Depraved Heart
Depraved Heart: A Scarpetta Novel | Patricia Cornwell
Dr. Kay Scarpetta is working a suspicious death scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when she receives a text message with a video link that appears to be from her niece Lucy. But how can it be? Its clearly a surveillance film of Lucy taken almost twenty years ago. As Scarpetta watches she comes to grips with frightening secrets. That first clip and others sent soon after raise dangerous implications that increasingly isolate Scarpetta, leaving her confused and not knowing whom she can tellnot her FBI agent husband, Benton Wesley, or her investigative partner, Pete Marino. Not even Lucy. Cornwell launches these unforgettable characters on a psychological odyssey that includes the mysterious death of a Hollywood moguls daughter, aircraft wreckage on the bottom of the sea in the Bermuda Triangle, a grisly gift left in the back of a crime scene truck, and videos from the past that threaten to destroy Scarpettas entire world. The diabolical presence and singularly depraved heart behind what unfolds seems obviousbut not to the FBI, which begins building a case against Lucy that could send her to prison for the rest of her life Depraved Heart: "Void of social duty and fatally bent on mischief. Mayes v. People, 806 III. 306 (1883) When it comes to the forensic sciences, nobody can touch Cornwell. New York Times Book Review

A suspenseful read featuring a villain we know, Carrie Grethem. My only criticism of this book was that for me, it lacked a lot of the autopsy/medical analysis that I have so enjoyed being so detailed in previous novels, but thats just my personal taste thing and what I have come to expect from a Kay Scarpetta book. That being said, it still kept me guessing and for the last 200 pages, life as I know it was on pause until I finished it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I used to love Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series but I could not even finish this one. Could anyone live with so many enemy's who never die? A niece with more problems then some of the bad guys? A "partner" who is the very definition of misogynist? Time to move on!

As with so many Kay Scarpetta mystery/thrillers, this one gave me the willies! I love the way Patricia Cornwell writes.

A marginally better showing than the last books in the series.
Scarpetta is a not particularly lovable character. She seemed more human in the first books and now has a holier-than-thou attitude mixed with high emotions. I still want to like her. Maybe the point is to not like her.

britt_brooke Haha, ok, at first I was thinking "what is she wearing?" Then I was like "oh, that's a cat." ? It's been a looong day. 8y

DeeLew I loved the first few books so much. I just have not enjoyed the newer ones as much. 😕 Great pic though! 😊 8y
Suzze I quit reading her 4 or 5 books ago. Seemed to me like they were beginning to be slapped together. 8y
Zelma @britt_brooke me too! I immediately thougt you were wearing a fur coat inside and wondered why. 8y
britt_brooke @Zelma 😂😁👍🏻 8y
Shemac77 I know right?! It's so frustrating how a series can start so well and then become...this. @DeeLew @Suzze 8y

Late afternoon reading before a night shift in the ER. I would rather be in a cabin in the woods with a fire and beer (and books, obviously).

Samantha.1020 I really enjoyed this book! 8y
Shemac77 Oh good! I'm nervous. I want the old Scarpetta back. @Samantha.1020 8y
Samantha.1020 It is funny because I used to read series a long time ago and then just stopped. I read this one and had to go back and start at beginning again lol 8y
TheCanuckReader I almost bought that mug yesterday:) 8y
Shemac77 7$ at chapters?! It's the perfect size. I highly recommend it! @TheCanuckReader 8y
Shemac77 Did you stop because Scarpetta seemed to turn into the whiniest, most entitled snob ever? Because that's why I almost quit. And yet I secretly still love her. @Samantha.1020 8y
Samantha.1020 Actually I don't remember why I stopped reading them. Maybe because I started blogging and there were too many other books I wanted to read instead? I'm really enjoying these early ones though so I'm glad I went back to this series! 8y
Shemac77 I loved the early ones as well and have read up until this book. The last few, Scarpetta was a horrible character. But maybe she's not supposed to be a character you love. I'd be interested in your take if you read the rest in the series. @Samantha.1020 8y
Samantha.1020 Well I plan on catching up so I will definitely share :) 8y
Shemac77 I'm super curious what you think. Let me know :). Happy reading! @Samantha.1020 8y

Boy, can I relate to this! I know how to do things "the old fashioned" way, when power goes out or systems crash. It blows my mind when entire airlines are grounded nowadays because of a computer glitch with the booking software. How is it that we've lost our ability to function?

As part of #HelloOctober I decided to finally finish this book. Turns out I missed reading the previous book and this book is all about a terrible incident from the last. This book opens two months on, Kay is still recovering physically and emotionally and being Kay she's back at work. Everybody's the same, nobody communicates, Kay tries to protect everyone and feeds them pasta. This may be my last Scarpetta, now what to read ?

I am enjoying the arc of Kay's realizing first that Lucy is perhaps not just a sociopath, but also may be a dangerous sociopath; & Kay's exploration of how badly she spoiled Lucy & indulged Lucy's narcissism. Kay has avoided fully acknowledging these glaring dangers with the belief that Lucy is, when it comes to her loved ones, a weapon pointing outwards from their wagon circle. But now, Kay is facing the fact that isn't true.

I miss the old Scarpetta, who actually did her job. I miss when the gang of misfits acted like a family. I miss when everything wasn't all about Lucy and Scarpetta.

I went to Costco and my friend had to point out this book. My friend knows that I am a Kay Scarpetta fan, she knows I will buy the book, I will read the book and I will pass the book on to her. I'm going to be annoyed with Marino, I am going to be shaking my head over Lucy and I am going to be mooning over Benton. I know Kay will be a rock and sort everything out and I will probably buy the next one

The epilogue from the last book was apparently a figment of my imagination. It was never alluded to let alone explained. Overall this installment was much less annoying than the others have been. But it was basically a pointless read. Not much of anything happened.

Whether or not Sock was impacted by last book's cliffhanger will determine if I finally give up this series. Had to wait for the paperback to come out first! #sonervous
