The Turner House
The Turner House | Angela Flournoy
A powerful, timelydebut,The Turner Housemarks a major new contribution to the story of the American family. The Turners have lived on Yarrow Street for over fifty years. Their house has seen thirteen children grown and gone--and some returned; it has seen the arrival of grandchildren, the fall of Detroit's East Side, and the loss of a father. The house still stands despite abandoned lots, an embattled city, and the inevitable shift outward to the suburbs. But now, as ailing matriarch Viola finds herself forced to leave her home and move in with her eldest son, the family discovers that the house is worth just a tenth of its mortgage. The Turner children are called home to decide its fate and to reckon with how each of their pasts haunts--and shapes--their family's future. Praised by Ayana Mathis as "utterly moving" and "un-putdownable," The Turner House brings us a colorful, complicated brood full of love and pride, sacrifice and unlikely inheritances. It's a striking examination of the price we pay for our dreams and futures, and the ways in which our families bring us home.

The Turner Family live on Yarrow Street in Detroit for over 50 years. The father has died, and the mother has moved in with her eldest, Cha Cha. The haint, that he had first seen as a child, has returned, and he is tormented. There are 13 siblings, and the time has come to decide on the fate of the family Home. A story of love, growing up and figuring out what is real. As a member of a large family, I related to the siblings interaction.

mdhughes72 I‘ve been using this in my Families and Society course the past couple years. My students have been enjoying it and they help me see things I wouldn‘t have noticed on my own. 7mo

Drives to office: carpet cleaners are there

Jumping back and forth between present day and the Turners initial move to Detroit, Flournoy gives us perspectives from several of the Turners on their personal issues, as well as as their family home on Yarrow Street and their memories and connection to it. Cleverly woven in is a commentary on poverty, race, and class as pertaining to Detroit's history, landscape, and housing crises. A well-crafted, well-paced, multigenerational story.

I didn‘t fall in love with the characters like I thought I would. I loved the fact that they took care of their mother and the saying we all grew up in the same house but have different opinions about how we grew up rang true for this family.

This was a really well written book that centers around what it means to be a family, to struggle with addiction, to contemplate ghosts and to move toward the present. It was an easy to read novel that felt true. It takes place and Detroit and many issues discussing race and poverty were discussed. All in all I really enjoyed it.

And just like that I only have 4 more books to read off this list!!!! Yeah!

While it showed promise, this wasn't a great novel. There were some well drawn, colorful Turners, who I cared about. The family was so large that half of them barely made an appearance, and the family was not together enough— the few scenes of large family gatherings were my favorites. The novel seemed hung up on bizarre episodes, such as accidental intergenerational urination. I also didn't love the writing itself. Unsatisfying.

courtney I agree--the scenes with them all together were great! Too many of them without their own moment though made it hard to care about a lot of them though. Also, when the ending came I was like ".....?" 2y

3.75 ⭐️ I wanted to like this more than I ultimately did. I could see a lot of what the author was trying to do, and there was a lot of potential for rich family histories, but with 13 children to account for, some characters fell flat and others weren't fleshed out enough. A lot of details were given too easily. The last third of the book was so strong, especially because we finally get to see the fam come together, but a resolution was missing.

Notafraidofwords I have bailed on this book 3 times. I've never made it thru. 2y
courtney @Notafraidofwords there are some really beautiful passages and high moments but sometimes it was hard to connect and feel anything for the characters. I can see how it would be hard to get through for some! 2y
shawnmooney I'm on the homestretch with this book, and unlike you, I'm enjoying it less as it gets closer to the end. I'm tempted to bail – as is my wont – but I will finish it. 2y
courtney @shawnmooney I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. I love a good family drama type book so seeing the siblings forced to communicate and come together was good for me. Otherwise, I didn't know if the characters were strong enough to stand on their own. 2y
shawnmooney I just posted my review, if you're interested… :-) 2y
