So normally, I am not into the alcoholic cop/detective cliche as a main character but I found Roxane to be a compelling narrator. Perhaps, because her alcohol use was in part fueled by grief and not just due to the job. The mystery was compelling. It was nice to have a bisexual main character with relationships that felt real. I will definitely read the sequel if there's one.

You have to forgive people for being who they are. Otherwise you‘ll just make yourself crazy.

There is no trouble and there is no paradise, there‘s just the life I‘ve chosen. Some days I love it and some days I hate it. But I chose it, and that‘s all.

This series caught my eye from a @bookriot email and @Matilda was right- this looks to be a great mystery series.

I really liked this mystery. The main character is Roxane, a female PI in Columbus, OH, and she takes a job trying to locate a witness in order to free a man who's scheduled to be executed for a murder he didn't commit. It reminded me a little of the Kinsey Millhone series, but a little darker. Still a quick, easy read, though. I will continue reading this series, although there's only 1 or 2 more books so far.

Starting a new book and have to say I'm intrigued by this introduction to the main character, who is a PI. It's a local author and setting, which is also interesting. So far, I'm getting Kinsey Millhone vibes, which is a compliment.

Just got sucked in here and lost an hour and a half. Whoops. Should I go work on one of my novels or just plow through the last 90 pages?

Brilliant! It has all the ingredients of a good thriller, I barely put it down than i wanted to pick it up again. Has lots in common with Swierczynski's Revolver (cold case, female lead, cop father, dysfunctional family, drinking and more drinking) but this one felt like an easier read.

The last book of 2018 ended on a high note. This thriller was great. It kept my attention all the way through, I couldn't put it down, and the ending was actually realistic. #thriller #mystery

Kristen Lepionka‘s crime novel (the first in a series) has a PI heroine who hits a lot of the detective cliches (an alcoholic whose private life is a mess) but puts enough of a spin on them to keep me interested (notably her bisexuality and the love triangle with femme fatale Catherine and Tom, her dad‘s old partner) while the mystery unfolds at a decent pace and had enough twists and turns to hold my interest, such that I‘d check out the sequel.

Enjoyed this dark, blackly comic PI crime fiction. Roxane (the spelling is a plot point) takes no prisoners, and has good reason for the troubled home life.

Finished this suspense mystery all in one day, which attests to the mood it created. I enjoyed the ride this story took me on, even the times I was saying “No! Don‘t do that!!” to the main character. I enjoyed her as a flawed person, even if some of her flaws seemed very stereotypical, and her bi-rep was really well done without being over the top. Overall I‘m willing to check out the second in the series. #TheLastPlaceYouLook #KristenLepionka

This was an excellent crime novel with a great protagonist. Roxane is a PI with her own issues to work through while she tries to get to the bottom of what was supposedly a cold case. Plus she‘s bisexual which is some refreshing representation. The narrator does a particularly fine job of capturing Roxane‘s bone dry tone and I‘ll definitely be listening to the next one.

I‘m only about fifty pages in, but have already been thoroughly sucked in and taken by Roxane‘s sharp charm. And she is bisexual! This makes me so happy. I love meeting my fellow bisexuals in fiction. #bisexualbooks #queerbooks

A fabulous and assured debut mystery novel! Roxane Weary is a bisexual PI who's been drinking too much while grieving the death of her cop father, who she had a complicated relationship with. A new case, which starts off as a missing person sighting related to an old murder case, becomes more complex the more Roxane investigates. Amazing, messy, authentic characterization and relationships plus some beautiful understated writing. #BisexualBooks

I‘m spending most of this long weekend finally cleaning up the new house. We are still a ways away (no couch yet) but vast improvement. This is our Kansas wall in our bedroom. I did finish this book in less than 24 hours; I read it on a recommendation from @Liberty on All the Books. It‘s a great mystery/thriller and I immediately ordered the next one!

Really enjoyed this mystery. It kept me guessing and turning pages! Can‘t wait to get my hands on the second in the series.

I've been doing chores all day and there's still lots more to do, but stealing a few minutes for egg salad and this, which is excellent this far.

“Be nice but not too fucking nice.” Hard boiled #feminist crime fiction. PI novel with #noir elements. I really liked this one. ⚖️⚖️⚖️⚖️

This book isn't perfect (I think the title is a spoiler and the protagonist is annoyingly single-minded at times), but I loved it. The resolution, even when suspected, is still awesome. And if I had to pick a favorite microgenre, it would be feminist crime fiction featuring a hard-drinking, bisexual female protagonist, so this book is clearly my jam. So excited for #2 next year!

Even though he is asleep, after reading this book I don't know when I will sleep again. It gave me so much to think about and a great ending. I'm so glad it's number one in a series.

I'm liking this a lot so far. I hope the second half holds up. Also, I'm listening to Lip Sync Battle with Anne Hathaway and Emily Blount. What else is there?

I'm not very far but Lepionka had me from the first paragraph when Roxane answers her phone, hung over, from beneath her desk when she is drawn into this case, mostly because she needs the money. Roxane is an interesting character: world weary, smart, stubborn. I wish I could call in sick just so I could read this book. (Kris, pay no attention to that last sentence.) 🙄😬😆

This was an excellent first mystery. Strong, hardboiled female PI. Gripping mystery that veered towards the thriller, this was a complete fun read. Looking forward to the next Roxane (with one N) Weary book.

Don't let the cover distract and be "the last place you look"...also really wanted to share the Despicable nails of a coworker. And I can't wait to start this book! ??

Bisexual characters in books seem pretty rare, even more so in the mystery genre. Not only does this mystery have a bi P.I. it doesn't take the path I thought it would and starts as a mystery and ends as a thriller--with plenty of suspects. Perfect if you're looking for a beach read.
