This Is What a Librarian Looks Like
This Is What a Librarian Looks Like: A Celebration of Libraries, Communities, and Access to Information | Kyle Cassidy
39 posts | 15 read | 26 to read
In 2014, author and photographer Kyle Cassidy published a photo essay on Slate.com called "This is What A Librarian Looks Like," a montage of portraits and a tribute to librarians. Since then, Cassidy has made it his mission to remind us of how essential librarians and libraries are to our communities. His subjects are men and women of all ages, backgrounds, and personal style-from pink hair and leather jackets to button-downs and blazers. In short, not necessarily what one thinks a librarian looks like. The nearly 220 librarians photographed also share their personal thoughts on what it means to be a librarian. This is What A Librarian Looks Like also includes original essay by some of our most beloved writers, journalists, and commentators including Neil Gaiman, George R.R. Martin, Nancy Pearl, Cory Doctorow, Paula Poundstone, Amanda Palmer, Peter Sagal, Jeff VanderMeer, John Scalzi, Sara Farizan, Amy Dickinson, and others. Cassidy also profiles a handful of especially influential librarians and libraries.

I am feeling very thematic today. I didn‘t plan it this way, it just happened. Not pictured: phone case design with due date slip. And I am wearing a cardigan. #librarylife #librariansoflitsy

I didn‘t read at all this weekend because we did some major spring cleaning. However, we did take some time to go see the first screening of “Change the Subject” a documentary about a group of Dartmouth students confronting anti-immigrant sentiment in the subject headings of library catalogs. They went all the way to the Library of Congress where it ignited the immigration debate on Capitol Hill. Continued ⬇️

802Librarian Not only were the students in the film amazing, it had special meaning for me because I began my library career in the cataloging department at Dartmouth. It was also a great reminder that even though librarians are pretty open minded, we still have work to do. Words matter. 5y
Suet624 That‘s amazing. 5y

My best friend got me this book after I graduated with my first masters and decided to be a librarian instead. I love that it helps readers understand what exactly librarians do in this day and age, as well as breaking down the stereotypes of what a Librarian looks like (old, White, tightly wound, strict, conventional dress) #Librarians #LibrariansofLitsy #Libraries #Nonfiction #Recommendsday

Kaye Thank you @Cortg . Chilbury Ladies Choir was really good. That‘s great that you have Summer reading programs for adults too. Makes it more fun for everyone. 6y
Cortg I ❤️ your interest and shout out for libraries and librarians! @Kaye 6y
Kaye Yes, I don‘t think librarians always get the recognition or thanks they deserve. I thought more of them would be interested in sharing more about their job. I like visiting different libraries and seeing what all they do at each one. It‘s fascinating. (edited) 6y

Kaye I bet you have heard some stories about damaged or missing books. Someone actually owed thousands on a fine ? Wow, did they pay it ? 6y
Grrlbrarian It was a professor who retired with over 100 books still missing - and academic books can be pricey. Last I heard, he still hadn‘t paid! 😱 6y
Grrlbrarian The most interesting ‘damaged book‘ story came from a student whose car was stolen and set on fire with his library book inside. He said, “I can bring you the police report and maybe some ashes.” I removed the item from his record! 6y

I was inspired to dig up my first library card. I don‘t remember how old I was when I got it but I remember the feeling of being in that building. ❤️ In some ways I stepped in there and never left library land. I made a career of it!

PS: Neither I nor my family live at that address or even in that state anymore.

Coco That‘s so cool! I wish I had thought to hang on to my original library card 😍. I lived in a small town in Arkansas growing up and loved our tiny library! 6y
AmyG I wish I had my library card, too. I have such wonderful memories of going there. 6y

BarbaraTheBibliophage I just drove on that block of West End tonight. Did you know the Porters who lived a few houses down from you? Keri is our granddaughter‘s momma. Weird small world ... right? 6y
MarriedtoMrT @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes, small world! I don‘t remember the Porters but I‘ll ask my parents. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage We rarely go that particular way. It‘s so odd that we drove there tonight. Anyway, it would be funny if they remember the Porters. 😎 (edited) 6y

5 ⭐️Such an inspirational book. I am so thankful for my own librarians over the years who encouraged me in my pursuit of knowledge and reading, and led me to my current path of MLS. As Arthur said, “ Having fun isn‘t hard, when you‘ve got a Library card!!

It was up to page 21 I decided, " I NEED this book." Going to read ONE more chapter than wait until my Thriftbooks copy arrives and put aside this wonderful library copy . 21 pages in and it's already such an encouragement to me and affirming WHY I want to be a librarian, even in the midst of Google, Amazon, and Kindles. As one Librarian said " Impassioned Librarians are a force to be reckoned with. We have the curiosity of a scientist , ➡️

Emily92Bibliophile ➡️the work ethic of a teacher, the creativity of an artist, and the ferocity of a prize fighter. We are so much more than Google." Alea Perez, Head of Youth Services. 7y

I am visiting the Dare County Public Library on my way home from the Kill Devil Gills in the Outer Banks. It's what librarians do on vacation.

josie281 Oh! Is the power outage still going on in the OBX? 7y
Graciouswarriorprincess @josie281 yes in parts. Hatteras and Ocracoke are only open to residents. No power there. 7y

One of the librarians at my town's library branch is featured in this book!! He's head of the teen room. His book selections are outstanding, but we need to have a little conversation about his comic selections (to be fair, he's gotten a lot better!! My library was the first in the whole county system to get the latest 2 Lumberjanes volumes, what a guy) 🎉 any Littens featured in this book?

•Me: purposely leaves library card/ID behind when dropping 3 tons of books off @ library so as to not be tempted to check out more.
•Me: sees 2 books I HAVE TO GET. HAVE. TO. Realizes I left card/ID home to avoid this.
•Me: begs head librarian to let me check out books w/o ID/card ~just this once~; she is not swayed until I recite card number in front of her and tell her truth about why I don't have card or ID.
•Me: has two new library books 😇
