What Now? | Ann Patchett
post image

Every day, all day (as it feels like we‘re on the 1,000 month of this administration). That & when I hear “breaking news” all I wonder is what ridiculous thing has the occupant of the WH said or done now.

Eggbeater There's breaking news several times a day now! 1mo
Aims42 Oof, I feel this 😖 I swear I‘ve been in flight or fight mode since Jan. 20th 🙄 1mo

Librarybelle Every time I get an alert my cats hear a lot of things… I agree with you, @Aims42 . 1mo
lil1inblue Every morning before I start reading the news I think to myself “What fresh hell awaits us today?“ And yet I am never really prepared for whatever it happens to be. 😭 😡 😳 😰 1mo
Amiable I‘m eagerly awaiting the obituary notice. Come on, karma bus! Where are you?? 1mo
Deblovestoread I feel all of this every f'ing minute of every day. It's exhausting. 1mo
AnnCrystal Absolutely, and those Emergency Alert tests always has us jumping these days. 1mo
Bette A friend just told me her 90 yr old aunt was musing out loud and said: everyday I wake up and hope he‘s dead. 1mo

This was quite a unique read. I could relate to some stories and they made me tear up, while others felt so far away from me. But that‘s what makes these columns special. I think everyone can relate one way or another

Everyone needs a Dear Sugar in their life. I didn‘t know these columns in which she answers questions about love, life, sex and other complicated matters. But she can write and she‘s so honest and I loved reading her advice. Some made me tear up too. A book to return to. Thank you Meg, for sending me this one ❤️❤️

Lesliereadsalot He‘s cute! Did somebody style his hair or does it always look that perfect? 🩷 4mo
BarbaraBB @Lesliereadsalot Thanks ❤️ I think it‘s a lot of gel and a bit of luck 😉 4mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I know and I can see why. She‘s awesome and so honest! 4mo
BarbaraBB @JamieArc I don‘t know her, only read Wild but she seems a very honest and intelligent woman, a really nice one 4mo
ImperfectCJ Ugh! These big, grown-up people who were once so little! It's wonderful and heartbreaking at the same time! I might have to check out this book on your recommendation...not a huge fan of Strayed, but I have to remember that she isn't Elizabeth Gilbert, even though they're stored in the same part of my brain (I actually finished Wild while I couldn't stand Eat, Pray, Love). 4mo
BarbaraBB @ImperfectCJ I haven‘t even tried Elizabeth Gilbert, i think I can‘t stand Eat, Pray etc. But Strayed is different. I liked Wild and in these columns she gives (mostly love related) advice to people who write her. Some of these columns will touch you, I‘m sure, and the others aren‘t overly cheesy even if she‘s called Sugar in them. 4mo

This is a wonderful little guide for what to say and what not to say (and what to do/not to do) when someone is going through a hard thing. I‘m a medium, hospice volunteer and an abortion doula—and there is always something new I learn. A favorite word: Kummerspeck: grief bacon. It means, eating your feelings. We all experience Trauerklob sometimes; we must acknowledge it when others do to, but gently approach it. This book is great for ⬇️

So my Litsy friends. Which one should I start with, which should I skip?

staci.reads Circe is incredible if you're in the mood for a feminist myth retelling. House in the Cerulean Sea is so endearing and hits the heart if that's more your mood right now. Bith 5 star books for me but completely different experiences. 5mo

A low pick for this library book, a graphic bio focusing specifically on the author's experience of breaking into animation work in LA.
This could have been too niche, but, while there is zero chance of this being my new life direction (🤣), the specificity about a career, city & lifestyle utterly different to my own was of interest.
Text heavy, with lots of career tips, but mercifully short enough that I only skipped a few pages at the end! 🤫
