One Thousand White Women
One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd | Jim Fergus
52 posts | 96 read | 88 to read
One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.

Historical fiction, but a very different setting from what I normally read. An incredibly moving story. I was in tears toward the end. Beautifully written and engrossing. I was totally pulled in. Why did I wait so long to read this?

I really didn‘t expect to get so immersed in this book. It‘s not the sort of thing I would normally pick up, and I‘m also not generally a fan of epistolary novels. But I‘m fascinated. About halfway through, and anxious to read more. Picture is from Brasstown Bald in Georgia; I was looking through my albums for something atmospheric and a little bit wild.

I liked this book - the narrator was really good - but had some issues with what I saw as one major character inconsistency: May never really addresses the issue of multiple wives. Not in the way I would have expected from her character. Just me?

This book had an interesting premise. Overall, I found it an intriguing and quick book. There were times I found the main character too irreverent, but at other times I liked her very much. I found the variety of personalities of the women made me want to know more about them. I liked the idea of these strong women surviving in a tough situation. The ending of the book took me somewhat by surprise. #MountTBR

This book was fascinating and heartbreaking at the same time. Much of the book I felt transported to the Great Plains and the Cheyenne culture. While I understood the author‘s reasoning to use journals and letters to convey ideas and move the story along, at times it seemed to be lacking. Also, I always appreciate insight into the author‘s inspiration and writing process. #gettoknowtheauthor

This one is a bail for me, at least for now. Maybe it's just my frame of mind right now but I'm finding so many details annoying. The characters don't feel like people to me, more like stereotypical portrayals each assigned detail or two meant to make them stand out, like the author was working from a checklist. The protagonist is irritating me to no end! It's too bad, I wanted so much to like this one. 🏳↩❌

It seems to be seldom said that men or even young boys should be held solely responsible for their own thoughts and actions toward the females with which they come into contact. It is instead considered a direct result of a woman somehow tempting or seducing him by the manner in which she is dressed or acting or speaking.

Interesting book with a few annoying details. Must every important man want her? Characters feel like a checklist, not real.

#TBRtemptation post! This award-winning historical fiction novel has a 3.87 GR rating with 84,000 ratings. That tells you something! And everyone praises the book for its vivid portrait of the American Old West. The Grant Administration launches the "Brides For Indian" program. Pioneer women go west to marry Cheyenne Indians to help them assimilate. May Dodd is one of those women in 1875. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

Here are some of the books from my library sale shopping spree! The top 4 on the right are books I read in my youth. I've been collecting old hardcover copies of many of my favorites. Excited about all of them. I kept suggesting books to other shoppers and eventually had 4 women following me around and adding to their bags. Ha! Once a librarian, always a librarian. Read any of these? Thoughts?

Dogearedcopy Other people seem to like Margaret Atwood's 'The Blind Assassin' more than I do! I wanted the novel-within-the-novel to have more life; and though I'm quibbling, the present-day story has a 70s vibe to it that didn't quite feel right to me; but like I said, other people seem to really like it *and it did win the Booker Prize!* 3y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders I have One Thousand White Women on my shelf too. I've read The Blind Assassin ?and The Secret Chord. I had trouble with Secret Chord because of the "transliteration" of the Hebrew names as Brooks describes it. But great looking stack!! 3y

If you take the book for what it is (fiction) it's very enjoyable. Doesn't read like a classic, nor is it about a man... rather a woman's journey into finding happiness and friendship in an unexpected place. About giving up civilized society and the constraints therein. I really enjoyed it.

The author made all of the female characters the epitome of stereotypes and it was very hard to feel anything about the book except readiness to finish. I did sympathize with the main character toward the very end, thus the so-so rating. Great concept, but I didn't care for the execution.
