Long Way Down
Long Way Down | Jason Reynolds
An ode to Put the Damn Guns Down, this is National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestseller Jason Reynoldss fiercely stunning novel that takes place in sixty potent secondsthe time it takes a kid to decide whether or not hes going to murder the guy who killed his brother. A cannon. A strap. A piece. A biscuit. A burner. A heater. A chopper. A gat. A hammer A tool for RULE Or, you can call it a gun. Thats what fifteen-year-old Will has shoved in the back waistband of his jeans. See, his brother Shawn was just murdered. And Will knows the rules. No crying. No snitching. Revenge. Thats where Wills now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brothers gun. He gets on the elevator, seventh floor, stoked. He knows who hes after. Or does he? As the elevator stops on the sixth floor, on comes Buck. Buck, Will finds out, is who gave Shawn the gun before Will took the gun. Buck tells Will to check that the gun is even loaded. And thats when Will sees that one bullet is missing. And the only one who could have fired Shawns gun was Shawn. Huh. Will didnt know that Shawn had ever actually USED his gun. Bigger huh. BUCK IS DEAD. But Bucks in the elevator? Just as Wills trying to think this through, the door to the next floor opens. A teenage girl gets on, waves away the smoke from Dead Bucks cigarette. Will doesnt know her, but she knew him. Knew. When they were eight. And stray bullets had cut through the playground, and Will had tried to cover her, but she was hit anyway, and so what she wants to know, on that fifth floor elevator stop, is, what if Will, Will with the gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, MISSES. And so it goes, the whole long way down, as the elevator stops on each floor, and at each stop someone connected to his brother gets on to give Will a piece to a bigger story than the one he thinks he knows. A story that might never know an ENDif WILL gets off that elevator. Told in short, fierce staccato narrative verse, Long Way Down is a fast and furious, dazzlingly brilliant look at teenage gun violence, as could only be told by Jason Reynolds.

I‘m still thinking about many of Reynolds‘ statements. Fluid, humorous, poetic, honest, painful. He was expected to talk for 35 minutes, do a Q&A for 30 minutes and then sign books. Instead he spoke & answered questions for 2 hours. Signed books for another hour. A wonderful presentation. On the plus side (for me anyway) a student athlete fell asleep and ended up with his head on my shoulder for the last hour. I felt oddly protective. 😍😂

AmyG Ha! The student must have been mortified when he found out. ;) 1mo

A bit of a stretch, but my form of #selflove was wrangling a ticket to see Jason tonight at a small local college where this book was the “common read” for all incoming students. I love this guy and was thrilled to get one of the few tickets available. A side note: the mother of the little boy I babysit organized the event, picked up Reynolds at the airport and went to dinner with him. Three hours of his time all to herself. Sigh.

Trying to look for this prompt has my head spinning and I feel like I'm not trying hard enough. Zombies aren't for me so Dread Nation is out, I read Kindred about 20 years ago and I'm finding lots of paranormal romance which isn't going to happen! Looking for alternate suggestions for the #POCMCParanormal prompt! #Help #InSearchOfSuggestions #LibrariansOfLitsy

Bookzombie I think this would work. I‘m probably going to go with a book by Daniel José Older. 1mo
IamIamIam @Bookzombie Thanks! I've not heard of Older yet so I can take a look at the options. 😁 1mo
Hestapleton I bet this would work! 1mo

IamIamIam @Hestapleton Ooooh, good call!!! I have those on my TBR! 1mo
LibrarianRyan While it's not really a paranormal book, he is visited by ghosts which are paranormal, so I say go for it. 1mo
IamIamIam @LibrarianRyan That's what I thought. With Kindred, I didn't think time travel is really paranormal but ghosts definitely count. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft Labyrinth Lost would definitely work! I like that book, but FYI it does have a romance component. A few others are Shadowshaper, Akata Witch, and Fledgling. 1mo
IamIamIam @4thhouseontheleft Awesome suggestions!!! Thanks so much!!! I have Labyrinth Lost on hold with Libby but I'll definitely check out the others! I think I was focusing on the POC part but not really thinking of all the colors available. 😂 Also, thanks for the heads up on romance! I can handle a relationship but not a romantic focus. 🤢 I know, very tween of me... LOL 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @IamIamIam Labryinth Lost has a love triangle component. It‘s not a huge part of the plot, but it is there. 1mo
IamIamIam @Bookzombie @Hestapleton @LibrarianRyan @4thhouseontheleft I was talking to my husband about the prompt and he asked if it was just ghosts or magic also. He suggested this too... what do you guys think? We have the audio, which is a huge bonus! 1mo
mrp27 American Gods works, I was thinking about doing that one and Long Way Down certainly works, it's a fantastic read! 1mo

A blunt, gut wrenching view of inner city life and the havoc and unnecessary loss of life that grudges and revenge cause. Surreal and vivid, we follow a boy on his way to kill his brother's killer. In the elevator, he encounters ghosts of loved ones who died by unnecessary gun violence. He is left to either perpetuate the vicious cycle or make a change. Highly recommended!

This novel in verse creates an intense story like standing on a precipice at the moment before a fall. Yet, I felt something was missing. I think it comes down to these quotes. If connecting with this character, there are no options. If already feeling broken, there‘s no choice but to follow “The Rules.” I want the reader to see an alternative, an idea of how to move forward after identifying oneself in the story. Maybe I just want the impossible.

Jason Reynolds gave an amazing talk about the importance of kids seeing themselves in the books they read! 📚💕 #nerdcamp

marleed For 4 years I volunteered as an usher at a diverse, large city performing arts center. My biggest take away was not the famous artists. It was that people want to be entertained, challenged, taught, and inspired by people who look like them. I had no idea that would be my biggest take away and inspiration. We all deserve this. 3mo
Tamra 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 3mo
Branwen @marleed YES! 💕 I completely agree, that is one of the most important things in the world, I think. And after this conference I feel even more excited about getting books into kids habds that feature characters that lpok like them! 💕📚 Also WOW what an amazing volunteer experience! 😀 That must have been incredible to be inspired that way! 3mo

Another powerful novel - this one in free verse. I listened to the audiobook read by the author. It‘s difficult to imagine any young person being in the situation where the rule is that if someone in your family is killed, you must kill the murderer. I know it happens and am so thankful that my children will never know what that‘s like. My heart goes out to anyone in that situation and I hope that Reynolds‘s book can help end it. 4.5/5.0 ⭐️ #2019

Incredible. Seriously, so incredible. Sharp and poignant and just perfectly written. When people tell me they don't like certain genres, I get it. Novels in verse are one I hear that about a lot. And really, there are some pretty terrible novels in verse. THIS will be the book I tell them to look to as an example of the genre at its top form. It is tight and contained in the best way that good poetry is. Continued in comments.

Krisjericho I listened to Jason Reynolds narrate the audio, and I recommend that. He knows exactly where he means for emphasis to be, and the man is a wordsmith in the genuine sense of the meaning. I was quite honestly blown away. This is my top contender for my favorite book of the year so far. 6mo

Quick read. The meat of the story has some snappy, effective dialogue. Some readers will hate the ending, as it is intentionally left open-ended. Not a bad read, but not one I would pick up again.

This was beautifully written in verse, I had it as an audiobook read by the author, so I got to hear it as intended. The ending was definitely something to think about seeing as how it was open ended and leaves it up to the readers judgement as to what happens.

One-word description? Chilling. Not just because it's a boy in an elevator talking to ghosts. The themes are chilling on their own: cycles of violence perpetuated by hurt people, pain & death & violence suffered by children at such young ages, & the idea that this is reality that many of us allow to continue in many neighborhoods. The writing is clever & the twists are heart-wrenching. I think I prefer Reynolds's prose, but I'm glad I read it!
