Watchmen | Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons
A "New York Times" Best Seller! Considered the greatest graphic novel in the history of the medium, the Hugo Award-winning story chronicles the fall from grace of a group of super-heroes plagued by all-too-human failings. Along the way, the concept of the super-hero is dissected as the heroes are stalked by an unknown assassin. This edition of WATCHMEN, the groundbreaking series from Alan Moore, the award-winning writer of V FOR VENDETTA and BATMN: THE KILLING JOKE, and Dave Gibbons, the artist of GREEN LANTERN, features the high-quality, recolored pages found in WATCHMEN: THE ABSOLUTE EDITION with sketches, never-before-seen extra bonus materials and a new introduction by Dave Gibbons.

WHOOOOO is awesome? @JoScho is! 😀 Owl always appreciate her #ManicMonday posts! 🦉

📖 - “Watchmen” (One of the main characters is code named “Nite Owl” 🦉)

🎥 - “Labyrinth” (I suspect this and Harry Potter will be very popular choices today! 😂)

🎶 - “The Crow, The Owl, and the Dove” by Nightwish (as an aside, symphonic metal bands like Nightwish make a great soundtrack for fantasy novels! 🤘)

JoScho 😂 love it! Thanks for playing Dave 🦉🖤 1mo

vivastory What are your feelings on the upcoming HBO adaptation? 2mo
madamereadsalot1 @vivastory I'm interested. From the teaser it looks like it's going to try to shape it to feel current, which I think could be good. The comic is phenomenal in the story and in it's influence, and I think it has more it can give. I know a lot of folk didn't like the movie, but I liked it. So I don't think the TV show will disappoint me. You? 2mo
vivastory I'm really looking forward to it. I read the original, but none of the sequels or spin-offs, so I don't know how much will be from the original. I've heard that it's going to be an original take incorporating stories from all of them, which is pretty exciting. I think it definitely feels relevant now. I agree about the movie, too. I thought it was better than a lot of people gave it credit for. It was criticized for having several one dimensional 2mo
vivastory characters, but I feel like the same is true for the graphic novel. The strength of the story isn't really the characters (except for maybe Rorschach) but it's cultural & political commentary 2mo
madamereadsalot1 @vivastory same! I've only read the originals too. And definitely agree it isn't so much about the characters, it's about what they represent, or perhaps, what they DON'T represent. It was definitely cutting edge and out of the box for the time. It was, in my opinion, when comics took a turn for the better. Miller's Dark Knight Returns came out around then and it too made Batman darker and more "broken".... better. I prefer my heros conflicted. 2mo

The #Summer quarter of #Booked2019 is a real challenge for me since I never read graphic novels or middle grade but for now I have these six beauties lined up! Looking forward to all of them, although they may change of course!

MicheleinPhilly I have somehow already filled 3 prompts for this. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Middle grade is going to be tough although I can likely knock it out in an hour. I think. I don‘t even know what counts as middle grade. 2mo
youneverarrived The Fault in Our Stars is a great choice. 2mo
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly Neither do I, but I guess The Fault in Our Stars Will do. I saw the movie so am prepared for its sadness! 😢 2mo

Cinfhen @MicheleinPhilly I can easily recommend Jaclyn Woodson or Jason Reynolds for #MiddleGrade both books phenomenal and I listened to the audio for this one 👉🏾 2mo
Cinfhen Excited to see #Summer picks going up!!! ☀️ 2mo
monalyisha I'd also be happy to recommend some Middle Grade! Tagging a book I read for the Rhode Island Middle School Book Award & unexpectedly LOVED. (I think “The Fault in Our Stars“ is more straight-up YA/Teen but I'm sure no one's enforcing super-strict guidelines ;) ). 2mo
BarbaraBB @monalyisha Neither am I. I thought it would more or less be the same 😊 2mo
MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen I love Woodson! Don‘t know why I hadn‘t thought of her before. Thanks love! 2mo
emilyhaldi My husband made me read Watchmen when we first started dating and I admit I was not thrilled to comply... But totally loved it! In fact, may reread it for the booked challenge too 😊 2mo
emilyhaldi Thanks for the recs! @Cinfhen I was stumped by middle grade but am excited to give this one a try 2mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage I actually like middle grade more than YA, but I can‘t articulate the exact reason. Here‘s one I loved 2mo
Taylor Watchmen is really good! 2mo
Reggie All the Rivers!!!! So good!!! 2mo
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi @Taylor That is really good to know ‘cause it doesn‘t appeal to me at all 😀. It‘s on the list of #1001books though! 2mo
BarbaraBB @Reggie I am looking forward to that one! 2mo
Cinfhen The Woodson & The Reynolds we‘re both excellent @emilyhaldi I think I may have preferred Jason Reynolds. His voice is really soothing and super sexy 😜💕 2mo
Liz_M @BarbaraBB If you can't find our don't enjoy Watchman, the tagged is also excellent. 2mo

1. Doctor Manhattan
2. 😡
3. Quantum mechanics fascinates me, but Dr. Manhattan‘s character is so nihilistic, so cold, so removed and so egotistically still human, I roll my eyes at him every time I reread. Even less lovable than Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. Heroes set aside their own agendas, Doctor Manhattan chooses to disengage. What bought him in the first place!? brain

julesG Thanks for the tag! 2mo

I have so many thoughts about this graphic novel but not sure if I have the right one just yet. There‘s no real hero in a book full of supposed heroes and I admire the realism that the author brings in the characters — the flaws, the raw humanity... I can‘t do it justice on my first reading of all twelve chapters but hoping to revisit it in the future in the hopes of picking up anything I missed.

I totally recommend this graphic novel!

Look at yourself— angry, shouting... if you‘d only relax enough to see the whole continuum, life‘s pattern or lack of one, then you‘d understand my perspective. You‘re deliberately shutting out understanding, as if you‘re afraid; as if you‘re too delicate... I think you‘re avoiding something.”

This book is, to put it simply, a masterpiece. Incredibly powerful, discursive and entertaining to boot. It challenged me intellectually and rocked me dramatically. The work doesn‘t seem cliched despite having come out in the eighties, and with its extreme influence it has had on the genre, but rather quite the opposite. It‘s different. It‘s original. Here is no kind of regular arc that we find so commonly in the superhero movies of today.

Riveting and brutal, both visually and emotionally. Still useful and relevant as allegory, maybe even more so now that when it was first released. Besides all that it's just a damned good book. Pure genius in concept and execution.

Watchmen is as good as the hype. It absolutely redefined the genre of the graphic novel. All of the characters are fractured pieces of a larger whole that can never cohere because of human cruelty.

*RE-READ*

“...and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout ‘save us!‘...and I‘ll look down and whisper ‘No.‘”

Oh my gosh, this book! Set in an alternate reality in 1985 (Nixon serving a third term!?), this graphic novel tackles what it truly means to be human. What does morality actually mean? Can you really do the right thing by doing the wrong thing? I love this more now than the first time I read it!

I definitely was not expecting this to be as dark or as thought provoking as it was. Perhaps not being one that‘s had much exposure to comics, my expectations of superhero comics are a little Disneyfied or overly romantic.Watchmen is not light reading. Lots of trigger warnings; many horrible things happen. It does, however, provide interesting perspectives and questions important topics especially for the era during which it was published. #lennox

Alan Moore is one of the greatest graphic novel writers. Set in 1985 during Nixon's third term, costumed vigilantes have been outlawed by the 1977 Keene Act. Only the Comedian & Dr. Manhattan are allowed to continue working as government employees, both embody the government's unethical tactics & immeasurable destructive capabilities. Moore's book seamlessly blends several styles: murder mystery, alternate history, philosophy, powerful social 👇
