I am trying to catch up posting my April books. In April I concentrated on environmental / ecology fiction/ non fiction. I picked this up as a middle grade fiction rec. It is for kids written in the 1950's. Keeping that in mind an adult reader can suspend reality and enjoy it for its magic and creativity. A young budding naturalist/survivalist leaves home to live in the woods for a year. I really enjoyed it. It was fun. 4 stars.

Prairiegirl_reading I loved this as a kid. I‘ve had this idea that I want to run away and live in a tree ever since. I never could actually do it, am much too much of a delicate flower lol!! 12mo

Okay, I‘m awake again.

1. Really good. I got through most of my library pile and a bit more besides, and I logged 12 hours of reading time!

2. I went in with loose goals this time.

3. Cheese popcorn!

4. I feel like I stacked a couple things, but I don‘t remember if they were from Readathon participants.

5. I loved revisiting the tagged book for the first time since I was 11! It‘s gonna stay in my permanent collection.

I ended up diving back into MSotM, and I‘m really feeling it now. I‘ve said before that I signed up for a forest week in Grade 7 because of Nynaeve, but Sam was also a huge influence there. This book got me into so many nature-centric things.

Like peregrine falcons! A few live around here, and I‘m always excited to see them. This summer, one actually flew THROUGH my gazebo while I was sitting in it. It was awesome. #deweyoct #readathon

mandarchy Oh wow! That's really exciting. I had one eat a pigeon in my tree once. I am glad yours was just flying.
2y
xicanti @mandarchy it landed on the lawn and my yard was immediately empty of all the usual sparrows, squirrels, and rabbits. Nobody wanted to get eaten. 2y

I‘m at 1:50 for #deweyoct after another volume of IF I COULD REACH YOU and a bit more of MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. I figure I‘ll dip into the book here and there throughout the day instead of reading it straight through, which is also how it went when I first read it at age 11. #readathon

Oh my gosh, this weekend just went completely sideways! Nothing bad, exactly, just lots of small aggravations adding up to demolish any thought of spare time. ANYWAY despite having a lot of hours to work this week, I'm super excited about #LitsySummerCamp !!
1. I'll admit I'm a cabin girl, but it's mainly because I ALWAYS have to pee in the middle of the night & if I'm in a tent, it means I have to go out where the bears are! No thank you! 😂 ⬇

TheAromaofBooks 2. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be the name of the camp or my name while I'm at camp??
3. I'm not sure about favorite, but the tagged book is the first one that came to mind. I wanted to live in a tree so hard when I was growing up!!
4. My goal is 250pgs/day BUT I'm not off to a great start! 😂

Thanks for hosting @ImperfectCJ !!
3y
Roary47 You can do it! 💛 3y
peanutnine Oh I love My Side of the Mountain! I forgot about that book, read it in middle school 3y
See All 8 Comments
Singout 1. I“m a tenter, though I got an indulgent air mattress last year. Eight years into a disabling illness, and I miss canoe tripping ^so^ much, although kind friends have helped me car camp.
2. Orion (Kinda weird when Orion doesn't rise till it gets chilly, but whatever.)
3. Braiding Sweetgrass: recommending to everybody everywhere. Never Cry Wolf was a childhood fave, and a bit more “campy“ (so to speak).
4. Not doing the challenge, sorry...
3y
ImperfectCJ I had intended camp name to be your name while at camp, but people are doing it both ways, which I think is pretty cool! I agree, the pee factor is definitely a checkmark in the “cons“ column for tents. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Roary47 - Thank you!!! Hopefully this week will be a little more “regular“ than the weekend was. Reading time ended up being at a premium the last couple of days!! 😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @peanutnine - I reread it last year or the year before & loved it just as much as I did when I was growing up. It still made me want to try to live off the land, preferably inside of a giant tree!!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Singout - We love our canoe, although we have never done any overnighters in it. One of my someday-vacations is to paddle for a few days up in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota!! 3y

Someone tagged me... I can't remember who - but thank you!! 😂
1. I reread books a LOT. It's my comfort thing to do, revisiting characters & plots I already know that I love. Often, that's what gets me out of a reading slump.
2. Sometimes - it definitely catches my eye. I also hate reading books with weird and/or half-naked people on them. 😆
3. This is a childhood favorite that made me want to live in the woods!!

Delightful, if unlikely, story of a teenager who runs off to live on his grandfather's land in the Catskills. Surviving in the wilderness is remarkably easy in this novel, as is training a falcon, and I wonder why Jean Craighead George made the main character a boy, but it was still a pleasure to spend a year in the woods with Sam and Frightful.

TheNeverendingTBR One of the first books I read! 💙 3y
ImperfectCJ @TheNeverendingTBR I've been reading it with my 11-year-old and wondering how it's striking him. I thought for sure I had read it before, but when I started I realized it was completely new to me. (No idea what book I was thinking was this one.) 3y
Nikki_E I loved this book when I was a kid and by some strange turn of events I now live outside of Delhi (where the library in the book is located.) 3y

ImperfectCJ @Nikki_E Very cool! I listened to most of this on audio and then finished on the ebook and was surprised at the spelling/pronunciation of Delhi. 3y
ravenlee If you haven‘t read it, JC George‘s memoir is pretty interesting, about raising her kids among an insane menagerie of critters. 3y
ImperfectCJ @ravenlee ooh! Thanks for the recommendation! I didn't know she had a memoir, and I tend to enjoy author/mom memoirs. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee - I'm going to have to find that one!! My Side of the Mountain was one of my favorites growing up, although I wasn't a very big fan of her other famous book, Julie of the Wolves. 3y
TheAromaofBooks As a side note, if your son enjoyed this one he may also like Jim Kjelgaard's books (Snow Dog & Wild Trek are my favorites). They're all books about boys & dogs & the wilderness & they made me wish I could be a trapper living all alone in my cabin in the Yukon when I was growing up haha They're mostly from the 1950s so there may need to be some discussions about how things have changed, but some of them are great wilderness adventures!! 3y
ravenlee @ImperfectCJ @TheAromaofBooks it‘s really short, and written kind of for the MG audience of her usual books, but it‘s worth an hour or so‘s read. I was struck by how much times have changed, more than anything else. And by how very emphatically I am NOT that kind of mom! 3y
ImperfectCJ @ravenlee Have you read Shirley Jackson's Life Among the Savages and/or Raising Demons? I had that same feeling (wow, times have changed) when I read those memoirs, but I really loved them and found them hilarious. (Apologies if I've already recommended them to you...I tend to recommend them to everyone, and I'm sure I double up sometimes.) 3y
ravenlee I have not read either, but I have a really tattered old copy of Life Among the Savages that I‘ve been meaning to get to. 3y

Thanks for the tag @maich!!

It's almost impossible for me to choose THE influential book, the one that's changed my life & turned me into the person I am today because there are SO MANY. I learned out to read when I was 3 & don't remember a time in my life when books weren't critically important to me - Mom says even as a toddler I used to go to bed with my stuffed bear & a pile of board books!

But the tagged book united my love for reading ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) with my love for the outdoors & a fascination with the possibility of living off the land that I've never quite lost. As an adult, I'm still intrigued by homesteading, gardening, & learning new skills. While I never got as far as running away from home (although maybe I would have if our family had had empty property in the Catskill Mountains!) I've always admired Sam's independence & ingenuity! 4y

1. I actually did a bunch of rereads this year, and loved them all. The tagged book was a childhood favorite that I hadn't read in 20 years or so - it held up extremely well.
2. I've read some really enjoyable books this month, but I think Winter Holiday (by Arthur Ransome) is my favorite. I am really, really loving the Swallows & Amazon books!

LiteraryFeline I do not so a lot of rereading other than some of the books I read with my daughter. It has been such fun seeing her fall in love with some of my old favorites. I haven't read Ransome before. I'll have to check his books out. 4y
nicoleneverendingtbr Dear Alice & Child Called It & Face on the Milk Carton & Nancy Drew. I read this as teen. I was in the mood to relive my childhood. Next year I wanna read Babysitter Club. 4y

My side of the Mountain, awarded the Newberry Medal, is an adventurous fiction book that narrated and described through journal entries of young Sam who runs away from home to live in the woods. Sam lives in his grandfather‘s old treehouse for over a year. #ucflae3414f19

YvetteE During Sam‘s time of escape, he learns to survive in nature and even makes some furry friends along the way, like the ferret and falcon! Sam is faced with times of temperance as he learns important life lessons and gains maturity while he is isolated in his new home. 5y
YvetteE Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships (3.2)
Big ideas can be highlighted using the bubble map included in the lesson plan. The ESOL strategy of using a simple visual organizer will be a way to engage students and highlight key concepts.
Encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts
and seeing relationships
5y
YvetteE https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/my-side-mounta... Students will independently read(IR) and assess contextual information. (edited) 5y
Lrobertson I love the tool for using graphic organizers! I think for students to write their own thoughts, or even have a conversation as a class and do one as a whole, is a great way to students to get their information out and processed. 5y
DrSpalding As you noted, graphic organizers work well to aid comprehension and you used a high-quality resource for this book selection. What genre? 4y

This was a favorite of mine as a kid - I loved stories about people who lived off the land. It's still a dream of mine!! George does a great job adding sketches and useful information that made me feel like I could survive just like Sam. It was really fun to reread this one, and there are apparently two sequels I've never read, so I will be hitting those soon!

SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime i absolutely loveddd this book when i was a kid! 💙💚 5y
TheAromaofBooks @SoManyBooksNotEnoughTime - me too!!! I'm interested to see if the sequels are any good. I reread this one dozens of times growing up, along with every Jim Kjelgaard book I could get my hands on - he wrote all about people living in the woods with no one but a dog for companionship also haha 5y

First day of school today! Here are some of the new books that we just got class sets of. What should I definitely read with my classes this year? Top 5: 7th grade. Bottom 5: 8th grade. #teachersofLitsy

RainyDayReading Not a big fan of the author, but Enders Game had my classmates and I hooked when we read it in High School. Even the kids that usually didn‘t read were invested in it and reading ahead of the teacher. Only other one I‘ve read in that stack is The Westing Game and I honestly don‘t remember much about it 😅 5y
tjwill @RainyDayReading I didn‘t know anything about the author when I first read it when I taught 9th grade, and I am definitely not a fan of him either. I did love the book though, and my students then did too! It‘s good to hear that other students have enjoyed it too. 5y
RainyDayReading @tjwill I didn‘t know anything about him either until years after I read the book. So I try desperately to separate the two since I truly did enjoy the book haha. We also loved And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie but that was also 9th grade, not sure if that would be too much for 7th/8th grade. But it was a hit with us haha. 5y
tjwill @RainyDayReading That‘s a good one! I usually read some Sherlock Holmes with 7th, and they love mysteries! 5y

First book down for #24B4Monday and so far I‘m happy with my time.

Sam runs away to live off the land. A year of hunting and gathering, accompanied by his faithful falcon and surrounded by interesting animal neighbors, lets him connect with nature and see the world differently.

I read one of the sequels as a kid, but this is my first time foe this one. Not bad.
