A story about grief and finding your way through. At the close of Ww2, Jack loses his Mom. He and his father move to Maine from Kansas, where Jack meets Early at boarding school. Early also has experienced profound loss and has come up with a fantastic tale to help make it through. The two are soon off on a dangerous adventure looking for closure of the tale and their grief. Middle grade historical fiction. 4 stars.

I always start my day, and end my day with audiobooks. 🎧Started this one late last night, but fell asleep pretty much right away. This is another book for #NewToYou authors. ♥️ And it will also count for #StarOnTheCover for #MayScavengerHunt.

I started listening to this audiobook while doing some housework this morning. I had read the hard copy several years back, but liked the sound of the narrators voice when I sampled it so I decided to revisit the story.

Arrived 45 minutes early for the #PhillyMeetUp. If you are also early, find me on a bench in Rittenhouse Square. It's a beautiful day!

And -- one time offer only -- you're free to interrupt me while I'm reading!

My women's group meets at 10 but since the hubs is working from home today, I left an hour and a half early to read in the parking lot. He feels less guilty because I'm not home to see that he's actually sleeping and not working plus I get an hour of uninterrupted reading time. Win. Win

Varshitha I usually catch up on my sleep and some reading on my Work from home days as well😁... I make it up for them on the other days though.. 7y
rabbitprincess I used to sleep in a bit when working from home as well! But then it messed up my sleep cycle (I was working from home part-time) so I got up earlier and read for that half-hour instead 😄 7y
RiotMom lol I do this sometimes when I leave for yoga. I give myself lots of extra time to hang out and read or drive aimlessly while listening to an audiobook. Total me time. 7y

LauraBeth @Varshitha it's always so much easier to be more productive when you work from home because you're not as interrupted as much 😀 7y
LauraBeth @rabbitprincess that's brilliant! 7y
LauraBeth @RiotMom I'm bad about tacking on extra time to the real time to ensure I get me time 😀 7y

I loved this middle grade adventure so much that I bought a copy for my middle grade granddaughter. Early and Jack have a wild #journey that's #fullofadventure and great to read together! #booktober

BookInMyHands This is one of my favorite middle grade reads! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BookInMyHands I picked it up for the Read Harder challenge this year. I'm not normally a middle grade reader, but I enjoyed this enormously. 8y
brilliantglow While the book sounds fantastic, I must comment on the bust to its left. It is absolutely beautiful😍 8y

#augustofpages day 7: favorite bookish friendship. I almost chose Harry Potter, but this more recent read really struck me. I chose it as summer reading for my 7th grade. The friendship forged between Early and Jack shows two boys navigating and discovering their inner selves as well as how they relate to others and the world around them in a beautiful way. I highly recommend it! #augustphotochallenge

BarbaraTheBibliophage I loved this one and also ordered a copy for my granddaughter! 8y

This middle grade novel doesn't read like a childish book at all. It captivated me, especially in the audio presentation. Our main characters, Early Auden and Jack Baker, are both learning how to live with loss and grief. Each has their own way of managing, but somehow together they go off on an adventure and find themselves. #24in48 #readathon #readharder2016

ReadingOver50 Sounds interesting. I am trying to find audio books I can listen to with my 15 year old daughter. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage It's probably a good choice for you both. Lots to discuss! 8y
youngreadrshelf I really liked this one. Reminded me of A Prayer for Owen Meany. 8y

Reading (audio version) this one for my #ReadHarder challenge this year. It's a middle grade novel that I heard about on the podcast #WhatShouldIReadNext. So far it's great!

LibraryLily Clare Vanderpool is amazing! I actually enjoyed Moon Over Manifest better than this one. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LibraryLily I'll have to look at that one too. I'm impressed at how adult this is while still clearly in the age target. 8y

Another character with synesthesia! I wish it had been a better-known phenomenon when I was a child, so I didn't feel so alone.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Me tooooo! I didnt even know what it was until my linguistics professor brought it up. I told her - "um, I didnt know that was unusual?" She asked me to draw my alphabet and she hung it in her office. Ha! I think I was a "case study"! 8y
Melissa_D So cool, @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com! A friend read an article about it in Smithsonian Magazine when I was in college... Did you take a picture of your alphabet? I'm not sure I could do that! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I didnt take a picture ? but the funny thing is I remember drawing my alphabet all the time when I was around 6 or 7 years old and being frustrated that none of the crayons were the exact color I needed. I didnt know that not everyone saw the letter K as "terracotta with a little maroon sometimes" 8y
