“Myself was formed—a carpenter—
An unpretending time
My Plane—and I, together wrought
Before a Builder came—

To measure our attainments—
Had we the Art of Boards
Sufficiently developed—He‘d hire us
At Halves—

My Tools took Human—Faces—
The Bench, where we had toiled—
Against the Man—persuaded—
We—Temples build—I said—“

Remembering Emily Dickinson on her birthday.

Dickinson wrote a lot of poems - there are 1775 in this collection. This collection is comprehensive and well organized. Many of her early poems are very girly things about flowers and bees, but you can see her mature as both a person and a poet as you progress through the collection. Like any artist, there is a lot of so-so stuff here, a lot of pretty good, and a few amazing. Overall, 4⭐️

WHO never wanted,—maddest joy
Remains to him unknown;
The banquet of abstemiousness
Surpasses that of wine.

Within its hope, though yet ungrasped 5
Desire‘s perfect goal,
No nearer, lest reality
Should disenthrall thy soul.

muscogulus I like the use of “infiniter,” which would seem obtuse in a lesser poet. 2y

I NEVER saw a moor,
I never saw the sea;
Yet know I how the heather looks,
And what a wave must be.
I never spoke with God,
Nor visited in heaven;
Yet certain am I of the spot
As if the chart were given.

Trust Emily Dickinson to flip the switch, as it were, and describe a #rayoflight as oppressive, "like the heft of cathedral tunes" ?

‘A Shade upon the mind there passes‘

A Shade upon the mind there passes
As when on Noon
A Cloud the mighty Sun encloses
Remembering

That some there be too numb to notice
Oh God
Why give if Thou must take away
The Loved?

(Portrayal of Emily Dickinson by Cynthia Nixon).

”You cannot put a Fire out”

You cannot put a Fire out —
A Thing that can ignite
Can go, itself, without a Fan —
Upon the slowest Night —

You cannot fold a Flood —
And put it in a Drawer —
Because the Winds would find it out —
And tell your Cedar Floor —

By Emily Dickinson.

#YourBestAmericanGirl didn't know literary fame during her lifetime, with only a handful of poems published while she was alive. It still blows my mind every time I think about it.

queerbookreader She was queer!! Or idk i feel weird applying modern terms to old figures but at least some type of definitely not heterosexual. There was a second photo of her found a few years ago posing with a woman that some scholars think was her romantic partner. Emily sent some 🔥🔥🔥 letters to her. Later in life she had this thing for her brother's wife and she also sent some firey letters to her 😭 there are at least 2 books ik that cover her sexuality 4y

Billypar Great pick! She's at the top of my list of poets to read when I finally get around to reading more poetry... I'll just add that to my already growing list of 2019 reading resolutions 🙄 4y
batsy @queerbookreader I was wondering about that. I'll look up some books on it. Have you read any that you'd recommend! 4y
batsy @queerbookreader That was meant to be a question "?" and not an exclamation ? 4y
