reads Ooh, I'll be reading The Covenant in September, since it's the bestseller of 1980. I'm a little apprehensive, since I know it's about South Africa and worry it'll be more of the same: pretty good writing, but way too much of characters it's too hard to like. 2y

swynn Long. But I liked it; I first read it 'way back in grade school when the tv miniseries aired, and loved it then. WhenI reread it for this project, I was surprised by how many scenes made a lasting impression on me. 2y

Focusing on 3 families, Michener illustrates history,1600-1970s, of the Chesapeake area.I loved the first 300 pages and then the life stories of his characters in each generation became a bit banal and repetitive.BUT M. is a fantastic storyteller, researcher. Slavery, shipbuilding, religion,geography are just some of the topics he focuses on.An accomplished writer of dialogues, settings-this is not the last Michener book I'm reading.

COMPLETED for #chunksterchallenge2020 ... 1,024 pages of historical fiction covering several hundred years in the lives of intertwined families in the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland. This book was OK but it didn‘t wow me. I think I‘m a different reader now than when I read Michener in the ‘80s. Still, it felt good to check this off my chunkster list.

ljuliel Good job 👍🏼. I‘d probably be the same if trying to read a Michener book today. I liked the ones I read but it was quite a long time ago, and doubt I‘d have the patience to slog through his first 100 pages of rocks and earth and water to get to the actual story. At least you completed it. 4y

Amiable @ljuliel That‘s kind of why I set my chunkster challenge goal every year at 100 pages per week. That‘s pretty easy to attain (for me) and if I‘m bored I can put it down after 10-15 pages and go to something else without feeling guilty. It really helps me to keep momentum going through slogs. 4y

ljuliel That makes sense . I guess it‘d be a good way to complete those huge ones. I‘m not good at reading 2 books at once , so that system wouldn‘t work well for me , but I‘m glad it helps you and others. 4y

Amiable @ljuliel I get it — I used to be a one-book-at-a-time reader. It sounds counterintuitive, but I had to learn to juggle multiple books in order to finish some of them! Because if I hit a rough patch I would put it aside —and then just not read at all. So reading 2-3 simultaneously helps me complete them —I read the one I‘m in the mood for at the moment. Weird, I know. I do make sure to vary the genres so I don‘t get confused. A fiction and a NF. 4y

ljuliel Nothing wrong with that. We all have our own systems that work best for us. I sometimes wish I could juggle multiple books, but I‘ve been a one track mind sort of person my whole life , so I probably won‘t change now. I guess I‘m on the Old Dog / New Trick Road. 4y

3.5 weeks into #chunksterchallenge2020 and I‘m running a bit ahead. 👍🏼 It helps when the chunkster is an e-book and I can carry it around with me. 😀 Those years that I pick a 1,000-page book in hardcover make me question my sanity. 😬🙄

Amiable @Yoricke_SouthAfrica I believe I read at least one or two Michener books back in the '80s, but I can't remember which ones. I had a love affair with huge sweeping family saga chunksters back then, so I know I must have picked up some of his stuff. He's the master of the genre, after all! :) 4y

Amiable @ljuliel I'm sort of “meh“ about it. I enjoy it while I'm reading it, but I'm not in a huge hurry to pick it back up again when I put it down. You know? It's a fairly easy read, at least. I mean in terms of it not being a nonfiction book with facts that I feel I need to process and understand and remember. But it's great for this challenge because I can read 100 pages in a week with no problems while reading other books at the same time. (edited) 4y

ljuliel My favorite is Centennial . This was good too, but not as good. The further along you get in the story, it gets better because more characters are added , which makes it more interesting. Keep up the good work. You‘re doing great. 4y

Sunraven I was considering The Water Margin, a book about Kuan Yin, and the Tale of Genji (though I‘ve since realized the first two are only 1000+ pages in the ebook editions and not in the print 😓, while the last is actually 1000+ pages)...

...but after my last comment, I ended up starting the four-volume Anthony Yu translation of The Journey to the West, which is apparently 1,880 pages total. So, there‘s that. 😆 4y

Amiable @Sunraven You don't have to pick something that is more than 1,000 pages! A few others have chosen to read chunksters that are approximately 850-ish pages. Your new pick would count as TWO chunksters. 😃 4y

Sunraven So I guess I‘m doing a #DoubleChunksterChallenge? 😂 The Water Margin is 848 pages in print, so that one is in range, but the Kuan Yin book is 688. What‘s the minimum page count for chunksterism, do you think? 🤔 4y

Amiable @Sunraven Well, I‘ve set my own personal chunkster challenge every year for the past 7 years. I try to find a book that is close to 1,000 pages. The minimum page count was 900 pages. The most so far has been about 1,500, I think. But that‘s my definition of a chunkster. The goal of this challenge was to encourage others to tackle their own personal chunksters and cheer everyone on to their own finish. 🙂 4y

Scochrane26 @Amiable I‘m going to start my chunkster (An Echo in the Bone) this week. I realized today that since it‘s on my docs—friends sent it to me when I first got my kindle—it doesn‘t have page numbers, so I‘m going to try splitting it up by percent or chapters. 4y

Amiable @Scochrane26 When I log my page count into Goodreads it calculates it in percentage, too. That‘s a perfectly fine way to track progress. 👍🏼 4y

Amiable @ljuliel Thanks ... I feel a bit guilty, though, because this is a fairly lighter kind of historical fiction and @CarolynM is tackling a giant nonfiction work about the 1930s! I think reading nonfiction in large chunks like this is infinitely more difficult in terms of trying to stay focused and motivated. Last year I read “Truman“ and it took me every bit of three full months to get through those 1,100 pages. 4y

ljuliel Well, reading is reading. I wouldn‘t call Michener exactly a light read. His books are pretty challenging for the first hundred or so pages when you learn about the dirt , rocks, plants, trees, etc. It takes awhile to get to the good part of the story but it‘s worth it. I have Truman in audio and not sure when I‘ll screw up the nerve to listen to 54 hours. 😱. Keep up the good work. To me 1000 pages is a challenge , no matter what you read. 😊 4y

CarolynM Like @ljuliel says reading is reading. Also, it's something I'm genuinely interested in, so it's not that much of a chore🙂. I'm not going to do the full 100 pages, but look for suitable breaks around that mark. The first part was 82 pages. 4y

Remember, if you are enjoying your book and want to keep going, please don't think you have to stop at 100 pages for the week! The goal is to get momentum going to keep us chugging through books that appear mountainous. Aiming for 100 pages per week is just a short-term goal that enables us to get through any slogs and reach the end zone! GOOD LUCK!

Amiable @Yossarian That's close enough to count! One year I picked “Middlemarch“ even though it was “only“ 904 pages because I needed the official incentive to finally get through it. I rationalized the page count because it was a paperback with tiny print! 😃 4y

I've been doing this for 10 years now -- it's how I managed to get through “War and Peace“ and “Les Miserables,“ to name just a few chunksters! 😬 Pacing myself at 100 pages per week also helps me to get through giant nonfiction reads -- this year I FINALLY read “Truman“ by David McCullough. It had been sitting in my stacks for years! 4y

I have bad carpal tunnel syndrome and holding thick heavy books is very painful for me so thank the lord for audiobooks, it‘s my only way of doing chunksters! I‘m going to tackle Bleak House which I‘ve been promising myself I‘ll do ‘this year‘ for about five years! 4y

Amiable @CarolynM Ooh, excellent choice! That was almost my chunkster for 2019 but I went with “Truman” instead because I‘d had it on my shelves longer. I think “Grant” might be my pick for 2021 when I do nonfiction again. (edited) 4y

Amiable @Karkar It DOES help, doesn‘t it ? I mean, if I‘m really into it I‘ll keep going past the 100 pages. But if it‘s a bit of a slog or I‘m not totally into it, it‘s not hard to make myself hit 100 pages in a week. Slow and steady gets you there! And also? CarolynM I'm not in a hurry for Grant, I think it's the longest book on my TBR which is why it was the first one to come to mind. It would be great to have company with it so I'll put it off until next year and find something else for this🙂 4y

This is Oxford, Maryland. A sleepy, small town where Michener outlined his book Chesapeake. Quiet and relaxing, but not sure if it has the same atmosphere during foggy fall or cold winter. The only book store in town is open Saturday to Monday (closes at 2pm).

MaGoose @Amiable My mother and I usually visit the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Someday I'd like to visit central and western Maryland. Ends up my mom wants to go to Chincoteague, VA. So, we'll be cruising down the Eastern Shore, again... 5y

MaGoose @Amiable Thanks for the advice. I've been to Frederick once several years ago and want to go back, but my mom doesn't seem interested. I've always wanted to go to Annapolis. I've never given a thought about visiting B'more. I'll definitely think about it. 5y
