Chesapeake
Chesapeake | James A. Michener
In this classic novel, James A. Michener brings his grand epic tradition to bear on the four-hundred-year saga of Americas Eastern Shore, from its Native American roots to the modern age. In the early 1600s, young Edmund Steed is desperate to escape religious persecution in England. After joining Captain John Smith on a harrowing journey across the Atlantic, Steed makes a life for himself in the New World, establishing a remarkable dynasty that parallels the emergence of America. Through the extraordinary tale of one mans dream, Michener tells intertwining stories of family and national heritage, introducing us along the way to Quakers, pirates, planters, slaves, abolitionists, and notorious politicians, all making their way through American history in the common pursuit of freedom. Praise for Chesapeake Another of James Micheners great mines of narrative, character and lore. The Wall Street Journal [A] marvelous panorama of history seen in the lives of symbolic people of the ages . . . an emotionally and intellectually appealing book. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Micheners most ambitious work of fiction in theme and scope. The Philadelphia Inquirer Magnificently written . . . one of those rare novels that are enthusiastically passed from friend to friend.Associated Press From the Paperback edition.

This is Oxford, Maryland. A sleepy, small town where Michener outlined his book Chesapeake. Quiet and relaxing, but not sure if it has the same atmosphere during foggy fall or cold winter. The only book store in town is open Saturday to Monday (closes at 2pm).

19. Autumnal

Planning a couple-days trip to Maryland next week. Photos are from my trip at this time last year (although technically Delaware and Virginia, rather than Maryland).

Read tagged book eons ago.

Amiable My youngest son lives in Maryland now--graduated from UMD College Park in May! I love it there. 11mo
MaGoose @Amiable My mother and I usually visit the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Someday I'd like to visit central and western Maryland. Ends up my mom wants to go to Chincoteague, VA. So, we'll be cruising down the Eastern Shore, again... 11mo
Amiable @MaGoose Annapolis is gorgeous, although I have a special fondness for Baltimore. Something about the city speaks to me. 11mo
MaGoose @Amiable Thanks for the advice. I've been to Frederick once several years ago and want to go back, but my mom doesn't seem interested. I've always wanted to go to Annapolis. I've never given a thought about visiting B'more. I'll definitely think about it. 11mo

A little historical fiction to add to the thriller mix that I‘ve been reading tons of lately. Very detailed with tons of beautiful imagery, it‘s just what I‘m in the mood for tonight 😊🤓📚

#17: A beautiful narrative of the Maryland region and the history of our nation. Michener does it again with rich characters, imagery, and a compelling narrative! A must read for a fan of early American history! #17booksin2017

Joining in today has me combing my shelves, adding to my #summerreadinglist. Here's an obviously well-loved copy of a book my mother often recommended, but one I just never got around to. Maybe this summer it's finally time?

LauraBrook Welcome to Litsy!!! 💐 (edited) 2y

sara.the.librarian Great book! Proud to say I've lived my whole life in the 'Heart of the Chesapeake'. He writes extensively about my hometown, but only in such a way that you'd know it only if you were from here. 2y
Scurvygirl Welcome aboard! 2y
Lynnsoprano Welcome! It's been a long time since I read this, but it is my favorite Michener. Definitely worth the effort. 2y

Absolutely love swapping book recommendations with customers as they come through! This one she raved about. Anyone else read it?

BeckyD I have it somewhere. I loaned it to my dad, and he loved it. I still need to read it. I enjoyed Hawaii though. 3y

About this time the custom arose of referring to the Eastern Shore with capital letters, as if it were a special place; this tribute was never paid the western shore.
