Megan Rapinoe, Olympic gold medalist and two-time Women's World Cup champion, has become a galvanizing force for social change; here, she urges all of us to take up the mantle, with both big actions and small, to continue the fight for justice and equality Megan Rapinoe is one of the world's most talented athletes. But beyond her massive professional success on the soccer field, Rapinoe has become an icon and ally to millions, boldly speaking out on the issues that matter most. In recent years, she's become one of the faces of the equal pay movement and her tireless activism for LGBTQ rights has earned her global support. In her first book, Rapinoe embarks on a thoughtful and unapologetic discussion of social justice and politics. Raised in a conservative small town in northern California, the youngest of six, Rapinoe was four years old when she kicked her first soccer ball. Her parents encouraged her love for the game, but also urged her to volunteer at homeless shelters and food banks. Her passion for community engagement never wavered through high school or college, all the way up to 2016, when she took a knee during the national anthem in solidarity with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, to protest racial injustice and police brutality - the first high-profile white athlete to do so. The backlash was immediate, but it couldn't compare to the overwhelming support. Rapinoe became a force of social change, both on and off the field. Using anecdotes from her own life and career, from suing the United States Soccer Federation alongside her teammates over gender discrimination to her widely publicized refusal to visit the White House, Rapinoe discusses the obligation we all have to speak up, and reveals the impact each of us can have on our communities. As she declared during the soccer team's victory parade in New York in 2019, "[T]his is everybody's responsibility, every single person here, every single person who is not here, every single person who doesn't want to be here, every single person who agrees and doesn't agree.... It takes everybody. This is my charge to everybody. Do what you can. Do what you have to do. Step outside yourself. Be more. Be better. Be bigger than you've ever been before."

My heroine!
Wore my red “equal pay” shirts during A US Women‘s soccer Friendly played near me. Spearheaded by Rapinoe, the women‘s team was suing the US Soccer Federation over gender discrimination and equal pay. Eventually They won the suit.⚽️💪🎉🎉

Wasn‘t sure what to expect. About 2/3 through and really like it. Soccer games and behind the scenes, politics, family, activism, dating… are all threaded together. She has long been one of my favorite players. I have no idea how I missed when this came out! Audiobook so I could hear her words in her voice. 👍

This like other sports/athlete written books is not the best. But as a soccer (and sports) fan I do like to follow some athletes, which includes reading their books... some interesting parts, but overall nothing new in this books like isn‘t already known if you follow women‘s soccer at all. Wasn‘t expecting much with this one, but defiantly not too impressed.

Solid memoir, I enjoyed hearing about her family, career and activism and how they are all woven together. Enjoyed reliving some iconic soccer matches through her memory. Some parts felt a little self serving but it kept me listening and walking so that is a win! #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

@Eggs thanks for the tag! I‘m a day late! I‘ve spent my whole life believing “sports aren‘t for me” both playing and watching. Now I have a son in soccer and one of my most favorite things to do is watch him play! It‘s crazy! I should also say that soccer isn‘t big in our area. Now we watch soccer on tv, I read soccer books (tagged), and my favorite series is Ted Lasso. Who am I?? Kids really do change everything! Drop any soccer recs here ⚽️⬇️

Oryx Ted Lasso ♥️ the only thing about football that I like 3y

Book #40: 🎧 Audiobook. As a lifelong soccer player and USWNT fan, this felt like essential reading. Rapinoe has certainly cemented herself as one of the USWNT greats and a vocal activist for human rights. I‘m impressed with the way that she has used her platform to speak about LGBTQ rights and BLM. She is also one half of my favorite women‘s sports power couple. Thanks to YouTube I was able to relive some of the epic game highlights mentioned.

Very interesting autobiography of this soccer star. Not only is she a world-class athlete, but she‘s an activist for social justice. She‘ll be on the Olympic team again at age 36!

My son is into soccer (he‘s only 6) so I feel like I should know a little more about the game. This is the closest thing I came up with: a memoir from Megan Rapinoe, a player on the Women‘s National US Soccer Team. Loved this book which covers Megan‘s early life, a bit on her family and love life, her love of soccer, and her activism for LGBTQIA+ and Black Lives Matter movements. Listened while painting my porch swing yellow 💛⚽️

I picked this audiobook because my daughter is really getting into soccer and I wanted to understand it better. I still don‘t understand what offsides is, but I liked Megan.

Lauram I remember learning what it meant from Bend It Like Beckham. 3y
Bookwormjillk @Lauram ohhhh I loved that movie. Maybe I should re-watch because clearly it didn‘t sink in. 3y

The content, with mix of trainings games gender equality and racial equality, is good (wish it were longer). But I‘m giving it a higher rating, coz I love football (yes, futbal, not soccer) and USWNT / Megan Rapinoe are badass! ⚽️ ⚽️

“To win, you have to believe it will happen. After that, it‘s just the question being bolder, braver, more inclined to speak up, and in any way you can, better.”

1. The most recent one I've read. But there are a lot of great memoirs and biographies out there.
2. I love Sci-Fi and of course there are a lot of masters: Lem, Dmitry Glukhovsky, the Strugazkis, Asimov, Bradbury, Frank Herbert... just to name a few 😅
3. That one's hard. Volker Reinhardt is a nonfiction writer I've read several books of. And Guy Browning!

Tag - you are!

Thank you, @Buechersuechtling for the tag! 💙

I was fascinated by Megan Rapinoe from the first moment I saw her playing. Of course I had to read her book as well! From childhood up until recent times, Rapinoe talks about her life, family, soccer and of course her fight for justice. One can really her her voice in the text, to me it was like she was right next to me. Now I support her even more ♥️

I didn‘t really think I was going to devour the book as quickly as I did. It was a great read. It takes you through her personal life, the sports industry, and racial inequality/injustice.

I‘m a huge US Women‘s soccer fan and have long admired Rapinoe. Her memoir details her life as a soccer player but also as an activist. Recommend for sports fans and non-sports fans alike.

Great audiobook! Rapinoe tells her story. She tells about her family, the town she grew up in, her soccer career and the role as an activist for equal treatment whether it be BLM, equal pay for women or gay rights. She‘s pretty badass!
