Winter Garden Mystery: A Daisy Dalrymple Mystery
Winter Garden Mystery: A Daisy Dalrymple Mystery | Carola Dunn
22 posts | 27 read | 22 to read
In England, 1923, The Honorable Daisy Dalrymple has made a decision that, while shocking to her class, is in perfect keeping with the spirit of the times. Rather than live with relatives until she marries, she has decided to make her own living with her writing. Her series of articles on country manor homes has proven to be a success, and she travels to Occles Hall to research her latest piece. What she finds is a household under the thumb of the ill-tempered and demanding Lady Valeria. And the discovery of the body of a pregnant maid buried in the winter garden does nothing to improve Lady Valeria's mood. A young Welsh under-gardener is arrested for the crime but Daisy is sure of his innocence. Wary of the air of secrecy that permeates Occles Hall, Daisy convinces Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard to investigate further - a murder that is more complex and horrifying than either could have imagined.

It's dreary and gray here, so a good day to curl up with a cat and a wintry mystery 😺

A cute cozy mystery. I enjoyed it on audio, it was a good narrator which helped to keep track of all the characters.

I love how Alec acts all put-upon by everyone's faith in Daisy's judgement, and then has exactly the same faith in her. 😂

I couldn't remember much about this at first and now it's all coming back to me... It feels surprising how far I am into the book without Alec having shown up yet!

A pleasant cozy mystery set in the early part of the 20th century. A read that I enjoyed and some good plotting.

My first finish for #24b4Monday. This is the second Daisy Dalrymple mysteries. They are light, cozy reads. Not a lot of heft to them, but fun little reads. In this one Daisy heads to Occles Hall where the Lady of the house is tyrant over the entire village, except the smithy. The smithy‘s daughter‘s body is found in the Winter Garden. Thus begins the tale...

I enjoyed this story and look forward to spending more time with Daisy (and her Alec).

Andrew65 This is next up for me in this series. 4y

I enjoyed the second installment in this cozy series. Daisy just can‘t help solving a crime when it appears in front of her.

Since I'm out of Phryne Fisher books to read (😭), I needed a 1920's mystery fix. I enjoyed the first book in the Daisy Dalrymple series, so I decided to give book two a whirl. It starts out slow and it took me awhile to get into it, but overall it was an enjoyable experience. Still not my favorite but I'll definitely be reading more in the series. 3.5⭐️#mystery #1920s.

I got into audiobooks through podcasts, slowly building up the stamina to listen to a whole book. Because of that, I started with nonfiction and slowly worked my way to fiction. Now I'm really in mysteries-- mostly anything with an excuse for a British or otherwise non-American accent! #awesomeaudiobooks #marchintoreading

Lmstraubie I love when the narrator has a non-American accent also.☺ 7y
Gulfsidemusing I've had this author recommended to me...glad to know it's a good audio, too! 7y
DogMomIrene I had a similar podcast to audiobook journey. I love fiction audiobooks, but I can only concentrate on them if I'm walking or exercising. 7y

I'm loving all these new "cozy crime" series that people have recommended! Daisy Dalrymple is like an English Phryne Fisher, without the bankroll. Her exploits and chutzpah are fantastic, especially her interplay with Detective Inspector Fletcher & poor Phillip Petrie who keeps offering to marry her to save her from work! Brilliant series, thanks again to @LeeRHarry for introducing me to her. #daisysdarlings

LeeRHarry Yay!! 😆 7y
Jess_Read_This Love the cover!! I haven't heard of this series. From the sounds of it, it might become a new favorite! 7y

3.30am,can't sleep so I'm trying a cozy English mystery before I try some more shuteye. These books are so cute, they definitely remind me of the Phryne Fisher novels, but these are set in the upper classes of English society instead of Melbourne.Same Art Deco/ bright young thing feel to them, same language & slang like mater, toodle pip & old thing. I really really want Kerry Greenwood to write more Phryne, but Daisy will do for now. #daisysdarlings

BibliophileMomma What's the first book in this series? 7y
Lizpixie @Tiffness83 it's called Death at Wentwater Court. I reviewed it about a month ago, I believe. 7y

Mehso-so

A pleasant diversion and a quick read, this book did keep me away from my Sunday chores. Daisy is an amateur sleuth and modern girl for the 1920's. She reminds me of the young Tuppence, In Agatha Christie's books. There's the fun slang , think Jeeves and Wooster and A Scotland Yard detective think Ngaio Marsh . I'll probably read another if I run across Daisy at a booksale, but a bit of a disappointment.

jessdean Good to know👍🏽😃 7y
