On the last day of summer, some years ago, a young college graduate moves to Chicago and rents a small apartment on the north side of the city, by the vast and muscular lake. This is the story of the five seasons he lives there, during which he meets gangsters, gamblers, policemen, a brave and garrulous bus driver, a cricket player, a librettist, his first girlfriend, a shy apartment manager, and many other riveting souls, not to mention a wise and personable dog of indeterminate breed.A love letter to Chicago, the Great American City, and a wry account of a young man's coming-of-age during the one summer in White Sox history when they had the best outfield in baseball, Brian Doyle's "Chicago "is a novel that will plunge you into a city you will never forget, and may well wish to visit for the rest of your days.

I stopped by a different Dollar Tree today and found these. I think I might have a copy of The Mothers but I‘m not sure, this copy is signed though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Chrissyreadit I‘ve been surprised to find some great books at The Dollar Tree. 3y

This book was an ode to Chicago. I think my love for the setting made me enjoy this more than I would've had it been set somewhere else. It was a slow burn kind of read and that is usually not my thing. If you are interested in a quick read, then I recommend it.

Reading this makes me miss the city. I haven't lived there in 3 years but it feels like I was just there yesterday....

Pickpick

Imagine yourself having coffee with an old friend who has just moved back home & that friend is telling you about everything that happened, everything they saw, loved/hated while they were away. That conversation is this book, a meandering tale that weaves through the streets, the neighborhoods, the friendships, the dangers & more of Chicago. Populated with eccentric, fabulous characters this a slow but nonetheless enjoyable read.

Ok, having now worked my way through my most recent stack of library previews, it‘s time to return to my TBR stack(s). Looks like I‘m going to spend some time back home in Chicago with my next book.

I spent all day yesterday in downtown Chicago and had a wonderful time. Managed to get in quite a few steps along the way. Part of this step count was my visit to the American Writer‘s Museum. I highly recommend this literary museum to all fellow bookworms. #stepcount #Chicago

Didn't get a lot of reading in today due to a bunch of errands I needed to run, but the view of Lake Michigan from my reading nook sure was beckoning!

Litsy help needed! Me and two friends are headed to Chicago this weekend. I always visit at least one indie when in a new city...but it seems like Chicago has many good bookstores! I've never been to the city! For those Midwestern Littens or other travelers, what is your favorite indie bookshop there?

Lola There are so many great indies here! Where will you be staying area-wise, and how do you plan to get around? 7y
Alicia @Lola so we are staying literally right downtown, it's near an L station, but we will probably also use cabs/Uber/Lyft 7y
ErinC My favorite city ever! 7y

Lola The ones closest to downtown are Sandmeyer's, which is in Printer's Row, Open Books (the Lake Street location) and After-Words. If you go a little south to Hyde Park (Obama's old neighborhood) 57th Street books is my favorite. There is also their sister bookstore, the Co-Op and a Powell's. If you head north, there are quite a few great ones but it depends on what neighborhoods plan to visit. If you explore Pilsen, Pilsen Community Books is great 7y
vivastory I highly recommend Myopic Books 7y
vivastory Also, the American Writers Museum 7y
Alicia @Lola omg thank you sooo much these are amazing recommendations!!! I have no idea exactly where we plan to go in terms of neighborhoods but I'm hoping we can hit some of these! Thank you again!! ☺️☺️☺️📚📚📚 7y
Alicia @vivastory thank you!! We are big museum buffs so that sounds awesome! 7y
Lola @vivastory Yes! This recently opened and is very easy to miss. It's on the second floor of a nondescript building right on Michigan Avenue. (edited) 7y
Lola @Alicia My pleasure!! I love my city and all it has to offer! If you do the Museum Campus area, you'll be very close to Hyde Park and its three indies :) (edited) 7y
Mimi28 If you go to Oak Park go to The BookTable. It's a couple of blocks off of Harlem on The Green Line L. It's my fav! 7y
Mimi28 Www.thebooktable.com 7y
Aswenson Not book related, but if you've never done the architect's boat tour on the river it's amazing! 7y
stacybmartin I went for a work conference and stayed at the Marriott right by the river downtown - I google-mapped 'bookstores' and found one called After-Words literally right around the corner from my hotel. It was small but fun! 7y
Jbakesmcgee3 Myopic is great! And the neighborhood (wicker park) is super fun too! So is women and children first off the red line which is also close to a cool comic shop called alley cat comics for any graphic novel reads. 7y
Alicia @Mimi28 thank you!!!! It looks awesome! 7y
Alicia @Lola thank you again! I am gonna push for Hyde Park it seems the coolest for books. We are going to a White sox game so not too far! 7y
Lola @Alicia Perfect!!! 7y
Lola @stacybmartin I love After-Words. Cool and quirky. 7y
Alicia @Aswenson thank you!!! That sounds super fun! 7y
Alicia @stacybmartin thank you! I actually think that's the hotel my friends are staying at so we can hit that one up too! (Furiously thinks of ways to pack less to buy more books) 7y
Alicia @Jbakesmcgee3 thank you for all the recs!!! I do love graphic novels... 7y
Lola @Jbakesmcgee3 Both WACF and Alley Cat won this year's Chicago Reader award (a local newspaper) for best bookstore and best comics store. 7y

I really don't need anymore books but... meh. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm headed to Chicago this weekend. Any indie book stores not too far out of the way (I'm staying in Hyde Park and will also spend a lot of time in the Loop I'd expect) that I have to visit?

StephBengtson Myopic Books and Quimby's if you're in wicker park! 7y
8little_paws OK you're in Hyde Park? You've got amazing options. 57th Street books, seminary co op, Powell's used books. Those three alone are fantastic. 7y
8little_paws The loop: Sandmeyer's, after-words, open books, also there's a Chicago indie press owned bookstore inside the revival food hall called curbside books which is worth a visit for both the bookstore and the food. 7y

Loretta @8little_paws @StephBengtson Thanks so much for the recs! I will write these down and mark them on Google Maps. Probably only enough time to get to a couple since I'll mostly be visiting with friends. 😊 7y
StephBengtson Awesome! Have fun! 7y
Lmstraubie You can always use just one more book 😉 And you are supporting the local book seller! 7y

#booktober best sidekick, eh? How about the talking dog that guides our main character around his new town? This book is of interest if you've lived here, but if not, I'd pass on it. It's very nostalgic. @RealLifeReading
