1. I mainly read the blurb of the book to decide if I want to read/buy it.

2. This is probably my favorite autobiography I‘ve read (so far). If you do decide to listen to it on audio, I‘d recommend listening on one of the fastest speeds. The narrator almost sounds like Robin at times.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Robin Williams‘s iconic career spanned decades. His brand of comedy was so eccentric, causing an immediate standout from peers. He was a damned good actor, too. I had somehow completely forgotten about Dead Poets Society! Must rewatch soon. I‘m saddened by the suffering he endured toward the end of his life. Only he can truly understand. Whether you‘re a massive fan or not, this is a fascinating biography of a unique, challenging life.

Scochrane26 I loved Dead Poets Society, it‘s so amazing. But, I never rewatch because I can‘t handle the end. 1y
MicheleinPhilly I loved Robin so much. This may seem weird to say but I had an aunt pass away from the disease he was diagnosed with so I can understand why he did what he did. It is a truly awful affliction. ❤️ 1y
britt_brooke @MicheleinPhilly I don‘t think that sounds weird at all. 💚 I can‘t imagine what it‘s like to experience such an awful disease. 1y

Gosh I miss Robin, his warmth, humor and all the joyfulness he made us feel. There are many details in the book including what‘s behind the tragic ending of his life that I didn‘t know...
I just think, feeling all alone in life is a dark moment we‘ve all been to. How can we know better if loved ones were there and needed us to pull them out? How can we respond better? Just finished the latest season of The Sinner...and this has been on my mind...

This is one of the best biographies I've read/listened to. There was a roller coaster of emotions ranging from laugh-out-loud laughter to tear-jerking sadness. I thoroughly enjoyed the narrator; he kind of brought Robin's voice to life. I should mention that I listened to the audiobook at 1.4 speed. I think it's the perfect speed for this book.

RIP Robin

slategreyskies Addiction is so scary. It makes me feel helpless sometimes when faced with its harsh realities. We lost my sister-in-law last year to a heroin overdose. It felt like it came out of nowhere, as she had always been dependable, a rock and a peacemaker. But she got addicted fast and didn‘t make it out alive. I cried for her, and I cried for Robin Williams too. There‘s too much pain in the world. I‘m not an addict, but I‘ve seen the pain in others.💔 2y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @slategreyskies my step sister has overdosed twice... she has been an addict since she was 14, she is 30 now. Supposedly just drinks and smokes pot... my dad and stepmother drink, my mom is in an assisted living facility because she is 65 and has always been on pot, pills and some kind of other drug... her sister had a drinking problem, but is clean now. Some laugh out loud moments, many tragic, some surprising elements are in this bio of, IMO, a comic genius. His early life, marriages, personal and professional doubts, and death are detailed. I always worried about Williams cracking and breaking.

I started this book a while ago (i.e. May 2018 😳) and picked it back up recently. It started with Robin‘s childhood which was somewhat sad, but I enjoyed reading about his career and learned more about what really happened at the end of his life. I have such fond memories of watching Mork and Mindy as a child and I loved Mrs. Doubtfire. Although I noticed a few editing/grammatical errors towards the end, I highly recommend this biography!

ljuliel I don‘t think I could bring myself to read this. He was such a talent . I can remember when he first got started and was on Johnny Carson and was so freaking funny. I‘d rather remember those days than how his days ended. I had a friend I met when I was 4 , who chose to end his life when he was 38. I still miss him and think of him a lot. I think suicide is just a trigger for me. (edited) 3y
CaitlinByTheBook @ljuliel I completely understand. I was hesitant the whole book knowing I would get to the part about the end of his life. It helped me to read about his Parkinson‘s diagnosis which was later determined to be a more rare, and fast progressing disease that likely contributed. He gave so much of himself to this world and he won‘t be forgotten. 3y
CaitlinByTheBook @ljuliel and I‘m so sorry about your friend. I hope we continue to see the stigma being removed from mental health topics so we can help each other more. 3y
ljuliel I didn‘t know about his other health problems. That may have been the final straw. I don‘t think he would have wanted to go out of life that way. He will definitely be remembered. He really was a comedy genius and one of a kind. (edited) 3y

A gut wrenching account of the life, trials and tribulations, and subsequent suicides of a one in a million American treasure. Williams is one of the greatest geniuses of our time and his light burned fast and furious, sputtered and was capped all too soon. This still is from What Dreams May Come, which destroyed me after his death, and is based on the Richard Matheson novel of the same name.

Ugh, ugly crying all over again. What a lonely life Williams led at the very end of his life, struggling with depression and an absentee wife who doesn't seem to given enough attention to a severely ill person. My heart hurts. Williams was the first celebrity death to make me cry, but Chris Cornell was only the second.

JenlovesJT47 You can see the sadness in his eyes, when watching his movies. Sometimes the funniest people are the saddest — they want to make people feel good and laugh because they don‘t want others to feel the way they do. So sad! 😭❤️ 3y
IamIamIam @JenlovesJT47 Apparently he was crazy shy and always worried about what other people thought of him. He couldn't accept what Parkinson's would be taking away from him and that's the hardest thing to hear, especially after knowing how hard Michael J. Fox has struggled for the acceptance of the disease. 3y
IamIamIam @JenlovesJT47 One of the people quoted in the book said his was a really big mind to be left alone in. 😞 3y

tpixie That‘s sad to hear about his wife 3y
IamIamIam @tpixie It was very disappointing. It was his 3rd marriage and she seemed so disconnected. He made an effort to keep amicable relationships with both his ex wives and children and they all grew up fairly close knit. His last wife seemed removed and allowed him to travel alone, clearly being in pain and degenerating before her eyes. She then contested his will! I hate to say that their marriage seemed like a cash grab on her part. 3y

I adore Robin Williams and many of his movies are some of my all-time favorites. This book gives the reader a very in-depth look at Robin's life from birth through death. The author doesn't shy away from the darkness in Robin's life and I really appreciated that. Great read for fans of his works. Although it isn't an easy read, it is worth it.

As a lifelong fan of Robin Williams, I needed this book.

This book serves to remind the reader of the wonderful, loving man Robin Williams was. He had his problems, he had his hang ups, and all of that is okay. He was a ray of sunshine, and it‘s taken me a long time to be able to even watch his movies again, because they just remind me of how missed he is (and that‘s just by his fans - his family has us all surpassed).

GingerAntics I think I‘m ready to explore those movies now. I need the laughs, and his sunshine. 4y
GingerAntics All the details and things I never knew about Robin. This book made me laugh, it made me cry, it reminded me how much I loved him. There is so much about this book to love. The ending was and wasn‘t what I expected. I didn‘t know I was going to dislike his third wife and somehow I never knew about the final coroner‘s report. 4y
GingerAntics I loved Robin Williams growing up. I loved most (if not all) of his roles, even the ones the critics hated. He may be why I actually decided not to listen to critics anymore. I love Robin Williams today. He did what we all should hope to do with our lives, leave people just a little happier, just a little better than we found them. He did that a million times over. #daveitzkoff #robin #robinwilliams 4y

Robin at Juilliard, rehearsing for a production of A Midsummer Night‘s Dream.
Why do I feel like he‘s a sort of perpetual Puck (aptly, also named Robin)? I can‘t imagine how amazing it would have been to see him do Shakespeare. It would have been brilliant!!!

Graywacke Awesome picture. (Brings a new perspective to Dead Poet‘s Society.) 4y
GingerAntics @Graywacke I think a lot of people said that was the movie where Robin was most Robin (at least up to that point). I really need to see that movie. He did a lot of Shakespeare, which is really interesting. 4y
Graywacke @GingerAntics hmm. He is calm in it, and I always imagine him animated. But he is really good in the film. My daughter said she watched it because it was on Netflex, she was bored and she wanted to know how terrible it was - and then really enjoyed it!! So she got us all to watch it with her recently. 4y

Graywacke @GingerAntics it would have been something to see him perform some of these Shakespeare roles. 4y
GingerAntics @Graywacke I‘ll have to check Netflix. I know I checked Hulu for his roles, but maybe I didn‘t check Netflix. I would love to see it. 4y
readinginthedark Definitely watch it! I love almost all of Robin's movies, but Dead Poets' Society will always hold a special place in my heart. If I remember correctly, it's based on a book, but don't quote me on that. 4y
GingerAntics @readinginthedark the movie was first and then they made it a book. I already checked on that. I checked Netflix and they have Good Will Hunting now (another of my favorites of his) but no more dead poets society. Hulu doesn‘t have it either. I definitely need to see this thing. May have to go to Vudu at the end of the month. 4y
readinginthedark Interesting! I always find books after movies to be strange. It doesn't translate well that way, I feel, but I haven't read this one, so 🤷‍♀️ 4y
GingerAntics @readinginthedark for some reason is does feel like it should be a movie based on a book. I went looking, but the only thing I found was the novelisation. It did have good ratings in Apple Books, though. Maybe they‘ve done a fairly good job on it, then. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y

GingerAntics @jenniferajanes it‘s even more complicated than Parkinson‘s. He really wasn‘t in his right mind. Poor guy. Freespirit I actually didn‘t realise he‘d been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia. 4y
GingerAntics @Freespirit most people aren‘t. There were conspiracy theories when he died, of course. Then the coroner‘s report came out a few months later. It was only diagnosed after his death and it didn‘t really make headlines. It wasn‘t Parkinson‘s at all. It was actually worse because it increased the risk for suicide in a way Parkinson‘s did/does not. (edited) 4y

GingerAntics @Freespirit right? Apparently he kept asking his buddy Billy Crystal “when did Mohammad Ali get bad, when did he stop talking.” He was sizing up his situation. He saw Ali go. readinginthedark It's interesting how many actors and actresses suffer from mental health issues and anxieties like this. You don't realize it until you read a memoir or biography, I guess. 4y
GingerAntics @readinginthedark I think maybe they become actors/actresses because they enjoy not being themselves for a while, and it turns out their good at it. GingerAntics @readinginthedark not going to lie...Robin Williams still is my escapism. I just adore him. 4y
readinginthedark I agree. Just an amazing man and talent. 4y
