The Good Immigrant
The Good Immigrant | Nikesh Shukla
Were told that we live in a multicultural melting pot that were post-racial. Yet, studies show that throughout the UK, people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups are much more likely to live in poverty than white British people (Institute of Race Relations). Its a hard time to be an immigrant, or the child of one, or even the grandchild of one. The Good Immigrant brings together twenty emerging British BAME writers, poets, journalists and artists to confront this issue. In these essays about race and immigration, they paint a picture of what it means to be other in a country that wants you, doesnt want you, doesnt accept you, needs you for its equality monitoring forms and would prefer you if you won a major reality show competition. Compiled by award-winning writer Nikesh Shukla who has long championed the issue of diversity in publishing and literary life in the UK this book will explore why immigrants come to the UK, why they stay, what it means for their identity if theyre mixed race, where their place is in the world if theyre unwelcome in the UK, and what effects this has on the education system. The essays are poignant, challenging, funny, sad, heartbreaking, polemic, angry, weary, and, most importantly, they give a platform to some of the most interesting BAME voices emerging in the UK today. Contributors to this extraordinary state of the nation collection will include: Musa Okwonga (poet/broadcaster) Chimene Suleyman (poet/columnist) Vinay Patel (playwright) Bim Adewumni (Buzzfeed) Salena Godden (poet/writer) Sabrina Mahfouz (playwright) Kieran Yates (journalist) Coco Khan (journalist) Sarah Sahim (journalist) Reni Eddo Lodge (journalist) Varaidzo (student) Darren Chetty (teacher) Himesh Patel (Tamwar from Eastenders) Nish Kumar (comedian) Miss L of Casting Call Woe (actor) Daniel York Loh (playwright and actor) Vera Chok (actor) Riz Ahmed (actor/rapper) Inua Ellams (poet/playwright) Wei Ming Kam (writer)

This is an outstanding and varied essay collection that explores many aspects of what it is like to be an immigrant or a minority in the UK.

There is something of value in each and every one of these essays. I had a couple of minor gripes while reading a couple of the earlier pieces, but as the collection went on, it went from strength to strength.

Essential reading. Packed full of diverse, important voices.

Read it.

"Being a model minority is code for being on perpetual probation," Wei Ming Kam.

"It's easy to cling to a position of privilege when it acts as protection from the ever-present danger of being seen as outsiders, but playing to the myth of the 'good immigrant' does not lead to real equality, or even acceptance. Breaking out of the 'model minority' box and looking beyond that status towards humanity and freedom is the long game."

A wonderful collection of essays/stories from 21 British persons (including some well known figures) about their own personal experiences on what it means to be BAME in Britain and beyond. Exploring travel, representation in the media, sexuality, education and fashion, every chapter offers an insightful look into the intersection of heritage and nationality and how far some people have to go in order to be truly accepting of others/anti-racist.

I know someone who this applies to perfectly!

Eye-opening, but at the same time unsurprising, as it‘s clear the UK has a plethora of issues with racism across all aspects of life. I enjoyed (no, wrong word, I mean I took a great deal from) a lot of the short stories in here. Made me think a great deal about the privilege I have as a white person. It‘s so unfair.

There are so many amazing books being written on social issues around the world and I'm glad that this book exists to highlight British BAME experiences. As a white British female, I've always thought that the UK didn't have a 'race problem' and compared with the atrocities that happen in some countries we don't, but I realised that just because it's "not that bad" doesn't mean it's all that good.

This collection of essays took me a while to digest b/c of how true, how relevant & articulate these essays were on topics of race/racism & what it means to be a POC in today‘s world. I drew many parallels from the essays in this collection, some of them were hopeful & funny & others brought home the universality of being the of “other”. I highly recommend this collection if you‘re to enlighten yourself about race & racism, especially in the UK.

'Books are my bag' is right. And this is an excellent book. I read The Good Immigrant in a single sitting. It's an interesting collection of writing from a wide range of people on what it means to be an immigrant in modern day Britain. At times moving, and others mildly humorous, this book shows there really is no such thing as a typical immigrant.

I love an essay collection with a lot of different voices that I don't often get to hear. After reading The Good Immigrant, I wanted MORE in the same vein. It was published by Unbound, a crowdsourcing platform for new books. @bookriot called my attention to a new offering by #unbound Cut From the Same Cloth, and I couldn't wait to jump on board. Now I just have to survive the wait until it's out!

Saw Dunkirk (so good!) and now I'm reading this fabulous book.

Update: an important collection of essays by a variety of British authors. Honest and engaging on contemporary issues of race, voice, identity and more. Not a book to be rushed through — it's better to find room to contemplate each author's words and experiences before moving on to the next essay.

In equal parts this book was and was not written for my consumption.

A brilliant and human collection of the migrant experience that reminds me of my position of privilege as a white woman but that also reminds me of the diaspora between countries that say 'diverse' and are 'diverse'.

This is a book about experiences I can only read about, but that I (and our generation) must try to understand.

"White people debate it [diversity]. We live it."

I usually dislike book reviews that talk about how "important" the book is but for this I'll make an exception. A really great collection of essays - each on its own strong but together something more again.a book to make you listen - then think. Really powerful. One to return to.

An excellent collection of essays - fresh writing, highly readable. An important book if for no other reason than to open people's minds, remind us what a diverse world we live in but bring home that things like humour, wanting to connect, & the magic of a good haircut, are universal. But mostly just a great read! Varaidzo, miss L, Darren Chetty & Salena Godden were highlights. 👏🏼 #DiverseAThon

This book really packs a punch and would definitely recommend it. I found the essays that were written in a more conversational style to be the most powerful. Others felt a little dry and rather like reading an academic paper. Definitely an important read although I would have liked to read some povs from people who weren't journalists/in the media. A 4⭐ read from me. Maybe we should buy and send in bulk to certain politicians!

This book was amazing. Such an important read given the times we are living in. I try to read a diverse selection of books but I don't often read works by BAME writers from the UK, so often the context is American. It was a hard read in parts, it caused me to examine my privileges more than ever and revealed truths that I had previously been ignorant of. I would recommend this book to anyone. The essay style is a favourite of mine. A winner 🤗👌👌
