A governess in a French chateau encounters an apparent plot against her young charge's life in this unforgettably haunting and beautifully written suspense novel. When lovely Linda Martin first arrives at Chateau Valmy as an English governess to the nine-year-old Count Philippe de Valmy, the opulence and history surrounding her seems like a wondrous, ecstatic dream. But a palpable terror is crouching in the shadows. Philippe's uncle, Leon de Valmy, is the epitome of charm, yet dynamic and arroganthis paralysis little hindrance as he moves noiselessly in his wheelchair from room to room. Only his son Raoul, a handsome, sardonic man who drives himself and his car with equally reckless abandon, seems able to stand up to him. To Linda, Raoul is an enigmathough irresistibly attracted to him, she senses some dark twist in his nature. When an accident deep in the woods nearly kills Linda's innocent charge, she begins to wonder if someone has deadly plans for the young count."

Read in March.

This was my first experience with Mary Stewart and I need to remember to remember to read more by her. Set in 1950s France, an English woman becomes governess to a young heir, who may be in danger. This gave me Rebecca and Jane Eyre vibes at times, and I really enjoyed this gothic suspense novel.

mabell I loved this one! 3w
Crazeedi I read so many of her books growing up! Faves!! 3w
Bookzombie @mabell @Crazeedi I don‘t know how I have never read her books before. 3w

What a lovely #AussieSecretSanta parcel! Thank you so much, Sharni 😍😘 I love it all. I‘m completely on board with your suggestion to buddy read. I‘ve never read Mary Stewart but I absolutely want to and the Henry Davenforth Files is on my TBR because of @GlassAsDiamonds who I miss very much (please come back if you‘re reading this GAD) so I‘m really looking forward to reading that.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Awesome ☺️ I‘m ready whenever you are! Merry Christmas Carolyn 🎄😊 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I know you are not on Instagram - but it does look like Glassasdiamonds account there is still active - so if you didn‘t have an alternate means of contact… 1y
CarolynM @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I posted this earlier today but only realised I hadn‘t tagged you just now🙄😬Sorry about that. January probably won‘t be a good time for me to commit to any new buddy reads, but maybe we could try in February? I‘ll set myself a reminder about it. Thanks for the Insta suggestion, I might just go stalk her there😆 1y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, no worries 😉 I‘ve been periodically checking the hashtag to see if people have opened their gifts. February sounds perfect! I don‘t really plan my reading at all - so anytime is fine. Little Insta stalking is good for the soul 😝 (there wasn‘t recent photos - but there was a 2022 story reel) (edited) 1y
Freespirit Hi Carolyn thank you so much for the lovely Christmas card😘 Merry Christmas to you and your family. Look forward to lots of book discussions in the year to come xxx 1y
mabell Nine Coaches Waiting is so good! 1y
CarolynM @Freespirit 🌲😘 1y
CarolynM @mabell Good to know🙂 Merry Christmas to you🌲💕 1y
GlassAsDiamonds Took me a hot minute - you still online? 2mo
CarolynM @GlassAsDiamonds Yes, right now even! What a lovely surprise to see your name come up. How have you been? 2mo
GlassAsDiamonds Busy with a lot of bad? Hope it‘s over now but damn it‘s been a lot (skimmed over in a post but sheeesh). Did you like the Henry Davenforth? 2mo
CarolynM @GlassAsDiamonds I was going to tell you the last year has been a clusterf**k but it‘s got nothing on your experience (parents with rapidly accelerating dementia) and I‘ve read very little other than romances, a couple of them over and over, just for comfort. Like you I‘m hoping the worst is over and I can start reading like I used to. 2mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM oohhh that‘s a rough ride, sorry to hear that, it‘s horribly exhausting isn‘t it (I‘m confident you‘d tell me Listy doesn‘t do comparative f*ckery 😉 bad is bad). I found the same thing - dodgy romance novellas 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ were all I had the capacity for. 2mo
CarolynM @GlassAsDiamonds I hope we‘ll be chatting about more worthy literature soon😂 2mo
GlassAsDiamonds @CarolynM given my TBR, we may need to reassess “worthy” 🤣 2mo

After much debate, I‘ve decided I‘m in a “young woman takes a governess job in a possibly sinister castle” mood.

Tamra Sounds like fun - I‘ll look for an audio version. 2y
xicanti @Tamra it‘s really good so far, aside from a couple instances of 1950s dodginess. 2y

This was fun! I read it in a single sitting. Definitely an easier read than The Crystal Cave 😉 Will have to find more of Stewart‘s thrillers.

shanaqui My favourite is Madam Will You Talk? 2y
shanaqui Argh, pressed send too soon -- the hero annoys me and yet... Idk, I love it. 2y
rabbitprincess @shanaqui That might have to be my next one by her! 2y
shanaqui @rabbitprincess My favourite thing is that the heroine has loved before, but doesn't find love again DESPITE that but BECAUSE of it. I think that's the thing that I like best.

That and the fact that she drives like a racer. 😂

A classic gothic romance and suspense novel from the 1950s set in France. Don‘t let the age of the book fool you! It‘s a mix of Rebecca and Jane Eyre. Really good.

Stewart's use of adjectives and metaphors to create the perfect setting is incomparable. I became immersed in the meticulous attention to atmospheric detail, and was easily enthralled in the story. A wonderful way to spend a sunny afternoon!

Book 1 in HP winter magical readathon.I modified the rule😲I had to read a 500 pages book, well I read 2 books instead😉A gothic romance, suspense, mystery thriller book.Plot can be predictable but you forget about that because it was beautifully written. It can be boring for some people because it is very descriptive and slow in the action but I loved it.It caused me anxiety at some point. Cheesy end but I didn't care😍3.9⭐️Thanks @mabell

mabell Yay!! I‘m so glad you liked it!! I think I‘m a credulous reader - I didn‘t predict anything 😂 4y
Gissy @mabell I think I read too many thrillers but I suspected immediately that those two characters were involved. When Linda and Philippe escaped I was so anxious in all those pages because I didn't know if they were going to be caught😱That part was so good. I really enjoyed it. They even mentioned Jane Eyre, one of favorite novels❤️Once again, thank you. It was a beautiful novel. 4y

Wow. Just wow. Thrilling, mysterious, entrancing, I loved it!

Just when you think you know what is going on, the atmosphere changes, the “facts” aren‘t what they seem, and with, Linda you are caught in a terrifying cat and mouse game, protecting the little heir Philippe from the deadly designs of an unseen enemy.

If you have never read a Mary Stewart, this one would be a great one to start with! Thank you so much for sending it @LeahBergen ! 😊

Tonight‘s self-care after a crazy busy two days back at work: classic Mary Stewart (it smells like an attic full of old books and honestly I keep sniffing it...), a beer, and not folding this laundry pile. It was supposed to be a bath, too, but the drain plug thingy broke! 😩 Here‘s to tomorrow not feeling like Monday all over again for the 3rd time....

Lcsmcat I love Mary Stewart! So many happy memories. 5y

A terrific romantic suspense novel set post WWII in France. Linda is an orphaned governess who comes to France to care for a young boy with a large inheritance, whose life might be in danger. Raoul is the enigmatic cousin of the boy who may or may not be a suspect. #romantsy

#bookmail !! Thank you so much, Leah, I love both of your choices! I've never read Friday's Child, and Nine Coaches Waiting will be perfect for the next dark and stormy night.

The #150pnpcoverparty challenge was so much fun, and you were terrific hosts @CrowCAH & @LeahBergen ! ❤️

I offered to share with the starlet, but Bella says that still doesn't make up for the Wickham nonsense 😂

CrowCAH Your welcome! Glad to add to the TBR pile!!! Poor Bella; she‘s a good sport! 6y

I don‘t know if any of you are Mary Stewart fans (mysteries), but a bunch of her classics are available in ebook for the first time and really cheap ($.99-3.99US). One of my favorite authors mentioned this on her FB page this morning, and I decided if she loves her work so much, I‘d better check it out. So I nabbed a few...😊 Aren‘t the covers cool?! 😎
