The Time Machine is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, published in 1895. Wells is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term "time machine", coined by Wells, is now almost universally used to refer to such a vehicle. The Time Machine has since been adapted into two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It has also indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in many media (font Wikipedia)

Book #40: Similar to Frankenstein and Dracula, The Time Machine represents one of the world's earliest cases of science-fiction. Starting in a time when Jules Verne and other H.G. Wells classics were pushing the bounds of conventional fiction, The Time Machine shows us what Wells' view of the future might look like as his time traveler takes a...

This is a great fantastic novella, exciting and with its special atmosphere! #TheTimeMachine doesn't have a single superfluous word, it is small in volume, but the content in it would be enough for numerous volumes with sequels!

This was a weird book for me. While I respect what this book did for the genre, I couldn't get passed that the main character kept saying how innocent and childlike the girl from the future was that he was sleeping with.

The characters that are in the book are those that you've always heard.
Morlocks... Heard it? Yup, this is the book.
I read it because it was a "classic" I'd never read. If you go in with that mindset, you'll be nicely surprised that there is a pretty good story involved.

sixgun @ReclusiveHermit I would never have finished it without serial reader. That app is helping me get through all the books that I find mind numbing, but are classics. Turns out in small chunks they're actually pretty nice. 4mo

I can see why this is a classic. So many ideas have sprung from this story and the term ‘time machine‘ was coined from it. However, it just wasn‘t my cup of tea. Maybe it was just too bad to follow in and audiobook setting. At least I can cross it off my 100 books poster!

Melissa_J I wasn‘t a fan of this one either 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo

I should be impressed, this being a classic and all, but my take away is less then I‘d hoped for. I was going to select the bail button several times, but persevered right to the sanctimonious end. Don‘t get me wrong, there are great bits, but this story may need its own Time Machine to keep it relevant.

Really weird little book. I vaguely remember parts of the 2002 movie (I was 7ish then?) and thought it was going to be closer to that. An interesting piece of speculative fiction, and particularly interesting for the reflections of the Time Traveller on his changing assumptions about futuristic humanity.

When Herbert George Wells was 8 years old, an accident left him bedridden with a broken leg. Thanks to his dad bringing him stacks of library books to pass the time, H.G. developed a deep love of reading, which eventually led to his interest in writing. Before he turned 30, H.G. was cranking out a list of beloved novels like this one. 🙌🏻I'm betting his dad added a few sci-fi books to that library pile. 😁🖖🏻

I liked this book soooooo much more than War of the Worlds, which I found immensely boring. I really enjoyed the Time Traveler‘s character; I thought he was pretty great. I wish a little more time had been spent on Weena, but there was still a good amount of emotion evoked from this one. Loved the ambiguous ending, too, even though they usually drive me crazy. Wonderful quick read!

I‘m reasonably sure I read this as a kid, but I read it again anyway. Short SF classic that mostly deserves its praise. Reading something so clearly written long ago that is mostly set so far in the future makes it that much more alien. I enjoyed it, but didn‘t love it.

While Darwin wrote about the survival of the fittest, Wells wrote this story about a scientist traveling into the future to discover that things don't always get better as time goes on. In the future, the narrator notices that people were smart enough to make the world a more comfortable place – but as the world got more comfortable, people became less smart. Quite a prophetic view... 👇👇👇

BarbaraBB All in all this is a very interesting read with lots of interesting theories and insights. However I read it as an audiobook and had trouble staying concentrated. Because it is a bit boring as well. #1001books #pop18 1y

Reading books in English is easy for me, but listening to it is something different. I‘d like to give it a try though (spending lots of hours in my car, being annoyed by stupid radio dj‘s 😬).
So I started with this short read. Four chapters in and I do understand it. The narrator though is horrible. But I guess it is take it or leave in when you want the audiobook for free (Libravox). To be continued 😉!

Kalalalatja Audio narrators are so important for the experience! 1y

Finishing the year with the old and very beat up copy of the time machine. I was complaining to my father in law that I didn‘t have a book small enough that I could finish before 2017 was over. He asked why I can‘t just start a book in 2017 and keep reading the same book through to 2018. I looked at him like this 😳. So he handed me this book, and looked at me like this 🙄 and shook his head because he thinks I‘m crazy but loves me anyway 🤗 haha

Reading for the #HRPGBingo The Gauntlet slot, read a book with time travel. As recommended by a fellow litten, so thanks!

LectricSheep I loved the Time Machine when I was a kid! I went back and reread it with one of my middle school students this year and was like “oh, hmm, the Weena relationship is...problematic.” 😂 2y
EllanaRose @LectricSheep - I can imagine loving it before you realise the issues it has. It is massively problematic - white guy goes to a new place, kills its natives - but what a fascinating plot twist in the epilogue 2y
LectricSheep I know!!! I still have such fondness for the actual “time machine” elements. 2y
EllanaRose @LectricSheep - I wonder, if it had been written in a less discriminatory time, what would have changed... But oooooh that ending! I got chills at that twist! 2y

Since this was so formally written (and therefore in my humble opinion, kind of dry) I'm very glad that I decided to listen to this on Audible. I actually found it interesting to see what someone from our past would imagine our still distant future to be like. I'm happy that I finally read this.

GypsyKat @ForeverNerdy Well so far I'm glad I'm listening to it, because it's easier for me to listen to dry books than read them. I don't dislike it so far, it's just dry. But it's a short listen, less than five hours. 2y
