Meditations
Meditations | Marcus Aurelius
Meditations is a series of writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor 161-180 CE, setting forth his ideas on Stoic philosophy. A central theme to "Meditations" is to analyze your judgement of self and others and developing a cosmic perspective. As he said "You have the power to strip away many superfluous troubles located wholly in your judgement, and to possess a large room for yourself embracing in thought the whole cosmos, to consider everlasting time, to think of the rapid change in the parts of each thing, of how short it is from birth until dissolution, and how the void before birth and that after dissolution are equally infinite". He advocates finding one's place in the universe and sees that everything came from nature, and so everything shall return to it in due time. It seems at some points in his work that we are all part of a greater construct thus taking a collectivist approach rather than having an individualist perspective. Another strong theme is of maintaining focus and to be without distraction all the while maintaining strong ethical principles such as "Being a good man". His Stoic ideas often involve avoiding indulgence in sensory affections, a skill which will free a man from the pains and pleasures of the material world. He claims that the only way a man can be harmed by others is to allow his reaction to overpower him. An order or logos permeates existence. Rationality and clear-mindedness allow one to live in harmony with the logos.

“Constantly regard the universe as one living being, having one substance and one soul; and observe how all things have reference to one perception, the perception of this one living being; and how all things act with one movement; and how all things are the cooperating causes of all things that exist; observe, too, the continuous spinning of the thread and the contexture of the web.”

quote

“Love the art, poor as it may be, that thou hast learned, and be content with it; and pass through the rest of life like one who has intrusted to the gods with his whole soul all that he has, making thyself neither the tyrant nor the slave of any man.”
👇🏼

Bookwomble Self-doubt is something I can struggle with; remembering that I am good enough can be difficult. Unreflectively reacting to my feelings of inadequacy and incompleteness with anger and remonstrance, or subordinating my needs to those of others to feel acceptable, all things that I recognise in myself. Aurelius's meditation helps me to connect with compassion for self and others, though it can be hard work at times. 2w

“The universe is transformation; life is opinion.”

I like the brevity of this translation, though the meaning is, perhaps, a little clearer in this one:

“The universe is change; our life is what our thoughts make it.”

"We must make haste then, not only because we are daily nearer death, but also because the conception of things and the understanding of them cease first."

Cheery soul, old Marcus!
And yet, while remembrance of death may at times be morbid, it can also be freeing and uplifting.

quote
Bookwomble
post image

"Remember how long thou hast been putting off these things, & how often thou hast received an opportunity from the gods, & yet thou dost not use it. Thou must now at last perceive of what universe thou art a part, & of what administrator of the universe thy existence is an efflux, & that a limit of time is fixed for thee, which if thou dost not use for clearing away the clouds from thy mind, it will go & thou wilt go, & it will never return."

Despite, or perhaps because of, not doing much today ahead of work in the evening, my head has been feeling rather muzzy. I've found a modern translation of Marcus Aurelius helpful in the past, and hope this nice-looking 1904 edition of an 1873 revision of an 1862 translation will read well.

Aimeesue Lovely cover! And it's just the perfect size! 3w

Palimpsest I absolutely love it. I read Meditations earlier this year and it has become one of my favorite books. 3w

Bookwomble @batsy It's has ingeniously textured board covers, designed to look like leather. As a veggie, I'm glad it's fake! The design is lovely, though 😊💖📖💖 3w
Bookwomble @Palimpsest It's a wonderful read, though at times I think Aurelius asks too much of himself. I don't think it's healthy to feel nothing at the death of a child (though clearly, he does feel, but thinks he shouldn't). 3w
Bookwomble @Aimeesue It's very pocketable! Though I must stress that I did buy it 😁 3w
Aimeesue @Bookwomble Ha! I love the smaller book sizes — I started collecting old Modern Library editions a while ago because they're almost the perfect size and they're so well made. I wish they were just a skosh smaller, but they'll do. (edited) 3w
Bookwomble @Aimeesue The old Everyman series and Collins Clear-Type Press editions are nice handy sizes, too 😊 3w

This week I did a lot better with my meditation goals. I made my 3 day goal for meditation, 3/5 for exercising and I'm now 9/10 for books, admittedly my eating wasn't great but I did drink more water. So all in all it wasn't a bad week but I'm hoping to do better for the last one 😺

I really like this little literary magazine from Penguin Books. In each issue that take one person and one book. The first half of the magazine explores the bookish life of one famous person... and the second half is a series of interesting articles, photo stories and snippets linked to the the book selected for the issue! It‘s a very interesting format - I always learn so much!

Day 1 of #bookfitnesschallenge. My goals are pretty lax: 1. Move every day. 2. Listen to a book while I move. 3. Continue a low carb, low fat way of eating. I lost 13 pounds last month. Only 80 to go. 😂 #gilmoregirlsreadingchallenge #aty2019

I loved this book which I‘m sure I‘ll read again. This specific edition has a nice intro about Marcus and stoicism. The book read to me like daily affirmations and thoughts to live by; some repeated such as to live in the present. Some meditations seem more like observations, “disgraceful: that the mind should control the face, should be able to shape and mold as it pleases, but not shape and mold itself.” Or don‘t let your imagination be crushed

Palimpsest As a whole. Don‘t try to picture everything bad that could possibly happen.” It‘s a book you could read as a whole and then pick it up daily and choose a few passages to ponder. I highly recommend this book and know I will return to it often. 7mo

This is a must read for anyone even remotely interested in Philosophy. It is hard to believe that this was written back in Ancient Roman times, because so many of his words connected with me and are relevant to the current climate. There are soo many quotes that have become a firm favourite of mine, and I will definitely delve into this publication time and time again. loved it! #marcusaurelius #philosophy #ancientrome

I finished this #classic of #philosophy this morning. It has a great deal of wisdom on issues ranging from nature, death, ethics, justice, peace, and duty all while being handled with the emotional maturity and understanding that is the trademark of Stoicism. Written over his lifetime, it certainly contains a lifetime of wisdom.
It has a looser feel than other philosophical works, and repeated itself on many topics. I would highly recommend.

Read for 29 min, finished book 4, earned 2.9 readercoin AND got my second badge in my library‘s reading program and get to pick out a free book! It‘s been a good night!

Joyfulmimi I loved this book! 1y
QuoteQueen @Joyfulmimi I am having some difficulty with it. I am unsure if it‘s this particular translation or the (seemingly) lack on context for each “meditation”. Though at times there are some great points! Do you have any recommendations for translation/how to approach this book? 1y
Joyfulmimi Not many other people than me love it. I read it as a book of random quotations 1y
See All 18 Comments
Joyfulmimi Its not like a story 1y
Joyfulmimi I guess thoughts run through my mind like that so I got it. I loved the points he made. 1y
QuoteQueen @Joyfulmimi seeing it as a book of random quotes may be helpful. I get they were self reflections not really meant to be published I just find myself asking, “who is this person to you? What happened that day? Did somebody hurt you?!?!?” 😂 some points are really great though. 1y
Joyfulmimi I read a bit of his history. I am sure he was hurt. I guess I always resonate with that kinda thing. (edited) 1y
QuoteQueen @Joyfulmimi maybe I need to learn a bit more about him 😊 1y
Joyfulmimi Maybe you should try another edition. I think his bio was in the first section of my book. I got the book from the library so do not have a copy. 1y
QuoteQueen @Joyfulmimi that‘s what I‘m thinking, a different translation may make a world of difference. This one is strictly just the basics with no extra information. 1y
Joyfulmimi Yes! Find a Penguin or Barnes and Noble. 1y
QuoteQueen @Joyfulmimi we have a Barnes & Noble here and they almost always have it, I frequent the philosophy section nearly every time I go. 😉 1y
Joyfulmimi Yay! I am pretty sure mine was Penguin Classic Edition. I looked on LibraryThing 1y
QuoteQueen @Joyfulmimi oh cool. I‘ll definitely pick up a hard copy at some point. I like to underline and ebooks just don‘t give me the same satisfaction in doing that. Haha 1y
Joyfulmimi You and I are alike in that. I hardly ever use Ebooks 1y
QuoteQueen @Joyfulmimi the main reason I‘m even reading it as an ebook is 1) I can earn rewards while reading it via readercoin and 2) can read while my son falls asleep. There‘s a LOT of Plato and a few different Stoic works on there. 1y
Joyfulmimi Ohhhh 1y
QuoteQueen @Joyfulmimi yep. It‘s kinda nice to be able to read in the dark, but like I said, I somewhat questioned the translation/edition since it‘s free. But it‘s better for the soul than Facebook scrolling while I wait for him to sleep. 😊 1y

Not book related, but good things must be shared, right? 😊 I went MIA for 10 days as I participated in 10-day meditation course in Kyoto. It‘s not linked to a certain religion; Vipassana meditation requires you to do good to other beings, control your mind, and achieve wisdom by understanding that nothing in life is permanent. I highly recommend this to you, fellow Littens. Check out www.dhamma.org They have centres around the globe 👇🏻

sisilia For 10 days, we observed noble silence ie. no talking, no eye contact, no physical contact with other meditators. At the start of the course, you were asked to surrender your personal belongings. So no books, no phone, no journal. Oh, vegetarian food through the whole stay, too. Everything I just mentioned was not difficult to deal with. 👇🏻 2y
sisilia The most difficult part is to concentrate on the meditation, to control your mind, and be totally committed to the gruelling set hours. Yes, I‘m talking about waking up at 4am in the morning, meditate for 10 hours a day, and be in bed by 9.30pm. However, it was an amazing experience for me. I‘m nowhere near enlightenment 🤣 but now I understand the concept and the technique, as the course set the foundation for a life-long learning about Vipassana 2y
