Tom's Midnight Garden
Tom's Midnight Garden | Philippa Pearce
When Tom hears the grandfather clock strike thirteen he is not prepared for what is going to happen. Outside the back door is a garden, which everyone tells him doesn't exist. But the magical place in which Tom finds himself is certainly a garden - his midnight garden. Tom's Midnight Garden won The Carnegie Medal when it was first published in 1958. It has been a bestseller ever since. This hardback gift edition features a ribbon marker, coloured endpapers, and a glossy laminated jacket.

I saw this on my TBR and was sure I had a copy on my shelves from a children‘s lit class back in college, but it must‘ve grown legs and walked away… Libby had the BBC full cast version available, and I have to say it lost some of the magic on audio. Also my memory of the story was fuzzy at best so apparently I wasn‘t really paying attention that week in class 😬 The story itself is gold though, so maybe it‘s time to replace my print copy.

#WinterReadathonDailyChallenge My pick for Children‘s Day is a book I reread constantly as a child. I loved the idea of opening an ordinary door and finding a new world beyond it as a kid. Escapism was high on my agenda then as it still is today. Highly recommend for any child.

Andrew65 A wonderful book that brings back memories of my childhood. 🎅🎅🎅 1y

If you ever need reminding about the beauty and depth of children‘s literature, pick this one up! Loved it. 💙

BookNAround I adore this book. I first read it in a kiddie lit class in college and tried to get any of my crew to read it. I don‘t think any of them took me up on it. 1y

I ended up really loving this one! There were a couple of slow parts, but it was a lovely story. It didn‘t feel like typical British children‘s lit. There was more emotion and depth to it. I think this book will stay with me for a while. #childrensclassicread2020

Oh I loved this one!

“The final reconciliation between Tom, still a child, and the elderly Hatty is, many have argued, one of the most moving moments in children's fiction”

My first time listening to this children's classic. I found out about it through our #overbookedclub read last month. It's reminiscent of The Secret Garden, but this one has time travel.

The #MusicOfTheNight in this childhood favourite is an old grandfather clock striking thirteen.

Tom is sent to stay at his aunt‘s house (under quarantine for measles) and discovers a garden that doesn‘t exist by day ... and a new little friend from another time.

I adored this book and now I feel like immediately rereading it. 💚💙💚💙

We‘ve had an awesome day here at Parker Zoo! This is the first time our grandbaby Sophie has stayed over on her own, no little brother to compete with(and a lot less noise thank god) Now she‘s tucked up on the lounge with a good book, a heating pad & a panda sleep mask.🐼 I‘m so happy I‘ve finally got a child that‘s just as obsessed with books as I was at her age!🎉 #raisingreaders #grandkidsareawesome #cantsleepwithoutapanda

#BookMail Pt6 The next three books are ones I‘ve bought for my granddaughter Sophie. This book was essential in my reading life as a kid, I think I had the library copy for almost a year coz I kept reborrowing it every time it ran out.My first time travel story, it‘s about a boy who‘s sent to stay with relatives when his brother gets the measles. After he hears an enchanted clock strike 13, he finds a beautiful garden outside instead of a car park.

#JulyInBooks18 #day2 #FavoriteTimeTravelBook I‘ve read a few books involving time travel but this is the one that comes first to mind when asked this question. I was obsessed with this book as a child. We were 5 kids & poor growing up so owning books was a non starter so both my schools library & council library were my best friends. If you could see the original cards at both libraries for this book, my name would be the most written by far.11⭐️

I always love when I can work & read in a café. Mr. S & I try to make it to our favourite haunt each weekend. A cup or two of our favourite drinks & a few relaxing hours to read, catch up on emails and enjoy each other‘s company. I‘m currently taking a creative course, so I was clicking away on the computer. Afterwards we grabbed a bite to eat, & made a quick stop at Barnes & Noble. I picked up a copy of the tagged book. It sounds delightful!

EvieBee Lovely! I‘ve always wanted to read this one too. Remember when they used to cut the covers off used books so they couldn‘t be resold? I remember have a copy that of this book and it made me not as inclined to read it when I was young. 6y

catebutler @EvieBee Thank you! One of my friends mentioned that she had just bought this for her son, so I made a note of it. I‘m so surprised that I hadn‘t heard of it before! I‘m so glad I never really ran into a used bookstore that would do that to books, but I do remember seeing books without covers. I‘m such a cover snob, I probably would have been the same as you about a coverless book! A good cover is one of the key factors for me to buy a book. 6y

I‘m fighting off the flu and wanted something cozy to read, so I snagged this off my daughter‘s shelf. It was such a lovely joy. There wasn‘t a single false note in it, from the gently enchanted slow burn of the plot, to Tom‘s portrayal as s complicated, interesting, very UN-generic little boy. I really loved it.

Next in #LizsLibraryLoves is Toms Midnight Garden, a book about a boy who is sent to his aunts city flat when his brother gets measles. Because he may be infectious he's under quarantine & unable to play with other children. Until one night when the clock downstairs strikes 13 & he finds a huge sunlit garden where before there was only a parking lot. Befriended by a young girl, he spends his nights exploring the garden & a different time. ❤️🌳🌷🌻

"And the grandfather clock still went on striking, as if it had lost all count of time; and, while it struck, Tom, with joy in his heart, drew the bolt, turned the door-handle, opened the door and walked out into his garden, that he knew was waiting for him."
