The Gifts of Imperfection
The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You're Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are | Brené Brown
Each day we face a barrage of images and messages from society and the media telling us who, what, and how we should be. We are led to believe that if we could only look perfect and lead perfect lives, we'd no longer feel inadequate. So most of us perform, please, and perfect, all the while thinking, What if I can't keep all of these balls in the air? Why isn't everyone else working harder and living up to my expectations? What will people think if I fail or give up? When can I stop proving myself? In The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown, PhD, a leading expert on shame, authenticity and belonging, shares what she's learned from a decade of research on the power of Wholehearted Living--a way of engaging with the world from a place of worthiness. In her ten guideposts, Brown engages our minds, hearts, and spirits as she explores how we can cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough, and to go to bed at night thinking, Yes, I am sometimes afraid, but I am also brave. And, yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable, but that doesn't change the truth that I am worthy of love and belonging.

Lots of wisdom. A book I'll revisit time and again. Some unforgettable nuggets. A little corny, but isn't self-help supposed to be? Kinda loses steam toward the end.

This is the second Brené Brown I‘ve read (after Atlas of the Heart) and I liked it enough to want my own copy. I like that the guideposts had a spectrum and that Brown emphasized that accepting yourself is not an item to check off the to-do list; it‘s an ongoing practice and some days it‘s easier than others.

Thank you for the #WondrousWednesday tag @Eggs 🤗

1ï¸âƒ£ My nudge word this year is “mindful†& I try to think it when I make choices from food to what I want to read.

2ï¸âƒ£ From the tagged book: “Let go of who you think you‘re supposed to be; embrace who you are.†I spent a lot of my younger years trying to be someone I‘m not so I find this encouraging.💜

3ï¸âƒ£ “Growth is uncomfortable because you‘ve never been here before.†(Or a variation of it) 😉

Eggs Some great advice here - I‘m #2 as well (when I was younger) - where does it come from?!? 9mo
shxriel @Eggs same here! honestly im not sure but i know that for me its mainly valuing external judgement and the feeling to need to be close to perfect which is pretty unrealistic. its all about positive self talk 9mo
Eggs @shxriel You nailed it! Our insecurities (and parental expectations) at work 9mo

This was like listening to an extended TED Talk for an audience of upper middle class professionals. The author presents us with 10 guideposts to living ‘wholeheartedly‘. Brown comes across as a smart, relatable and engaging researcher. I enjoyed listening and took away some nuggets of wisdom (especially regarding authenticity) but I‘d have liked more insight into her research and overall I felt this wasn‘t quite speaking to me.

This was fine. I see why the people who recommended it to me did so--it has lots of great advice and points and observations and suggestions. I think this author is the most successful of the "recovering career mom gurus." She's smart and sage.

I think it‘s safe to say that I got some value from this book! 😆
The 10th anniversary edition has a section for note taking and Brene encourages the reader to inhabit the book in order to integrate it into your life. So I went for it! I learnt so much. The integration into my life part will take some time and practice and probably a lot of forgetting and then revisiting. I‘m so glad I read this.
5 stars.

BookBelle84 I've read her books multiple times and use her insights daily. 13mo

I have a feeling this book is going to be life altering for me. So many people have recommended Brene Brown to me for years. I have loved quotes I have seen. I can‘t believe it took a whim when browsing my kindle yesterday to start this, the first book of hers I have actually read. Timely, powerful, resonant truth.

ChasingOm I love this one. 1y

The gifts of imperfection, ensure that you will reflect on what Dr Brene Brown has to say and think through how to take what she says and put it into practice. Excellent book. Recommend for.folks who are in need of a tune up.

I have a little bit of resistance to Beene Brown for not better reason than so many people like her, but I enjoyed this and thought there were some interesting insights here.

jimfields3 Your reason resonates with me, too! I find Brown thought-provoking, and this is in my TBR pile. Thanks for your feedback! (edited) 2y

Definitely worth a reread, and for the most part holds up really well! (Except for one anecdote at the end which screams white privilege on this read).

What I‘ve always liked about Brené Brown is her background as a research professor, and that she explains her methodologies at the end of the book. That for me puts this book more in the genre of psychology rather than self-help.

Definitely took away some new insights.

Today is a good day, and I‘m spending it revisiting an old favorite. It‘s been years since I read Brene Brown, and wanted to reconnect before delving into her latest book. Plus, i really need to hear some of her words again at this point in my life. 🥰

Love Brene Brown and her findings on the innate human desires. This book is a journey of 10 guideposts with authentic examples of living/not living the Wholehearted Life. It is information supported by the research and life experience from the lady who scientifically studies, interviews, lives and breathes these human condition questions. This info allows us to discover through reflection what is best in our own lives to living wholeheartedly.

I‘m reading this as part of a book club with my friends. It is really bothering me. I don‘t know if it‘s the repetition of gooey words like “wholeheartedness†(I can be a tad cynical) or that the ideas are hard to swallow. I‘m only on page 31, so maybe this is coming later(?), but I would love to see more of the data and hear her data-gathering methods explained clearly instead of just reading over and over “based on my work.â€

âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸ This was my first time reading Brene Brown and I‘m way behind but this book is excellent and I think it‘s aged well. It gave me a lot to think about and put into practice. There were a couple times where I would‘ve loved more examples but I appreciate that she doesn‘t waste words. I highly recommend and I‘m happy to find out she is not overrated!

Good news/bad news. Went for a walk to finish my audio book ( finished Breath ✔ï¸) but my orthotics don‘t work in my new runners 😭😭 my feet hurt so much I had to call my husband to come pick me up 🤦ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ðŸ˜† so I started this while I waited for him to come â¤ï¸ honest to god, I don‘t know what I‘d do without books

Megabooks Oh no! Glad he could pick you up! 3y
mcctrish @Megabooks yes I‘d have had to walk home barefoot 🦶🤦ðŸ»â€â™€ï¸ but I‘m so mad that my damn orthotics only fit in two pairs of runners 🤬 I get they won‘t fit in nice shoes but my runners are the same brand and size ( these new ones I ordered off the internet when we were in lockdown- they were supposed to spice up my walking life not crush it ) 3y
Megabooks I wear orthotics when exercising, and I‘ve been loathe to order new shoes for that reason! Sometimes even the same size, model, and brand just don‘t fit the same. 3y

ââââ Brené Brown has meant so much to me this year. It's a slow process; it's like I one of her books and it's so amazing, but I don't implement everything I read about right away. I think there has been a slow shift though... I hope so. Her research on what lets people live a Wholehearted life is yet another blow to the traditional Christian narrative of love your neighbour but please hate your sinful self as much as possible. Highly recommended

catsuit_mango She has a wonderful podcast started in spring called unlocking us. It makes me think so much about what we do and why 3y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @catsuit_mango I really want to listen to it, but I don't do a lot of podcasts in general and tend to forget... 3y
catsuit_mango @MommyWantsToReadHerBook i only listen to podcasts while I walk (even in place on my balcony) that s my main exercise during the pandemic and podcasts are a good company. Or maybe while you are driving? 3y

catsuit_mango @MommyWantsToReadHerBook i work from home too (even without the pandemic) hence the walking as exercise ;) 3y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @catsuit_mango yeah that would be nice. I don't have headphones right now... And I leave my phone at home when I go walking so I can't get mugged (I probably wouldn't anyway... But I'm paranoid.) 3y
