Caraval: the mesmerising Sunday Times bestseller
Caraval: the mesmerising Sunday Times bestseller | Stephanie Garber
'If you ever wondered how it would feel to step into a living dream, here's your ticket' - Stacey Lee Welcome to Caraval, where nothing is quite what it seems... Scarlett has never left the tiny isle of Trisda, pining from afar for the wonder of Caraval, a once-a-year week-long performance where the audience participates in the show. Caraval is Magic. Mystery. Adventure. And for Scarlett and her beloved sister Tella it represents freedom and an escape from their ruthless, abusive father. When the sisters' long-awaited invitations to Caraval finally arrive, it seems their dreams have come true. But no sooner have they arrived than Tella vanishes, kidnapped by the show's mastermind organiser, Legend. Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But nonetheless she quickly becomes enmeshed in a dangerous game of love, magic and heartbreak. And real or not, she must find Tella before the game is over, and her sister disappears forever. A magical and stunningly imaginative debut novel for anyone who loved The Night Circus. 'Impressive, original, wondrous' - USA Today 'Spellbinding' - US Weekly 'Magnificent' Publishers Weekly 'The Hunger Games meets The Night Circus' - Entertainment Weekly 'I lost myself in this world' - Sabaa Tahir 'Beautifully written' - Rene Ahdieh 'Shimmers with magic' - Marie Rutkoski

Very reminiscent of The Night Circus which I absolutely adored. For the first 100 pages I wasn't really sure if I was going yo enjoy it and it seemed like it was very slow going.

However towards the end I really started to enjoy it and get into the story and all the twists and turns it started to have. Though at the end it did disappoint a little with how everything was resolved.

August recap in book reviews:

The synopsis of this book had me hooked. It‘s about a magical game held by a very mysterious game master named Legend. The story follows two sisters, Scarlett and Donatella, who wanting to escape their abusive father sends Legend a series of letters. The only thing is Donatella gets kidnapped which sends Scarlett on an adventure to win the game to find her sister.
Contd in comments ⬇️

Rating: 5/5

i.besteph … What follows is a series of mystery, tension and heartbreak (yep there‘s romance 🥰) and a whole lot of clues to solve. I love the world this plot is built on, although it requires a bit more building because there‘s not much context besides a few whereabouts to get accustomed to. But that adds to the charm and enigma in this first book since the game itself is a mystery. The ending was a mind blowing PLOT TWIST! 4w

I enjoyed this more than I was expecting. I‘m really trying to branch out of my comfort zone a little bit this year with genres like fantasy and YA and I‘ve found that the otherworldly world building can really make for a great story, especially as an audiobook with a good narrator. This was a great start to what I‘m imagining will be an epic trilogy and I‘m all in! There are definitely some cliffhangers I need answered! 🌟🌟🌟🌟

A fun read, but I probably won‘t be continuing the series. Another example of being about 3 years behind on my Alaska Battle of the Books reads.

Kimberlone The Night Circus is such a better book than this one 4mo

I still have so many questions-I am super excited to read book 2 in this Trilogy. I absolutely loved the game and all the secrets, I've never read anything like it. And my favorite character thus far is definitely Tella. Although I do have a soft spot for Julian.

Loved it! Alice in Wonderland meets Charlie & the Chocolate Factory vibes! I had no idea what was going on for most of it, yet that‘s what made it so endearing. It will have you questioning everything and everyone! I didn‘t trust a single character, although I had a lot of conspiracy theories (none of them right lol) The last 1/3 of the book easily made this a 5 star read for me! Thanks to @KateReadsYA for buddy reading this w/ me! Now #2?! 🤗😏

KateReadsYA Yes I've never felt like this while reading a book. Like who is who and what's happening is the entire vibe of this book! So excited for us to read book 2. 4mo

As they crossed over the arched bridge and past the massive hourglasses, Scarlett wondered how many minutes of her life it would take to form one bead. A second in Caraval seemed richer than an ordinary second, like that moment on the cusp of sunset, when all the colors of the sky coalesce into magic.

Book 1.
Alice in Wonderland overtones as Scarlett searches through Caraval on a magical isle in search of her sister. No one is to be trusted, even your perception, and things keep changing. But it's all just a game ... or is it?

I loved this book way more than I expected. It was a magical story with a lot of twists and suspense. It‘s about a game that takes players into a fantasy world where they have to find a way to win at the end. I thought this was so well written and imaginative and I just didn‘t want to put it down whenever I picked it up. Can‘t wait to read the second book!

BehindthePages The way Caraval was described was so intricate and creative! Loved this book! 6mo

Still catching up on my #Owlcrate backlog…. This could have been really good, but I struggled to finish it. The pacing was off and as much as I love beautiful writing, it was too much.

I wish the focus would have been more on Scarlett and Tella, instead of the instalove. The fantasy and worldbuilding were lacking in any real consequence and the ending was too tidy. Not sure if I'll pick up the sequel.

I didn‘t really have any feelings about this one, didn‘t hate it, didn‘t love it. It was intriguing, yet uninteresting. I think it was the writing, but I just didn‘t feel anything about this one. I won‘t be reading the sequel. 3⭐️

I went into this enjoying it a lot. Then as the story went on, the purple prose started to annoy me, then the characters themselves and their blandness and overall boringness was hard to get past. I‘ll go for book 2 but if they do not grow as people, I‘m bagging this series.

Book #4: It gave me Alice in Wonderland mixed with some Hunger Games vibes. I liked that it kept some mystery - since this is a trilogy - but I did accidentally see a spoiler when I was looking at fan art. I‘m hoping the second gives us a Tella perspective but I have no idea what‘s to come.

This book was absolutely fantastic. It had one of the most original plots I‘ve ever read and I fell in love with the characters. There was no way I could have predicted all of the twists and turns. I literally cried during multiple points in the book and it‘s not even a very sad book, it was just that insane! Stephanie Garner is a magician!

I finished this was on Monday but haven't had a chance to post. I listened to this one on audio and loved it. I'm a little late to the Caraval bandwagon but finally jumped on board. It's just as good as everyone says! I couldn't imagine if a game like this actually existed. So many twists and turns. So many evil people and events not what you think they are. Wild ride and I'm already listening to book 2.

Q84 I still have to get around to this one myself. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 11/25 ◼️ This one has sat on my book shelf for years....now I wonder what took me so long to to read this. I was transported to a world that was so unique. I felt like I was part of the crazy game. I felt like I was right there with Scarlet as she navigated the twists and turns of a world that was so crazy. That ending left me wanting more and I can‘t wait to continue the story. {continued in comments}

Lollymya The author led readers on a wild goose chase and the craziest and scariest roller coaster possible and the only way off is to complete each task given by Legend. Wow is all that I can say......happy reading!!! #litsylove 2y
