Slaughterhouse-Five: Or the Children's Crusade, a Duty-Dance with Death
Slaughterhouse-Five: Or the Children's Crusade, a Duty-Dance with Death | Kurt Jr. Vonnegut
Billy Pilgrim is the son of an American barber. He serves as a chaplain's assistant in World War II, is captured by the Germans, and he survives the largest massacre in European history--the fire bombing of Dresden. After the war Billy makes a great deal of money as an optometrist, and on his wedding night he is kidnapped by a flying saucer from the planet Tralfamadore. So begins a modern classic by a master storyteller.

https://nerdist.com/article/slaughterhouse-five-graphic-novel/

Slaughter House Five graphic novel is being released in September. I'm a huge Vonnegut fan. I'm pretty excited. Depending on how this one goes I really hope they do more of his books. I'd like to see Galapagos as a graphic novel.

Buechersuechtling Sometimes the Goddess of Books and reading has quite a sense of humour and/or coincidence. I just yesterday put my first Vonnegut –“Slaughterhouse-Five” – on my stack/tbr after I read the review @Jari-chan posted about his “Mother Night”. 😄 1w
Patchshank @Buechersuechtling it's always fun when stuff like that happens 😊 I hope you enjoy it when you get around to reading it. If you like it you'll probably like most of his other stuff. He has such a warped sense of humor in all his books. 1w

@Jari-chan posted a review of “Mother Night” and that reminded me of that I always wanted to read something by this author whom I only “know” as “famous name”. Thankfully she also dropped the title of his most famous book: “Slaughterhouse Five”. I didn‘t have high hopes as I searched my online library‘s catalogue for it.

But look‼️😄

I put it on my wish list because “Sing, Unburied, Sing” seems to be such strong stuff.

Jari-chan I wonder what you'll think of this book 😊 2w
Buechersuechtling @Jari-chan It might take a while until I will manage to read it – or it might not. I at the moment can‘t figure this out but I promise to try to tag you/let you know about my thoughts and impressions. 2w
Jari-chan @Buechersuechtling I know this all well enough 😁 Don't worry and don't stress. If you read it, tag me. If you don't read it I hope you have a lot of other great books on your shelf 😁 2w

I finished my first book of the year! I can't believe I've never read Vonnegut before.

I promised I'd post my book journal, so here it is! I am using it as a tool to study for my Praxis as well, so that's why I put all the information about the literary movements, publish date, etc.

jenn0889 This title is on my TBR for the year. Ive read Cat's Cradle previously and love Vonneguts style 4w

I can't believe it took me this long to finally delve into a Vonnegut book, but I'm glad I finally did it. It's amazing how he can write something that is somehow hilarious even when it is bleak and dry. There were quite a few quotes I found memorable, whether because they were profound or profoundly funny. I loved it.

"He felt spooky and luminous" is the kind of vibe I 100% want to bring into the new year/decade. Thanks, Vonnegut.

Last book for November and this was a weird one. It is about a man, Billy Pilgrim, who gets displaced in time and is kidnapped by aliens. All of this starts when he is a soldier during World War 2. You never really know whether he's nuts or not.

After reading this book I thought back to my days in school and asked myself, why didn't we read this? Or Catch 22? These books are printed awesomeness.

Incredible anti-war novel, the story of Billy Pilgrim, who has become unstuck in time. Billy, like Vonnegut, witnessed the firebombing of Dresden as a POW. Billy also has been abducted by aliens, been a successful businessman, and more, always knowing his inevitable future. Great read for #BannedBooksWeek https://cannonballread.com/2019/09/slaughterhouse-five-elcicco/

I‘ve read a few of the author‘s novels, and this is by far my least favorite...so it goes. It reads fairly monotonously, and the plot is forgettable. In all honesty it was my hope that each next page would bring some fresh twist or revelation that helped me make it all the way through. I would recommend spending time on his other books instead of this one.

And Lot‘s wife, of course, was told not to look back where all those people & their homes had been. But she did look back, & I love her for that, because it was so human.
So she was turned to a pillar of salt. So it goes.
People aren‘t supposed to look back. I‘m certainly not going to do it anymore. I‘ve finished my war book now. The next one I write is going to be fun. This one is a failure, & had to be since it was written by a pillar of salt.

GingerAntics Is this from the beginning? Where are you in the book so far? 5mo
Daisey This was one of the quotes from this book that struck me the most when I read it. 5mo
Faibka @GingerAntics it‘s near the end, I‘ve already finished it but I‘m going back to quotes I found interesting 5mo
Faibka @Daisey yes! For me too. In the midst of all the dark humor there‘s a very powerful message of the senselessness of war and how it dehumanizes, which is why I liked the book so much 5mo
GingerAntics That‘s what I thought, but this seemed almost like it belonged at the beginning. I guess I‘m going to have to get reading beyond the intro. 5mo
