Watchmen (School & Library)
Watchmen (School & Library) | Alan Moore
It all begins with the paranoid delusions of a half-insane hero called Rorschach--but is he really insane or has he, in fact, uncovered a plot to murder super-heroes and possibly millions of innocent civilians? Following two generations of masked super-heroes from the close of World War II to the icy shadow of the Cold War comes this groundbreaking comic story--the story of The Watchmen.

This showed up in #PrimeReading probably because of the new HBO series I haven't seen. It's a gritty, graphic, harsh commentary on humanity and society. Oddly enough, I feel a little better about the current state of affairs, since it isn't nearly as bad by comparison. Could be a helluva lot worse. Still a sobering read. Also, I found Rorchsach less endearing this time than I did when I saw the movie years ago.

#VirtualMountTBR2020

SleepyDragon I didn't love the way the characters were drawn, but the artwork truly captures the sad state of humanity and it's deplorable underbelly. 1d

Yay! Clean slate! Please excuse my absence of late. I've spent the last month contemplating my reading journey for 2020, and looking back over last year's journey. I hope to post a little about my reading goals for this year while looking back at what I did and didn't accomplish last year. Spent some time going back over my journal this week compiling stats and reflecting. Also hope to catch up on some reviews soon. 🙂 (Tagged current read.)

My total time for today and Friday. I finished reading Watchmen, which was enjoyable. I haven't read any superhero comics so my experience is only based off superhero movies, but this was quite different from the typical superhero stuff but the violence was too much at times. Other than that i finished a major chunk of Americanah and started Norse Mythology today.

My son and daughter convinced me to read this book before I watched the HBO series. I had already watched the movie, so I had some backstory. I read comics as a kid, this is my first graphic novel. I really can appreciate the combination of art and dialog. The author‘s comments on politics culture are great. There is a story within a story....in the background you often see a guy reading a comic book about pirates- wild

Is it too late to particpate in this readathon. I wanted to do particpate since i've started books but have procrastinating on my reading. Hoping this will help me make some progress. I'm currently reading Watchmen and Americanah and will be starting Norse Mythology

The HBO series inspired me to re-read this again. (That show is bonkers, but I'm loving it.) Usually, I prefer graphic novels in print, but I've been enjoying this one on Hoopla. Reading it by pane really gives me an appreciation for Dave Gibbons' artwork.⠀

I read this #GraphicNovel for #Booked2019 and because it‘s on the list of #1001books but I didn‘t fell for the genre. For me, looking at pictures is way more difficult than to just read, all those images soon dazzle me. And then it is about superheroes... in which I‘m not interested at all. However, I was intrigued and it kept me reading on. Never again though 🤪

ValerieAndBooks I actually got this recently only because it‘s #1001Books. I‘ll probably start it sooner rather than later because it should be a faster read than the many books with 500+ pages on the list 🤪 4mo
BarbaraBB @ValerieAndBooks Well, it actually took me surprisingly long 😬😀 4mo

vivastory What are your feelings on the upcoming HBO adaptation? 7mo
madamereadsalot1 @vivastory I'm interested. From the teaser it looks like it's going to try to shape it to feel current, which I think could be good. The comic is phenomenal in the story and in it's influence, and I think it has more it can give. I know a lot of folk didn't like the movie, but I liked it. So I don't think the TV show will disappoint me. You? 7mo
vivastory I'm really looking forward to it. I read the original, but none of the sequels or spin-offs, so I don't know how much will be from the original. I've heard that it's going to be an original take incorporating stories from all of them, which is pretty exciting. I think it definitely feels relevant now. I agree about the movie, too. I thought it was better than a lot of people gave it credit for. It was criticized for having several one dimensional 7mo
vivastory characters, but I feel like the same is true for the graphic novel. The strength of the story isn't really the characters (except for maybe Rorschach) but it's cultural & political commentary 7mo
madamereadsalot1 @vivastory same! I've only read the originals too. And definitely agree it isn't so much about the characters, it's about what they represent, or perhaps, what they DON'T represent. It was definitely cutting edge and out of the box for the time. It was, in my opinion, when comics took a turn for the better. Miller's Dark Knight Returns came out around then and it too made Batman darker and more "broken".... better. I prefer my heros conflicted. 7mo

1. Doctor Manhattan
2. 😡
3. Quantum mechanics fascinates me, but Dr. Manhattan‘s character is so nihilistic, so cold, so removed and so egotistically still human, I roll my eyes at him every time I reread. Even less lovable than Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. Heroes set aside their own agendas, Doctor Manhattan chooses to disengage. What bought him in the first place!? brain

I have so many thoughts about this graphic novel but not sure if I have the right one just yet. There‘s no real hero in a book full of supposed heroes and I admire the realism that the author brings in the characters — the flaws, the raw humanity... I can‘t do it justice on my first reading of all twelve chapters but hoping to revisit it in the future in the hopes of picking up anything I missed.

I totally recommend this graphic novel!

Look at yourself— angry, shouting... if you‘d only relax enough to see the whole continuum, life‘s pattern or lack of one, then you‘d understand my perspective. You‘re deliberately shutting out understanding, as if you‘re afraid; as if you‘re too delicate... I think you‘re avoiding something.”

This book is, to put it simply, a masterpiece. Incredibly powerful, discursive and entertaining to boot. It challenged me intellectually and rocked me dramatically. The work doesn‘t seem cliched despite having come out in the eighties, and with its extreme influence it has had on the genre, but rather quite the opposite. It‘s different. It‘s original. Here is no kind of regular arc that we find so commonly in the superhero movies of today.

Riveting and brutal, both visually and emotionally. Still useful and relevant as allegory, maybe even more so now that when it was first released. Besides all that it's just a damned good book. Pure genius in concept and execution.

Watchmen is as good as the hype. It absolutely redefined the genre of the graphic novel. All of the characters are fractured pieces of a larger whole that can never cohere because of human cruelty.

*RE-READ*

“...and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout ‘save us!‘...and I‘ll look down and whisper ‘No.‘”

Oh my gosh, this book! Set in an alternate reality in 1985 (Nixon serving a third term!?), this graphic novel tackles what it truly means to be human. What does morality actually mean? Can you really do the right thing by doing the wrong thing? I love this more now than the first time I read it!
