#Scarathlon Daily Photo Prompt Day 11 #Dark

Both this and the first book, The Alienist, have been on my TBR for a long time. I really enjoyed the TV adaptation, so I know to expect some dark themes!

Much like its predecessor, this installment in Carr‘s Kreizler series will mostly appeal to those who love crime AND historical fiction genres. It‘s dense; full-to-bursting with details of old New York geography, architecture , cultural factoids and real people cameos. It‘s also very dark. But if you love the idea of 600+ pages spent pondering the why of a serial killer while running around an immersive replica of 1897 NYC, this book is for you.

KathyWheeler I liked The Alienist, but I loved this book. (edited) 1y
LadyCait84 @KathyWheeler Was it Stevie‘s narration that made the difference for you? It‘s hard for me to say which book I liked better, but I definitely felt like Stevie‘s POV was a big pro in favor of The Angel of Darkness. I‘m still holding onto a hope Carr will one day publish another one in the series from Sara‘s perspective. 🤞🏻 1y
KathyWheeler It was indeed Stevie‘s narration that did it for me. I keep hoping for another book as well. 1y
Bookzombie I somehow read this one first years ago. I loved it and think I may have to reread it. @KathyWheeler I also keep hoping for another book. There is an entry on Goodreads but there has never been a publication date announced. 🙁 1y

Though not as consistently fast paced as the first one and sometimes a less engrossing and immersive story, there were parts of this that I really enjoyed and, of course, it was nice to be back with these characters again. I wish there had been more of the character growth and “alienist science” that was present in the first one.

I liked this book. A lot. Where the first book is told from the perspective of John Schuyler Moore, this book is told from the perspective of a now grown Stevie Taggert. This book starts with a kidnapping being worked by Sarah Howard, who is now a PI who concentrates on helping women. This book is stunning in its navigation of sexism and the prosecution of crime in the late 19th century. Historical figures, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton 👇🏻

Ericalambbrown and Clarence Darrow, make appearances. Again, Carr‘s history knowledge adds color to the prose. Stevie‘s colloquial use of “what” in the place of “that” is unusual but easily overcome as his telling of the story begins to clip along. Interestingly, Stevie‘s memories of John Moore are far more moody and whiny than Moore‘s portrayal of himself in the first book. 😂 @Catherine_Willoughby , I loved it! 4y

Dr. Kreizler and his crew are back in action trying to solve the case of a kidnapped diplomat's daughter. They found a lot more than what they expected. This time the story is told by Stevie, Kreizler's young driver. That adds some flavor to the story. This one was just as good as The Alienist.

Took much longer than it should have for me to finish this, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very interesting take on developing crime fighting methods and thoughts about women especially mothers as killers.

I finished ‘The Alienist‘ on Netflix last night, bummed there aren‘t more seasons. This morning I happened to come across this baby at the library book sale 👏
I wouldn‘t have known about this follow-up were it not for fellow littens.
(Thanks for the tip @KathyWheeler )
Looking forward to digging into this!!

Had a rough few weeks but I did manage to finish this one. If you liked The Alienist, you‘ll love this one! Yes, it‘s longer and focuses more on the court proceedings of the early 20th century, but the story is even more twisted and we‘re reunited with all the characters of the first book. We get to know them better and are introduced to a few new ones who are just as endearing. I would‘ve read 600 more pages. Can‘t wait to get to the next one!

CouronneDhiver 👋🏽 hi! where have you been hiding? miss you! 5y

Book number 50 of my year. I just finished my last book it is currently 4:15am and since I still can‘t sleep I shall begin this thick and sexy book lol it‘s based in the early 1900s and as early as 1897 so I‘m going to put my corseted dress and my silk long gloves on and begin LMAO I‘m totally kidding but how crazy would that be 😂😂😂 😂

Caffeinated_Reader This is the greatest book I‘ve read in a while. The characters are so badass and brave. I‘m on page 80 and will take a break for today of reading as I need sleep. I bought sleeping pills so it shall be a successful rest. 🌗🌘🌑🌒🌖🌕🌚 6y
Caffeinated_Reader It‘s taken me a while to make real progress with this phenomenal tale and it‘s definitely not because it‘s not a good book! Finally the kids are back in school lol so I had more time to read. Currently on chapter 45 page 464 and my god I can‘t wait to get to the bottom of it! It‘s such a crazy story and I am cheering for justice against Libby that Evil woman. 6y
Caffeinated_Reader Omggggg that was a fucking ending! My goodness 😰 I swear I was pacing the house reading the last 5 chapters 😆 I definitely recommend this book. I love love love the characters. The ending was WILD! Man. 6y

I think I may have liked this one a little bit more than The Alienist. The story is told from Stevie's perspective this time, which was great. I wish the series would have continued, I would love a book from Sara's perspective. The case this time focused on a murderous nanny & a political kidnapping. With the story of Stevie's first Love thrown in to boot.

In the follow up to #TheAlienist, Stevie recalls the story of the group's second major case that has character twists and turns galore, a serial killer, political scandal, courtroom drama, and tons of action. I liked this installment in the Dr Laszlo Kreizler series just as much as the first.

Weekend bookhaul. 😍 The whole stack for only 11 Euros. 😎

See All 15 Comments
(Sorry.) 7y
Sarah83 @Buechersuechtling Tut mir leid. Wollte dich nicht damit belästigen. 😉 7y
Buechersuechtling Quatsch. ? 7y
Sarah83 @Buechersuechtling Dann ist ja gut 😍 7y

This book is a sequel to "The Alienist." It is often hard for second books to live up to the first, and this one, while not quite as interesting in storyline, was well done. The plot does lag in some spots, but I was kept guessing as to how they would eventually resolve the conflict.

DogMomIrene Hmmmm...I read The Alienist years ago and someone said the sequel was terrible. Never bothered with it. Now you've got me rethinking this decision, especially since you just reread The Alienist. I'm throwing it on the GR TBR🤓 7y
