Watchmen | Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons
A "New York Times" Best Seller! Considered the greatest graphic novel in the history of the medium, the Hugo Award-winning story chronicles the fall from grace of a group of super-heroes plagued by all-too-human failings. Along the way, the concept of the super-hero is dissected as the heroes are stalked by an unknown assassin. This edition of WATCHMEN, the groundbreaking series from Alan Moore, the award-winning writer of V FOR VENDETTA and BATMN: THE KILLING JOKE, and Dave Gibbons, the artist of GREEN LANTERN, features the high-quality, recolored pages found in WATCHMEN: THE ABSOLUTE EDITION with sketches, never-before-seen extra bonus materials and a new introduction by Dave Gibbons.

The classic graphic novel providing a darker take on the superhero genre through the lens of political and nuclear turmoil.

1st time round, I wasn‘t ready for the “deconstructed” superhero novel. Since it was released, & now I‘ve just reread it, I think The Boys & Kickass made the concept more enjoyable. It starts compelling & has some interesting parts (I support Moore‘s politics) but it sags in the middle & loses its way until Moore pulls it back with the climax. His characters are interesting & the art is great but the backstory segments between parts are often dull

breadnroses Been wanting to reread this for a minute! This might inspire me to go for it next lol :) 3mo
The_Book_Ninja I see there‘s lots of subsequent cash-ins….don‘t know if I fancy them🤷🏻 3mo

Very dark and definitely not for the faint hearted. I loved the variety of characters and their dark, twisted ideologies and backstories. The overall plot was mysterious and fun, with fighting and flsshbacks, it was an exciting story even until the end, when the revelations and 'villain' is revealed. I think my favourite character was Rorschach, I loved the prison part.

Vansa Some of Moore's views in this comic are....fascist, though. 9mo

This one had been sitting on my shelf for years, waiting for me to have enough time and dedication to start reading. I truly wish I had done it sooner. An intricate plot with very little filler, complex characters, and decent art - it‘s all there. Time to rewatch the movie and the HBO show.

Watchmen opens with the death of the Comedian. The graphic novel then unfolds the truth behind his death. A notable scene sees some of his former Minutemen team members gathering at his grave for the funeral.

It‘s strange to revisit this. I am in a reading slump , too many books too little time , not finishing much. I read this in the olden days have never watched the movie. A little graphic storytelling usually gets me going again. It‘s amazing, it doesn‘t seem as dark as I remember maybe it has something to do with how things are now.Who watches the Watchmen?

Branwen I love this graphic novel! 😀 3y
Bookwomble I've read this a dozen times and it never fails to capture me. The film is an excellent adaptation, the casting superb, and faithful to a high degree. Some changes and cuts made, as necessary to a different medium. I'd recommend it 🙂 I hope your reading slump passes soon 💗📚💗 3y
Leftcoastzen @Bookwomble Thanks ! I will get to the film soon . I was always afraid it would stray too far from the original material , thanks for easing my fears ! 😀 3y

I‘m not a big comic reader, if I do my preference is toward a completed story graphic novel format. This is my small collection. My first intro to the genre was Watchmen, so unfortunately most of my subsequent reads have paled in comparison. The only series that has come close for me is Saga, but I wish the series would finish up for resolution.

TiredLibrarian I'm the same. If you like Alan Moore, try this one - it's pretty long for this format but very good (it's my favorite). 3y

Don't get me wrong - I enjoyed this book, but I struggled to grow an attachment to any of the characters, their motives and beliefs were lost on me and I just never managed to really support any of them.
On the other hand, it was a pleasant surprise to have a 'superhero' story without the cliched happy ending. The story itself was gritty and engaging.
Overall a good book, but I don't think I was the right person for the book.

ElleSkel I felt the same way about this. I did however love the TV series which has a unique take on the GN. (edited) 3y

AshleyHoss820 @TCLinrow I know it‘s not to everyone‘s liking, it‘s a bit dark and gory, but that‘s kinda my jam...🤣 I‘m a caustic, cynical thing! Moore has written something that is quite timeless, in my ever-so-humble opinion! I hope you enjoy it!! (If you don‘t, that‘s okay too!😊) 3y

Bought this one a while back for #1001Books list. Younger son read it and adopted it (his quilt made by my mom, for him). I had to search for it in his room. He wanted me to read it before he left for college so we could discuss. It‘s a clever take on the superheroes concept and has meta storylines. Hence the pick, although I‘m really not a reader of this type of graphic novel as my son is.

BarbaraBB Wow a pick! I had a hard time finishing it! 4y
Jess I love that you have a little book club with your son. Fantastic. 4y
ValerieAndBooks @BarbaraBB I admit it was more gore than I‘d like, and maybe wouldn‘t have liked it as much if I didn‘t have someone to discuss it with! 4y

HBO and Damon Lindelof absolutely knocked it out of the park with their Watchmen series. If you haven't read the graphic novel, what's wrong with you! But if you have, this is essential viewing.

vivastory I'm a bit reluctant to watch it as I heard that the show runner left & it's uncertain if there will be a second season 4y
JacqMac The hubby and I loved it. I also heard that there won‘t be a second season @vivastory but I think it ended in a good place. 4y
TieDyeDude @vivastory I don't think he left, I believe he was just satisfied with the story and at this point don't feel the need for a second season. It was a complete story. But of course, if it was successful enough, they'll find a way to keep it going. 4y

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego This series was really good, but I had to watch some YouTube videos to put it all together. We rewatched the 2009 movie after also. And now I must read the graphic novel! I'm a little backwards on this one. Lol. 4y
TieDyeDude @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego The series was more a continuation of the graphic novel. The movie was a fairly faithful adaptation, but the big change was replacing the squid at the end, which was a big part of the series. 4y
vivastory @TieDyeDude @JacqMac Thanks for the info! I'm glad to hear that it was a self-sufficient story and didn't end on a cliffhanger. I will definitely add it to the list of shows to watch when I renew my subscription in a couple of weeks. 4y

This showed up in #PrimeReading probably because of the new HBO series I haven't seen. It's a gritty, graphic, harsh commentary on humanity and society. Oddly enough, I feel a little better about the current state of affairs, since it isn't nearly as bad by comparison. Could be a helluva lot worse. Still a sobering read. Also, I found Rorchsach less endearing this time than I did when I saw the movie years ago.

#VirtualMountTBR2020

SleepyDragon I didn't love the way the characters were drawn, but the artwork truly captures the sad state of humanity and it's deplorable underbelly. 4y

I really can appreciate the combination of art and dialog. The author‘s comments on politics culture are great. I read this #GraphicNovel for #Booked2019 and because it‘s on the list of #1001books but I didn‘t fell for the genre. For me, looking at pictures is way more difficult than to just read, all those images soon dazzle me. And then it is about superheroes... in which I‘m not interested at all. However, I was intrigued and it kept me reading on. Never again though 🤪

ValerieAndBooks I actually got this recently only because it‘s #1001Books. I‘ll probably start it sooner rather than later because it should be a faster read than the many books with 500+ pages on the list 🤪 5y

vivastory What are your feelings on the upcoming HBO adaptation? 5y
madamereadsalot1 @vivastory I'm interested. From the teaser it looks like it's going to try to shape it to feel current, which I think could be good. The comic is phenomenal in the story and in it's influence, and I think it has more it can give. I know a lot of folk didn't like the movie, but I liked it. So I don't think the TV show will disappoint me. You? 5y
vivastory I'm really looking forward to it. I read the original, but none of the sequels or spin-offs, so I don't know how much will be from the original. I've heard that it's going to be an original take incorporating stories from all of them, which is pretty exciting. I think it definitely feels relevant now. I agree about the movie, too. I thought it was better than a lot of people gave it credit for. It was criticized for having several one dimensional 5y
vivastory characters, but I feel like the same is true for the graphic novel. The strength of the story isn't really the characters (except for maybe Rorschach) but it's cultural & political commentary 5y
madamereadsalot1 @vivastory same! I've only read the originals too. And definitely agree it isn't so much about the characters, it's about what they represent, or perhaps, what they DON'T represent. It was definitely cutting edge and out of the box for the time. It was, in my opinion, when comics took a turn for the better. Miller's Dark Knight Returns came out around then and it too made Batman darker and more "broken".... better. I prefer my heros conflicted. 5y

2. 😡
3. Quantum mechanics fascinates me, but Dr. Manhattan‘s character is so nihilistic, so cold, so removed and so egotistically still human, I roll my eyes at him every time I reread. I have so many thoughts about this graphic novel but not sure if I have the right one just yet. There‘s no real hero in a book full of supposed heroes and I admire the realism that the author brings in the characters — the flaws, the raw humanity... I can‘t do it justice on my first reading of all twelve chapters but hoping to revisit it in the future in the hopes of picking up anything I missed.

I totally recommend this graphic novel!
