Blue Shoes and Happiness
Blue Shoes and Happiness: More from the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency | Alexander McCall Smith
15 posts | 32 read | 8 to read
In this seventh installment in the internationally bestselling, universally beloved series, there is considerable excitement at the shared premises of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors. A cobra has been found in Precious Ramotswes office. Then a nurse from a local medical clinic reveals to Mma Ramotswe that faulty blood-pressure readings are being recorded there. And it looks as though Aunty Emang, the advice columnist in the local newspaper, may not be what she seems. It all means a lot of work for Mma Ramotswe and her inestimable assistant, Grace Makutsi, and they are, of course, up to the challenge. But theres trouble brewing in Mma Makutsis own life. Her greedy uncles are demanding an extra-large bride price from her well-to-do fianc, a man of substance, Phuti Radiphuti, and though money may buy her that fashionably narrow (and uncomfortable) pair of blue shoes, it wont buy her the happiness that Mma Ramotswe promises her shell find in simpler things in contentment with the world and enough tea to smooth over the occasional bumps in the road. From the Hardcover edition.

You can‘t get much cozier than Mma Ramotswe and crew. There‘s only one fatality, and it‘s a bird, not a human. I will admit, I did stress out when Mma Makutsi‘s engagement seemed to be threatened. I guess the real mystery is will Mr. J. L.B. Matekoni‘s apprentices ever amount to anything? 🤔😅

#CloakandDaggerChristmas for the prompt “read a cozy mystery “.

Tamra My favorite cozy! 💙💙💙 4mo

jlhammar Killers of a Certain Age is a fun one. I'll be interested to read your thoughts on the Tey - I so enjoyed Daughter of Time and Franchise Affair (and have Miss Pym Disposes ready to try next). Oh, and I've been wanting to try The Widows of Malabar Hill. Looks like a great month of reading! 5mo
kwmg40 Nice list! I didn't have The Singing Sands on my list for this challenge, but it's on my shelves and maybe I'll squeeze that one in too. 5mo
Larkken Oh man, Malabar Hill and Rose Code have been on my tbr so. long. Lol. Maybe you've inspired me and this can be the time! 5mo

The cases seemed more complex in this one and there was character growth as well. Another stellar entry. 🥰

Another fabulous book in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. This one had a number of “cases” to solve, but it saw the growth of a couple of the characters as well. These are such comforting reads and Mma Ramotswe is such a calming, wise woman.

First finish for #20in4 and another #Seriesread2021
This also fills my #audiobook prompt for #Booked2021

TheSpineView Great job! 3y

Another satisfying installment in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. Mma Romatswe takes on a theft at a college, a shady Dr, a superstition haunting a small village, and a blackmailer. As always, she shares many cups of bush tea with her friends along the way.

I have my whole crew close by this morning, as we‘ve got some serious thunderstorms moving through. No one cares for all that noise!

I find the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series of books such fun, comforting stories. They're like wearing an old pair of slippers on a cold and blustery night. I know what I'm going to get, I love the characters, I love the setting and I'm going to feel warmed from the inside reading it.

Laura317 I know! And I can hear Precious' voice in my head so clearly. It's such a beautiful, lyrical voice. 7y

It's beautiful here today. The perfect day for reading on the deck enjoying the sunshine and warm breeze. AMS is one of my go-to fun easy reads. This is one of the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency books, and I think I will have read them all after this. Enjoy your Saturday, hope it's just as nice where you are.

Libby1 He is one of my favourites. Have you read the Scotland Street series? 7y

#reread

As a rule I'm not a rereader but Blue Shoes and Happiness made me change my ways.

This book is sheer joy.

Suzze I am not a rereader either. I thought about it, but only came up with kids' books. 7y
Libby1 @Suzze - there are too many books to read for me to reread! I just had to reread this one, though. Imaginary talking shoes sealed the deal for me. 7y
