Difficult Women
Difficult Women | Roxane Gay
Award-winning author and powerhouse talent Roxane Gay burst onto the scene with "An Untamed State" and the "New York Times" bestselling essay collection "Bad Feminist" (Harper Perennial). Gay returns with "Difficult Women," a collection of stories of rare force and beauty, of hardscrabble lives, passionate loves, and quirky and vexed human connection. The women in these stories live lives of privilege and of poverty, are in marriages both loving and haunted by past crimes or emotional blackmail. A pair of sisters, grown now, have been inseparable ever since they were abducted together as children, and must negotiate the elder sister's marriage. A woman married to a twin pretends not to realize when her husband and his brother impersonate each other. A stripper putting herself through college fends off the advances of an overzealous customer. A black engineer moves to Upper Michigan for a job and faces the malign curiosity of her colleagues and the difficulty of leaving her past behind. From a girls fight club to a wealthy subdivision in Florida where neighbors conform, compete, and spy on each other, Gay delivers a wry, beautiful, haunting vision of modern America reminiscent of Merritt Tierce, Jamie Quatro, and Miranda July."

Snow has been falling for several hours and the absence of sound as fresh flakes fall to the ground is seductive (from Bone Density)

On this super hot, muggy day, Roxane Gay made me miss the snow. I know that sound-or lack of-like the back of my hand. Mmmm winter ❤️

This is a powerful collection of stories/portraits of women. They are raw and candid and Roxane Gay doesn‘t mince words or avert her eyes. Women shouldn‘t have to hide the things that happen to them, and I feel like this collection helps bring them into the light. #LitsyAtoZ

Difficult woman by Roxane Gay.
I'll admit I hated that book!

The subjects were far too close to home and I didn't want to relive all that again.
This book is a did not finish for me.

Quite disappointing. I loved her novel & recent memoir. But this collection fell really flat. I‘ve always hated when a 2-3 page piece is called a ‘short story‘ — no, that‘s an anecdote, a scene. Not a story. Way too many super short pieces that said nothing. Some cliched characters, few that were unique. Also TOO MUCH SEX I know it‘s different for me being ace, but still, good lord. A few stories were strong but mostly this was a big miss. 2/5 ⭐️

I really liked this #newyearwhodis pick. Gay can make worlds and characters feel real in only a few pages, and some of her imagery is incredibly striking. A lot of the themes and language got repetitive though and I ended up not loving it as much as I thought I was going to. I also don't know if I'll be in a rush to read her other fiction, I'm not sure I could stomach the violence in long form.

@monalyisha

monalyisha I can understand your hesitancy! Its rough...but I loved so many of the stories. Maybe knowing about her life (via “Bad Feminist” & “Hunger”) helped me to accept & understand the thematic repetition. 7mo
ladyneverwhere @monalyisha that makes so much sense, I wish I had read her nonfiction first. 7mo

This book. I've never read any of Roxanne Gay's books before ( I know, I know #badfeminist). But I've always loved her articles and listening to her give interviews. So far this book is only deepening my appreciation for her. @monalyisha was right in warning me what a tough read it is, but so far it's my favorite thing I've read this year.

This one took me a while to get through just because the subject matter is difficult and there are many essays rather than characters you can connect to and travel with. All of the women in these essays have their stories to tell, however, and they are often sad or disturbing ones. I wish there was something between “pick” and “so-so” because the writing is beautiful and it‘s an important work, but not easy to read, Which is ok. Life isn‘t easy.

I finally finished this beast of a book. I don‘t call it a “beast” because it‘s large or hulking, but because it‘s HAIRY. Risky. Dangerous. Perilous. Most of the stories are painful - about abuse, violent rape, child death. But they‘re also about survival, strength, conscious & intentional vulnerability, VOICE, &, therefore, resistance.

Favorite stories: “North Country”, “How”, & “The Sacrifice of Darkness.” I almost wish the last were a novel.
