Futurist as provocateur! The world is sheer batshit genius . . . a truly hallucinatorily envisioned environment.William Gibson, New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Timely, dark, and ultimately hopeful: it might not make America great again, but then again, it just might.Cory Doctorow, New York Times bestselling and award winning author of Homeland Acclaimed short story writer and editor of the World Fantasy Award-nominee Three Messages and a Warning eerily envisions an American society unraveling and our borders closed offfrom the other sidein this haunting and provocative novel that combines Max Barrys Jennifer Government, Philip K. Dicks classic Man in the High Castle, and China Mievilles The City & the City The United States of America is no more. Broken into warring territories, its center has become a wasteland DMZ known as the Tropic of Kansas. Though this gaping geographic hole has no clear boundaries, everyone knows it's out therethat once-bountiful part of the heartland, broken by greed and exploitation, where neglect now breeds unrest. Two travelers appear in this arid American wilderness: Sig, the fugitive orphan of political dissidents, and his foster sister Tania, a government investigator whose search for Sig leads her into her own pastand towards an unexpected future. Sig promised those he loves that he would make it to the revolutionary redoubt of occupied New Orleans. But first he must survive the wild edgelands of a barren mid-America policed by citizen militias and autonomous drones, where one wrong move can mean capture . . . or death. One step behind, undercover in the underground, is Tania. Her infiltration of clandestine networks made of old technology and new politics soon transforms her into the hunted one, and gives her a shot at being the agent of real changeif she is willing to give up the explosive government secrets she has sworn to protect. As brother and sister traverse these vast and dangerous badlands, their paths will eventually intersect on the front lines of a revolution whose fuse they are about to light.

Great idea but not a great delivery. It has a very busy, disjointed structure which constantly bombards you with new information. Maybe a deliberate tactic to empathise with the characters?? It has moments of inspired phrases and suspense but not enough to carry you through the entire storyline. I had to persevere to finish this one...

tpixie @mdhughes72 lol I did too!! I caught it when I wasn‘t reading it- I just looked down at it, then it POPPED out. Before that I guess my brain just kept automatically correcting it. I do hate typos though. ( not a fan of this book either- was doing a buddy read and then got behind and I tried restarting it this morning but wondering whether I really should except only have about 50 pages left to read!) 6y
MandaChittles @tpixie - it was probably one of my least favourite reads of 2017 - although I thought it was a fantastic idea! 6y
tpixie @MandaChittles totally agree! Lol and since I‘m still not done with it, I anticipate it will be my worst read of 2018 as well! 😜😝😆 6y

I have to admit, political dystopia novels just aren't as fun to read when they stop feeling like fiction.

Only one more week! A lot happened in this week's sections. What are your favorite dystopias? Tropic of Kansas is a lot more action driven than other dystopian novels I've read. If I had to label it, I'd call it a dystopian thriller. Thoughts/impressions? #kansas

Our new place is still a total mess (still haven't had time to really unpack much!) but it's slowly getting there (ish). Taking a break to read a little, something else I haven't had any time for. I haven't gotten very far in this book, but it's quite interesting so far!

Cecibmg Hi @allthembooks Would you recommend it? 6y
allthembooks @Cecibmg Hi! If you enjoy dystopian novels or political thrillers, this book is worth checking out! It was so-so for me, I struggled with it at times (I dont read a ton of dystopia type) but other times couldn't put it down. It can be frightening realistic. 6y

Sig & Tania uncover more secrets. There is a lot of passages about media & computer technology, especially hacking, coding, secret channels. William Gibson blurbed this book & Brown is definitely influenced by cyberpunk. Is this working for you? Is it too much filler? Thoughts/impressions?#kansas

KimHM @vivastory They were performing as Dave Rawlings Machine at the Folly. I'm a complete Gillian Welch fan, but it was still a great show. So much energy, so much connection with the audience. 7y

Viji Mine is due back at the library, so I'll finish this weekend. The short chapters make everything seem so disconnected which works for the plot. Descriptions of the landscape are so surreal and you really get the feel of being on the run. 7y

The journey continues. There were some uncomfortable truths in sections three and four. We're introduced to more of the history, much of it features real life historical figures. Occasionally with different outcomes. Thoughts/impressions? Do alternate histories feel as convincing as historical fiction? #kansas

KimHM Alternate history can be completely convincing--witness Philip Roth's The Plot Against America--but I get the feeling that Brown is not committed to his alternative outcomes. It's as though he crossed Blade Runner with 1984 and failed to nurture the offspring. Is anyone else struggling to stay interested in such thinly drawn characters? #kansas 7y
vivastory @KimHM It definitely is more plot driven than character development. It feels a bit like a dystopian thriller. Blade Runner and 1984 are interesting comparisons. I wish there was a little more detail on the alternate history, a lot of it is told in fragments & glimpses. 7y
KimHM Maybe the second half we'll get more details about how the Iran hostages and "the Gipper" lead to the state of things in the novel's present? And I'm hoping the characters will begin to flesh out when Tania finally catches up with Sig. #kansas @vivastory 7y
See All 13 Comments
Scurvygirl It was interesting to see where history veered off and what the consequences were. Do I think that it needs to go into a lot of detail to get the message across. Not really. The story is about Sid and Tania, so I would rather see their history and more character development there. I especially enjoyed the mall scene, it showed true colors all around. (edited) 7y
vivastory @Scurvygirl The mall scene was interesting due to the militarization of the police & using the media to intimidate potential future protesters. Also, the scene where Tania is in the club listening to the slogans & speeches about justice & democracy. 7y
tpixie @Scurvygirl I too like the Sig & Tania connection. @KimHM maybe things aren't as developed because the author is used to writing short stories? 7y
tpixie Thanks for the questions @vivastory !! 7y
KimHM Indeed, @tpixie that could be a problem. 7y

Chloe is surprised to learn that these are true interrogation techniques!! #DogsOfLitsy #Kansas

Leniverse Omg, if they get to actual examples of those techniques, please post photos! 😂 7y
tpixie Ok! I found them by googling them along with the word interrogation! Most of it I found in Google books in the KUBARK----- In July 1963, the Central Intelligence Agency printed a secret handbook on interrogation that remained a standard reference for two decades. The text, ''KUBARK Counterintelligence Interrogation,'' -- KUBARK being a cryptonym, KU a random diptych and BARK the agency's code word for itself at that time 7y
tpixie @Leniverse sorry forgot to tag you in post above! 👆🏻 7y

tpixie @mom2bugnbee I think so too! We should have it on our walls at home, school, & work! 7y
vivastory It's a good equation for individual life. It's problematic though when the government dictates what citizen's responsibilities are. 7y
See All 10 Comments
KimHM Exactly, @vivastory. I took this as a allusion to the Party Slogans in 1984. 7y
tpixie @vivastory interesting - yes, esp with a dictatorship- our 3 branches of government, while not perfect, can help prevent this. Glad for democracy!! @KimHM (edited) 7y
PatternsOnWalls Wow! I agree, too! I'm a teacher and this is essentially what we try to teach our students every day. 7y
tpixie @PatternsOnWalls ❤️📚❤️ love our teachers!! 7y
KimHM But *in the context of THIS novel* this is clearly a totalitarian slogan. The sign is in a prison. The president pictured is from the only available party. That's the problem with abstract sound-bites, they can be taken to mean anything you want. @tpixie @vivastory @mom2bugnbee @PatternsOnWalls 7y
PatternsOnWalls @KimHM Very true. I've no idea what this book is about, but now you have me intrigued so I'll definitely be shelving this one 👌🏽 7y

The book opens in Minnesota. International Falls & Duluth (birthplace of Bob Dylan) are both mentioned. Have you visited Minnesota? Thoughts on the book? General impressions?

Hollie I have not visited Minnesota, maybe someday! I'm also not quite finished with parts 1 and 2 (long day) but so far I'm intrigued! 7y
Alfoster Born in Minnesota! Would love to go back and visit! 7y
KimHM I have not visited Minnesota, but some of the locales are familiar from Tim O'Brien's stories, particularly the Rainy River (the one in which he contemplates going to Canada instead of Vietnam). Whether Brown knew this or cared is probably too early to determine. (Although given the title, I think we have to assume he is conscious of allusions.) also can't help wondering if Tania is a reference to Patty Hearst. All of that said, (1 of 2) 7y
See All 23 Comments
KimHM Brown seems to be revving his engine a bit, working up to some more intricate plotting (I hope) and deeper characterization. Thoughts? (2 of 2) 7y
Scurvygirl Never been, would like to visit. The first part was a fast read, very enjoyable. 7y
vivastory @KimHM I completely agree. So far the story feels familiar, but also I'm not sure where he'll go with it. It strikes me as not being overly optimistic. I find the short but chapters are also really working well for the pacing. 7y
vivastory @Scurvygirl It's a great place to visit, especially in the summer. I agree, it's a fast read. Great pacing. 7y
vivastory @Alfoster Really? Where? 7y
vivastory @Hollie It's a great place to visit in the summer. The bookstores are amazing. 7y
KimHM @vivastory Yep, I'd say we're definitely in dystopia territory here. I like the barest hint we're getting that the sib relationship will be more complex than I expected. (Oops, I forgot the #kansas before.) 7y
Alfoster Minneapolis I have such fond memories of winter when my dad would make us a skating rink in the back yard! 7y
vivastory @KimHM An interesting aspect of dystopias are looking at the end goals. Are the characters trying to overturn a corrupt government & save society or are they trying to find a way to survive in their current situation? It seems like most current dystopias are more about survival than resistance. I'm curious to see where Brown will go with this. 7y
Reggie I want to bail. I'm finding I'm asking myself more and more "who cares?" Also, does it bother anyone that Sig just happens upon a casino where an ex of is mother's is hanging out after he got deported, after he escapes detention. Idk, and now after we read about him we now know he has a sibling. Drop us some breadcrumbs man!!!!! Lol idk if I can go on. @KimHM @Vivastory #kansas 7y
KimHM Yes, @Reggie I too am troubled by the thin plotting, but I'm going to hang on at least until the siblings meet and/or they make it to the Tropic. Now that I think of it, it reminds me a bit of Goldfinch and Station Eleven. You kind of have to go with the picaresque, "on the road" logic and trust the novelist. I hope ? #kansas 7y
vivastory @Reggie I always have to suspend disbelief when I read dystopian novels. Even more "literary" novels like Station Eleven had extremely unlikely scenarios. 7y
BookishFeminist International Falls is such a perfect place to open this dystopia. I did a road trip up north when I lived in St Paul and it's very stark. I'm coincidentally reading this too right now without knowing you're doing a readalong, and I could picture it perfectly in my head. It shows in Brown's writing that he's a tech lawyer. His writing is very bare bones and unaffecting but I'm not minding it like I might in other books. 7y
vivastory @BookishFeminist I agree about his writing being unadorned, it seems to work really well for the story. It seems a lot of it is more dialogue driven. Feel free to join the readalong. We're reading two sections each week. 7y
Viji I like it so far. The short chapters and the alternating POV work well with the subject matter. Not much to do with Kansas so far 😏 #kansas 7y
Viji @vivastory, did you go to Washington High School? 7y
vivastory @Viji Only one semester. Sophomore year 95. I transferred to Park Hill afterwards. 7y
Viji That's where I went to high school! Graduated in 1980. 7y
tpixie In junior high ( wasn't called middle school then!) I went canoeing 🛶 up on the boundary waters around International Falls- on both the US & Canada sides. It was beautiful and a great experience. Hmm now that I think of it, no Passport needed!! 7y
tpixie I still can't wrap my head around Chapter 10- did Holt kill them because of the contraband tapes they were also selling? Or was he a double agent for the Government all along? @vivastory 7y

brennahawleycraig Oh no!!! The whole town?! That's crazy! 7y
KimHM Yep, the whole town is without water until late this afternoon, and that's only if bringing the system back online doesn't blow another main. #kansas 7y
BookishMarginalia Good luck! 7y

KimHM Thanks, @BookishMarginalia I'm disaster ready with gallons of drinking water, but there's a hospital here, nursing homes, etc. that is worrisome. 7y
tpixie Yikes!!🍀🍀🍀🍀cone to Hutchinson! I'll take care of you!! 7y
tpixie Of course Kansas City is closer and more fun! 7y
KimHM Thanks, @tpixie. We have our fingers crossed 😁 7y
tpixie 🍀🍀🍀 7y
Hollie Oh shit. That does not look good! #kansas for sure! 7y
vivastory Wow. Hopefully everything is back to normal soon! Good luck!! 7y
tpixie Hope your water is back??! 7y
KimHM Indeed, @tpixie , the water is back up. We'll have to boil or drink bottled through the weekend but that won't be too bad. Exciting tomes in #kansas ! 7y
tpixie Glad there's been some progress!! Boiling water- Laura Ingalls 7y

brennahawleycraig Yayyy!! We need to figure out a schedule for breaking it up! 7y
tpixie I have mine too! I've got a lot on my plate - could we wait until About August 1st to get started ? And maybe get more on board?? 7y

KimHM August 1 suits me. I think @vivastory was going to come up with a schedule. Comments on one of the earlier posts seemed like @radishandhare and @sammisho were interested, too. 7y
tpixie ( how come only one tag turned blue?) 7y

It was a Kansas-themed mail day in the house today. So excited for both my new shirt and our buddy read book! #kansas #buddyread

KimHM I'll order my copy soon, too. How formal or structured will we want to be about the reading? (I've never done a readalong.) @vivastory @tpixie @Hollie 7y
brennahawleycraig @KimHM I haven't either. Thoughts, @tpixie @vivastory @Hollie? I will say, flipping through it today, it's a lot of very short chapters. 7y
Hollie @KimHM I haven't seen the book yet, but we could break it into sections each week that we will all read so we can discuss as we go. It will be really interesting to get the KS Litten perspective on this book I think! 7y
Hollie @brennahawleycraig are those chapters such that we could break them into 3 or 4 sections. There may be a thematic way to sort the sections, im not sure how the book is set up. 7y
brennahawleycraig @Hollie it looks like there are 10 parts, each with various chapters. And then a couple of pages for an ending. 7y
vivastory @brennahawleycraig @hollie @kimhm @tpixie I'm ordering my copy tonight. It sounds like a long book, so maybe we can space it out over several weeks 7y
tpixie I'll get mine on Saturday- it's 480 pages. I'm not a fast reader , so I agree to space it out ( plus I'm in 3 book clubs) but I'm excited to do a #KansasLittens #kansas #buddyread ! @vivastory @brennahawleycraig @Hollie @KimHM (edited) 7y
tpixie @Heretherebedragons order the book for a KS buddy read! 7y
tpixie I found another Kansan! @Chelsibno here's where the info is! (edited) 7y
Chelsibno Thanks, @tpixie! (edited) 7y
tpixie @Chelsibno 😜👏🏻😜 7y
vivastory @Chelsibno Glad you're joining! 7y
Chelsibno I just submitted my ILL request for it! 7y
books_cats_art Ok, I've never really done a read-a-long online before, but the book looks so good and I love finding Kansans on Litsy! I'm ordering the book now and I'll have it in time for the lake this weekend! When does the read-a-long start? 7y
tpixie @Mvieyra4 I don't know if you'll have time with school coming up, but here's a Kansas #buddyread event we're gonna do. I bought the book on Amazon for $11. 7y
brennahawleycraig @radishandhare no official decisions yet, but august 1 got thrown out. And I haven't done one either! What lake are you going to? 7y
Hollie @JacintaMCarter @sammisho @HaveANamaste up for a Kansas buddy read in August? 7y
sammisho @hollie I am a Missouri girl! But I would still be down with that! 7y
Karen.reads @Hollie oh wow! This sounds good but I am trying to finish American War and I don't think I can do 2 dystopian novels back to back! 7y
Hollie @HaveANamaste good point. One is enough to depress you for a while! 7y
Hollie @HaveANamaste good point. One is enough to depress you for a while! 7y
books_cats_art @brennahawleycraig El Dorado! I'm in Wichita :) 7y
JacintaMCarter @Hollie Sure. I'm always up for more reading. 7y
KimHM @sammisho I'm a transplant from MO; we can be the Show-Me contingent 😄 7y

Reggie I've been stuck in a book that takes place in suburbia, with suburban people problems, so I'm gonna say yes right now cause I need a change. This sounds like what I need. Yes. 7y
Hollie Yes! That sounds like fun to me! 7y
vivastory @Reggie Wonderful! I've been eyeing this one ever since I first heard about it. Should be fun. @Hollie 7y
Heretherebedragons Yeah, that sounds like fun. I never done one before though. How does it go? 7y
vivastory @Heretherebedragons We will probably split it up over the course of several weeks. At the end of each week, we'll have an informal discussion. I'll make a reading schedule and post it 7y
Heretherebedragons @vivastory Sounds good 👍 7y
