Summer of '69 | Elin Hilderbrand

I'm keeping the summer reading light: beach reads, a royal love story and some family drama. 🙌🏼

I've finished Summer of 69 and loved all of the characters. It's a perfect beach read with family drama and a bit of history thrown in the mix. I enjoy stories where the women are strong and it's passed down through the generations. How about you?

At about halfway through and it slowed down considerably. While it has a wonderful gothic feel, it's lost my interest quickly, unfortunately.

Who else has read The Wildling Sisters? What are your thoughts?

BTW, A Ladder to the Sky was a an excellent book. I loathed the main character but the story is so good and keeps you moving along. It's worth hating him so much, haha.

It has been pretty slow going to start, which surprised me. I usually get hooked right off with Kate Morton's books but this one kept stalling until about page 120 when it finally has started to keep a decent pace.

I'm not sure what I was expecting from this, but I found the writing and the pace to be quite boring to start. I believe that set the tone for me through the rest so I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Sadly, it was just ok.

A beautifully atmospheric mystery set in the Outer Hebrides, The Lewis Man is the second book in a trilogy by Peter May. If you've read the Ann Cleeve series of Shetland books, this is similar.

I'm never a fan of covers where a book club has printed their symbol anywhere visible on the cover. All the Oprah ones have huge icons and for me it just ruins the whole look, but then, I'm probably just insanely picky. This 'signed copy' sticker threatened to leave a nasty residue so that'll be staying as well.
I'm hoping the story makes up for it. I've been waiting for the paperback to come out for this one for a while.🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Another mass school shooting, more kids dead. What is it going to take? I'm going to say it, those prayers aren't working. We need to do more. We need people to stand up and be uncomfortable so that a change can be made. I know I will be, what about you? Are our kids worth it to you?
#EnoughIsEnough

Lovesbooks87 I feel the same way enough is enough! Something needs to be done and be done quick. No one should ever have to go to school and worry about not coming home! 1y
RaimeyGallant I'm not a nationalistic type of gal, but this is one of the things I appreciate about Canada, the lack of gun culture. The U.S. is so close, an hour's drive, but so surreal. 1y
Stellina Agreed @Lovesbooks87 It's becoming so common these days and that's terrifying! 1y

Lovesbooks87 @Stellina yes it is! 1y
Stellina @RaimeyGallant That's one of the big arguments here, we do have lots of gun laws in place but it still seems so easy to access them at the same time. I feel for the younger generations having many school years ahead to have to worry about this. Thanks for your comment! 1y
RaimeyGallant @Stellina In Canada, we don't have a second amendment. It's a generalization, but there's a different attitude about guns. For one, we don't think it's our right to own one. 1y

I was excited to read this book since I grew up in the area and remember my parents being on alert and talking about the Golden State Killer (or East Area Rapist as he was known then)often. I commend Michelle McNamara for her passion which really shows in the book, but it ends up very disjointed. A lot of the info is rehashed with no new details and lots of guessing along the way. Interesting but just falls short.

I cannot wait to dive into this true crime novel! I grew up in Northern California when this guy was going around terrorizing our city and I remember clearly my mother being scared. I know for sure, the police had little to report then, so I'm more than intrigued now that the man has been arrested after decades.

He sets about tattooing the remaining four digits. When he has finished, he holds onto her arm for a moment longer than necessary, looking again into her eyes. He forces a small smile. She returns a smaller one. Her eyes dance before him, his heart seems simultaneously to stop and begin beating for the first time. He looks down at the ground and it sways beneath him. Another piece of paper is thrust at him. When he looks up again she is gone.

The Address | Fiona Davis
post image
Pickpick

4/5 Stars: The Address by Fiona Davis is a fun historical fiction read based off the famous building in New York called the Dakota. Sara is the ‘managerette‘ who falls in love with the dashing architect, Theo Camden. It switches between the 1880‘s to the 1980‘s to tell its tale. While it started off a bit slow until around 80 pages or so, it took off with a bang quickly after. I really enjoyed this one.
