Rest Is Resistance
Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto | Tricia Hersey
13 posts | 13 read | 18 to read
Disrupt and push back against capitalism and white supremacy. In this book, Tricia Hersey, aka The Nap Bishop, encourages us to connect to the liberating power of rest, daydreaming, and naps as a foundation for healing and justice. What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine?level pace feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted. Our worth does not reside in how much we produce, especially not for a system that exploits and dehumanizes us. Rest, in its simplest form, becomes an act of resistance and a reclaiming of power because it asserts our most basic humanity. We are enough. The systems cannot have us. Rest Is Resistance is rooted in spiritual energy and centered in Black liberation, womanism, somatics, and Afrofuturism. With captivating storytelling and practical advice, all delivered in Herseys lyrical voice and informed by her deep experience in theology, activism, and performance art, Rest Is Resistance is a call to action, a battle cry, a field guide, and a manifesto for all of us who are sleep deprived, searching for justice, and longing to be liberated from the oppressive grip of Grind Culture.

A good spot on the porch with a pot of tea, a blanket & Tricia Hersey here to whisper-shout: “Your body is a site of liberation./It doesn‘t belong to capitalism.”

My spouse asked me to read this since he is too, and I couldn‘t say no to that (and pass up the opportunity to acquire a new book). I love how it starts (and think it‘s cool how the title is ghosting through the page).

DieAReader @Andrew65 Amen🙏🏻 to that my friend. Ty❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥Been doing my best & trying to listen to my body😖😞😭, hence all the audiobooks. I can‘t lay & read comfortably for long so, audiobooks allow me to lay in a moderately pain free or eased pain state for longer. It‘s helpful. 6mo

5/5 ⭐ An important read.

I'm bothered by the low rating on Litsy for this book. If you're upset by the author's call to end white supremacy, end capitalism, and end patriarchy, what are you even doing here?

Merriam-Webster's definition of white supremacy: the belief that the white race is inherently superior to other races and that white people should have control over people of other races.

This ideology must end.

“I want us to understand that nuance is freeing and freedom. There is no such thing as cookie-cutter healing. Everyone brings them an origin story, a history, and identities that are interconnected. There is room to rest in the freedom of managing your own deprogramming journey.. you don‘t have to grind, hustle, accept burnout as normal, and be in a constant state of exhaustion and sleep deprivation”
READ THIS 😍

This book was profound in it's message of rest and relaxation and how this simple act of closing our eyes, or day dreaming can be acts of resistance against a white supremacist system that expects us to grind for capitalism. Excellent narration. I'll have to reread this book on a regular basis once a year so I can really comprehend the messages within this book.

BookBosomed1 I received this book as a Christmas gift. I'll need to move it up on the TBR priority list.

One of my best reads of the year in the very last days of it! This book is exceptionally good. Will be using with my sociology students for sure (relevant to so many topics - rest, yes, but also socialization, capitalism, systemic injustice, white supremacy, social movements…the list goes on). My only regret is that I listened to this without having my own copy to highlight - should‘ve known better! Endless perfectly-stated and profound passages.

Suet624 I'll have to find this. I nap every day - sometimes even stopping on my drive home to nap for 10-20 minutes. I tried to set up a nap room at a prior job - the powers that be weren't into the idea. 1y
JamieArc This sounds like the better read than the tagged book. Ironically for a book about doing nothing, I had to work way too hard to stick with it. I‘ll look forward to your tagged option! 1y
Christine @Suet624 Wow, you‘re my nap hero! I‘ve never been a successful napper but am now inspired to try. (And booo to your prior job powers - someone should anonymously mail them a copy of this… 😉) 1y
Christine @JamieArc LOL! I‘ve been meaning to check out your tagged one, too. I guess I‘d say this one is heavier on the “why” of napping than the “how” - but I do buy that in order to make space for more rest in our lives, we have to some extent defy the status quo of “grind culture,” productivity as a measure of worth, capitalism, individualism, etc. 1y

Halfway through reading this it occurred to me to check if the audio was read by the author, and so I went and got the audio, so I could listen with my eyes closed. It's a wonderful look at the ways that white supremacy and capitalism combine and create a culture that makes us thing resting is a reward, instead of a necessary part of living.
