I am trying to catch up posting my April books. In April I concentrated on environmental / ecology fiction/ non fiction. I picked this up as a middle grade fiction rec. It is for kids written in the 1950's. Keeping that in mind an adult reader can suspend reality and enjoy it for its magic and creativity. A young budding naturalist/survivalist leaves home to live in the woods for a year. I really enjoyed it. It was fun. 4 stars.

I could see this being a whole class read.

I think this is a great book for children to learn courage and independence.

Okay, I‘m awake again.

1. Really good. I got through most of my library pile and a bit more besides, and I logged 12 hours of reading time!

2. I went in with loose goals this time.

3. Cheese popcorn!

4. I feel like I stacked a couple things, but I don‘t remember if they were from Readathon participants.

5. I loved revisiting the tagged book for the first time since I was 11! It‘s gonna stay in my permanent collection.

I ended up diving back into MSotM, and I‘m really feeling it now. I‘ve said before that I signed up for a forest week in Grade 7 because of Nynaeve, but Sam was also a huge influence there. This book got me into so many nature-centric things.

Like peregrine falcons! A few live around here, and I‘m always excited to see them. This summer, one actually flew THROUGH my gazebo while I was sitting in it. It was awesome. #deweyoct #readathon

I‘m at 1:50 for #deweyoct after another volume of IF I COULD REACH YOU and a bit more of MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. I figure I‘ll dip into the book here and there throughout the day instead of reading it straight through, which is also how it went when I first read it at age 11. #readathon

Oh my gosh, this weekend just went completely sideways! Nothing bad, exactly, just lots of small aggravations adding up to demolish any thought of spare time. ANYWAY despite having a lot of hours to work this week, I'm super excited about #LitsySummerCamp !!
1. I'll admit I'm a cabin girl, but it's mainly because I ALWAYS have to pee in the middle of the night & if I'm in a tent, it means I have to go out where the bears are! No thank you! 😂 ⬇

1. I reread books a LOT. It's my comfort thing to do, revisiting characters & plots I already know that I love. Often, that's what gets me out of a reading slump.
2. Sometimes - it definitely catches my eye. I also hate reading books with weird and/or half-naked people on them. 😆

Delightful, if unlikely, story of a teenager who runs off to live on his grandfather's land in the Catskills. Surviving in the wilderness is remarkably easy in this novel, as is training a falcon, and I wonder why Jean Craighead George made the main character a boy, but it was still a pleasure to spend a year in the woods with Sam and Frightful.

It's almost impossible for me to choose THE influential book, the one that's changed my life & turned me into the person I am today because there are SO MANY. I learned out to read when I was 3 & don't remember a time in my life when books weren't critically important to me - Mom says even as a toddler I used to go to bed with my stuffed bear & a pile of board books!

But the tagged book united my love for reading ⬇

1. I actually did a bunch of rereads this year, and loved them all. The tagged book was a childhood favorite that I hadn't read in 20 years or so - it held up extremely well.
2. I've read some really enjoyable books this month, but I think Winter Holiday (by Arthur Ransome) is my favorite. I am really, really loving the Swallows & Amazon books!

My side of the Mountain, awarded the Newberry Medal, is an adventurous fiction book that narrated and described through journal entries of young Sam who runs away from home to live in the woods. Sam lives in his grandfather‘s old treehouse for over a year. #ucflae3414f19

This was a favorite of mine as a kid - I loved stories about people who lived off the land. It's still a dream of mine!! George does a great job adding sketches and useful information that made me feel like I could survive just like Sam. It was really fun to reread this one, and there are apparently two sequels I've never read, so I will be hitting those soon!

Ships don‘t often sail@near mountains, so I used GoodReads to find some for me. I came across this book title which sounded familiar to me, though, I have not read it. It appears to be quite the wilderness trilogy.

First book down for #24B4Monday and so far I‘m happy with my time.

Sam runs away to live off the land. A year of hunting and gathering, accompanied by his faithful falcon and surrounded by interesting animal neighbors, lets him connect with nature and see the world differently.

I read one of the sequels as a kid, but this is my first time foe this one. Not bad.

My stack for #24B4Monday - tagged book has about 40 pages to finish (or less), the Lori Foster and Lauren Dane are probably either/or; Finishing School #4 is highest priority; and the graphic novels are palate cleansers or when I feel like I need some momentum. Let‘s do this!

I loved this book as a child. It really captured my young imagination and I fantasized for years about running away and living on my own in the mountains.

I loved Julie of the Wolves as a kid. Can‘t believe I didn‘t read this one back then too. I had my own fantasies of running away & living in the wilderness as a kid. When Sam Gribley tires of living with his parents & 8 siblings in their cramped NYC apartment, he decides to run away to the Catskill Mountains & live off the land. The details of his survival & fellowship with nature are fantastic!

I‘m trying to get out of a slump and @TheBookHippie recommended I try a well loved middle grade. Well I can‘t remember if I read this in 4th or 6th grade but now I remember where I got the dream of running away and living in the woods. Haven‘t lost that! Between this and a Greg Iles on audio I‘m feeling better about reading life!

Today‘s prompt #wilderness immediately made me think of My Side of the Mountain that I read in grade school. I always wanted a falcon after reading this book! #readingresolutions

I'm a substitute teacher and I LOVE pulling a worn, school copy of a book off of a shelf and reading between tasks. Today it was My Side of the Mountain and JCG knows what she's taking about here in the forward. I read about 11 pages and I'm going to DL it to my kindle to keep going.

A few years ago, my then-30-year-old sister wrote Jean Craighead George a letter telling her how much reading this book meant to her as a child. The handwritten (!!!) letter she got back in return is one of her most prized possessions.
