Long Way Down
Long Way Down | Jason Reynolds
An ode to Put the Damn Guns Down, this is National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestseller Jason Reynolds’s fiercely stunning novel that takes place in sixty potent seconds—the time it takes a kid to decide whether or not he’s going to murder the guy who killed his brother. A cannon. A strap. A piece. A biscuit. A burner. A heater. A chopper. A gat. A hammer A tool for RULE Or, you can call it a gun. That’s what fifteen-year-old Will has shoved in the back waistband of his jeans. See, his brother Shawn was just murdered. And Will knows the rules. No crying. No snitching. Revenge. That’s where Will’s now heading, with that gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, the gun that was his brother’s gun. He gets on the elevator, seventh floor, stoked. He knows who he’s after. Or does he? As the elevator stops on the sixth floor, on comes Buck. Buck, Will finds out, is who gave Shawn the gun before Will took the gun. Buck tells Will to check that the gun is even loaded. And that’s when Will sees that one bullet is missing. And the only one who could have fired Shawn’s gun was Shawn. Huh. Will didn’t know that Shawn had ever actually USED his gun. Bigger huh. BUCK IS DEAD. But Buck’s in the elevator? Just as Will’s trying to think this through, the door to the next floor opens. A teenage girl gets on, waves away the smoke from Dead Buck’s cigarette. Will doesn’t know her, but she knew him. Knew. When they were eight. And stray bullets had cut through the playground, and Will had tried to cover her, but she was hit anyway, and so what she wants to know, on that fifth floor elevator stop, is, what if Will, Will with the gun shoved in the back waistband of his jeans, MISSES. And so it goes, the whole long way down, as the elevator stops on each floor, and at each stop someone connected to his brother gets on to give Will a piece to a bigger story than the one he thinks he knows. A story that might never know an END…if WILL gets off that elevator. Told in short, fierce staccato narrative verse, Long Way Down is a fast and furious, dazzlingly brilliant look at teenage gun violence, as could only be told by Jason Reynolds.

Another powerful novel - this one in free verse. I listened to the audiobook read by the author. It‘s difficult to imagine any young person being in the situation where the rule is that if someone in your family is killed, you must kill the murderer. I know it happens and am so thankful that my children will never know what that‘s like. My heart goes out to anyone in that situation and I hope that Reynolds‘s book can help end it. 4.5/5.0 ⭐️ #2019

Listened to this in under 2 hours yesterday. First, let me say the author has a mesmerizing voice, I could listen to him all day! This is a short listen about a boy in the hood wanting to bestow revenge on his brother‘s killer, but then he encounters some interesting characters on his elevator ride down... an interesting listen! #longwaydown #jasonreynolds #smoothvoice

Incredible. Seriously, so incredible. Sharp and poignant and just perfectly written. When people tell me they don't like certain genres, I get it. Novels in verse are one I hear that about a lot. And really, there are some pretty terrible novels in verse. THIS will be the book I tell them to look to as an example of the genre at its top form. It is tight and contained in the best way that good poetry is. Continued in comments.

Krisjericho I listened to Jason Reynolds narrate the audio, and I recommend that. He knows exactly where he means for emphasis to be, and the man is a wordsmith in the genuine sense of the meaning. I was quite honestly blown away. This is my top contender for my favorite book of the year so far. 4w

Quick read. The meat of the story has some snappy, effective dialogue. Some readers will hate the ending, as it is intentionally left open-ended. Not a bad read, but not one I would pick up again.

*I read the audiobook and forgot to grab a photo of the cover.

This was beautifully written in verse, I had it as an audiobook read by the author, so I got to hear it as intended. The ending was definitely something to think about seeing as how it was open ended and leaves it up to the readers judgement as to what happens.

Today was gorgeous out! I forgot to take a photo on my walk, but this book was great company. I‘m in Omaha and there is crazy flooding in eastern NE and western Iowa that many are dealing with, so I‘m especially grateful for the simple pleasure of a good book and a nice walk today. #litsywalkers

Kaye Great job ✨✨✨ 2mo
ErinC @KathyWheeler It‘s crazy here. Omaha is fine mostly but the towns along the Platte, Elk Horn rivers are in bad shape. More levees breaching all the time. The Missouri is flooding worse than 2011 I think too. We had so much snow that melted so quickly. I hope your brother isn‘t affected! 2mo

I don‘t think we had YA books when I was growing up. I sure wish we did. This novel, told in verse, addresses loss and revenge. Ghosts from the MC‘s past meet him in the elevator as he goes to avenge his brother‘s death. I have gone through YouTube to listen to Reynolds and appreciate him so much. His advice to writers was ❤️ in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58hF22Yz9gs

One-word description? Chilling. Not just because it's a boy in an elevator talking to ghosts. The themes are chilling on their own: cycles of violence perpetuated by hurt people, pain & death & violence suffered by children at such young ages, & the idea that this is reality that many of us allow to continue in many neighborhoods. The writing is clever & the twists are heart-wrenching. I think I prefer Reynolds's prose, but I'm glad I read it!

Brilliant story. Surreal and heart wrenching. The characters were distinct and full, the setting sparse yet clear, fit well with this story. The voice! Absolutely stunning. Finished this one tonight and wow. Jason Reynolds‘ ability to convey so much emotion into a book comprised entirely of verse is amazing. The story would not have been the same had it been a “typical” novel. It was obvious while reading that every word was necessary and carefully chosen to make the reader feel.
The ending threw me for a loop and I am curious as to what other readers took it to mean.....

Short & powerful... and so relevant to our time. I‘m glad it was in verse and that the author was able to narrate. I don‘t think I fully “got” the whole story without seeing the words on the page, but I was still bowled over by the intensity that can be conveyed in such few words and overwhelmed by the internal considerations of the MC. Will definitely have to pick up a print copy for a reread.
