*2018 LOCUS AWARD WINNER OF BEST SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL**2018 HUGO AWARD FINALIST FOR BEST NOVEL*"John Scalzi is the most entertaining, accessible writer working in SF today." --Joe Hill, author of The FiremanThe first novel of a new space-opera sequence set in an all-new universe by the Hugo Award-winning, New York Times-bestselling author of Redshirts and Old Man's WarOur universe is ruled by physics. Faster than light travel is impossible--until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field available at certain points in space-time, which can take us to other planets around other stars.Riding The Flow, humanity spreads to innumerable other worlds. Earth is forgotten. A new empire arises, the Interdependency, based on the doctrine that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war--and, for the empire's rulers, a system of control.The Flow is eternal--but it's not static. Just as a river changes course, The Flow changes as well. In rare cases, entire worlds have been cut off from the rest of humanity. When it's discovered that the entire Flow is moving, possibly separating all human worlds from one another forever, three individuals--a scientist, a starship captain, and the emperox of the Interdependency--must race against time to discover what, if anything, can be salvaged from an interstellar empire on the brink of collapse."Fans of Game of Thrones and Dune will enjoy this bawdy, brutal, and brilliant political adventure" --Booklist on The Collapsing Empire"Political plotting, plenty of snark, puzzle-solving, and a healthy dose of action...Scalzi continues to be almost insufferably good at his brand of fun but think-y sci-fi adventure." --Kirkus Reviews on The Collapsing Empire"Scalzi is one of the slickest writers that SF has ever produced." --The Wall Street Journal on The Human DivisionThe Interdependency Series1. This space opera was so much fun to read, and exactly what I needed during a hectic week at work. Fun, fast, and foul-mouthed - it was a blast!

It is a beautiful night to sit outside and read. Although I don't read a lot of scifi I am really enjoying this book.

Geeklet I really enjoyed that book. It‘s an easy read. Scalzi always writes the same type of characters but that‘s okay, I like his characters. I need to read the sequel. 1mo
litenthusiast @geeklet Thanks, I'm glad to hear it is a quick read. I have friends who really like his books, so I decided to try this one. I'm enjoying it so far. 4w

This was a fast, fun and f-bomb filled tale of political intrigue in a sprawling empire run by powerful Guild families, the Church of Interdependency, and an ailing Emperor. I loved the characters and can't wait to start the sequel, The Consuming Fire. Good stuff.

A re-read for my #sciencefiction book group. It was better the second time around because I‘d read the second book in the trilogy (series?) & understood some of what was coming. As someone in my book group pointed out, it‘s weird to have the whole empire/monarchy thing, and the Flow is kind of hand-wavy math, but it‘s interesting anyway ... here at the End of everything (HINT HINT CLIMATE CHANGE). Four ⭐️. Or rather 🚀🚀🚀🚀.

Part of my latest library haul: In the far future, there's an empire of distant planets, only reachable by long space journeys. Then something happens... The story is told by several pov characters. I would have preferred more science and less politics. It wasn't my first Scalzi and probably not the last, but I don't think that I will continue this series.
For the #SFFTBRChallenge prompt Set in the future.
@DuckOfDoom

RamsFan1963 If you read the Old Man's War series, you noticed it moved from straight space opera action to a more politically oriented story as it progressed. I don't mind a little politics. I enjoyed this, but I haven't gotten around to the sequel yet. 5mo
PickwickPlockPlock @RamsFan1963 I read the Old Man's War series. It's been some time, I don't remember much details, but I think I enjoyed the first book the most. Maybe you hit on the reason why 🤔 5mo
RamsFan1963 @PickwickPlockPlock Yes it's more fun to read about the building of a Federation or Empire, than it is to read about the administration and bureaucracy of it. 5mo

Okay, I definitely didnt hate it. Its a good space opera. The characters were all mostly dicks, which I enjoy, but he failed at making me root for them in some way. It just wasnt the most engaging political intuige story ever, but shit is starting to go down at the end of the book, so maybe it will get better in the 2nd. Definitly will pick up book two at somepoint, I might try to wait for an audible sale.

The idea that life as we know it is reaching its expiration date, yet we refuse to believe the science and take action before its to late...is a sobering premise for this book. I really enjoyed the story themes and the ideas, but to love it - I need to get more familiar with Scalzi clipped & comic narration. There were some fab characters, but the book read more like a film script than a novel and for me that left it a little bare.

Cool, so I have insomnia and I have to work in five hours. I finished this up instead of sleeping. Honestly, it‘s a pretty cool space book but it feels kinda average. The characters are so funny that I couldn‘t take the story very seriously. The characters are a bit one dimensional, although they have great zingers. I generally like Scalzi‘s work but it‘s not for everyone. The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger which is a huge bummer.

Lauram Welcome to 1:30am!!!! I just got home from watching my niece and nephew. The Diet Coke I drank 2 hours ago seemed like such a great idea at the time. I hope you fall asleep soon. 11mo

My first Scalzi read. I really liked the story premise, but the execution wasn't for me. It's like the author is trying really hard to be super edgy and it's coming across as just kinda gross or lazy. And the dumbest names for ships that I've ever read.

I've been a Scalzi fan for a long time (Lock In is my fave), and this book was great! It's the first book in a new universe, so if you don't want to go back and pick up Old Man's War, this is a terrific starting point into Scalzi. (Though I'll still always rec Lock In, too.) This is his most Bujoldesque book, so if you're a Vorkosigan fan, again a good place to start. Can't wait till the next installment.

Snow day for me today, but my husband had to work, so I‘m using the time to finish up some books 😍. I really enjoyed this one, though I understand Scalzi‘s sense of humor is not for everyone. And speaking as a person who curses like the proverbial sailor, there were a LOT of F-words. But it was a good adventure story. My cat keeps trying to steal my spot and my blanket....
