Leonard Cohen: Poems and Songs
Leonard Cohen: Poems and Songs | Leonard Cohen
35 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 15 to read
A magnificent selection of song lyrics and poems from across the storied career of one of the most daring and affecting poet-songwriters in the world. In the more than half century since his first book of poems was published, Leonard Cohen has evolved into an international cult figure who transcends genres and generations. This anthology contains a cross section of his five decades of influential work, including such legendary songs as Suzanne, Sisters of Mercy, Bird on the Wire, Famous Blue Raincoat, and I m Your Man and searingly memorable poems from his many acclaimed poetry collections, including "Flowers for Hitler, Beautiful Losers, "and "Death of a Lady s Man." Encompassing the erotic and the melancholy, the mystical and the sardonic, this volume showcases a writer of dazzling intelligence and live-wire emotional immediacy."

#tower #poetrymatters @TheSpineView

Well, my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day in the Tower of Song

I said to Hank Williams, how lonely does it get?
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
Oh, a hundred floors above me in the Tower of Song

I was born like this, I had no choice

IndoorDame I was born with the gift of a golden voice And twenty-seven angels from the Great Beyond
They tied me to this table right here in the Tower of Song

So you can stick your little pins in that voodoo doll
I'm very sorry, baby, doesn't look like me at all
I'm standing by the window where the light is strong
Ah, they don't let a woman kill you, not in the Tower of Song
3mo
IndoorDame Now, you can say that l've grown bitter but of this you may be sure
The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor
And there's a mighty judgment coming, but I may be wrong
You see, you hear these funny voices in the Tower of Song

I see you standing on the other side
I don't know how the river got so wide
I loved you baby, way back when
And all the bridges are burning that we might have crossed
3mo
IndoorDame But I feel so close to everything that we lost We'll never, we'll never have to lose it again

Now I bid you farewell, I don't know when I'll be back They're moving us tomorrow to that tower down the track
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly from a window in the Tower of Song
3mo

“I greet you from the other side of sorrow and despair, with a love so vast and shattered it will reach you everywhere.”

@GingerAntics this is what the ones who chose to not feel miss. This came up in an email today regarding love from Maria Shriver it reminded me of our discussion.

GingerAntics Oh wow, that is short but powerful. I like that. Missing out on that is like missing out on being human or humanity. 2y

#PoetryMatters - Dance:
Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Nute @Crazeedi @Tera66 There was an immediate attraction to the photo. It is beautiful! 3y
Nute @Soubhiville Leonard Cohen is more like songwriter-poet to me. When I read his poetry books as a collection of poems, I didn‘t connect to most of them, but all of his poems that also serve as song lyrics I really like. Maybe it‘s because I am already familiar with them as songs and the connection is there...idk. This poem...this song...I‘m on the same page as you...I love it! Especially sung by ✨Madeleine Peyroux✨ https://youtu.be/cRLrwLibDUo 3y
Nute @TrishB Agree!💕 3y
Nute @Hazel2019 @Cathythoughts @Come-read-with-me Yes!💕 3y
Nute @TheSpineView Your words are perfect, Ms. Lisa! Dancers are artist and athletes rolled up into one. They are a visual expression of both beauty and strength. And the talent of this photographer captured the whole definition on film!💕 3y
Soubhiville @Nute that‘s my favorite version too. ❤️ 3y

I'm sorry, did someone mention Leonard Cohen? 😍 I paid a lot to go see him in concert in 2010. I expected to cry. Instead I was enthralled. Even in his 70s, his sex appeal was palpable. Such a gorgeous, brilliant man, inside and out!

Cathythoughts I agree ♥️. I saw him in Dublin , he must have been hitting 80 ( maybe he was 80 ? ) He was kneeling down on the stage in the reverie of his singing .... I‘ll never forget it. A precious memory. ♥️ 5y

1. Lots & lots. Favorites change often. Longtime favorites like Cohen and Portishead. Sometimes newer music creeps in like Banks😆.

2. Nope.

3. An hour around lunch time and a couple hours in the evening.

4. Not much.

5. I cry easily😢.

#quotsymarch18 #sudden This song is taken from a Greek poem , the lyrics & melody ❤️

Suddenly the night has grown colder
The god of love preparing to depart
Alexandra hoisted on his shoulders
They slip between the sentries of the heart

Upheld by the simplicities of pleasure
They gain the light , they formlessly entwine
And radiant beyond your wildest measure
They fall among the voices & the wine ...

Sung by Sharon Robinson, my fave Song ❤️

From Leonard Cohens Suzanne :

There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror ....

Cathythoughts That's one of my fave Leonard Cohen lines. A wise man & so unassuming. So humble. He spoke too when he was dying & instead of the hard inner voice, he said he felt a huge compassion for himself & his life. I'd say his time in the monasteries stood to him ❤️❤️❤️ (edited) 7y

Yesterday was filled with saddening news. The violence to which humanity constantly stoops is baffling. The only antidote is beauty and love. We are so much more than our destructive sides. Lest we forget in times of turmoil.

A poem by that sexy beast, gravel-voiced troubadour, Buddhist monk, Renaissance man Leonard Cohen.
