4⭐️ Awww I love this novel, #PersephoneClub fellows! It reminds me so much of Emile Zola‘s The Ladies‘ Paradise, but softer tone here in Whipple‘s hand. I love the descriptions of their daily life - mornings at Chadwick‘s, the details of things in the bedroom, and the gossips! I time-travelled with this book and I enjoyed the walk in the park 😉

BarbaraBB Sounds fantastic! 1y

Brilliant Simply brilliant , Someone from a distance is hailed as Dorothy Whipples best and most popular novel, which I also devoured. However high wages is even better in my opinion. What wonderful characters, what a wonderful plot - it just ended far too soon. Many authors are compared to Jane Austen but in Whipples case it is spot on her portrayal of people is very Austenrsque.1st read of ‘23 & ahard act to follow, a great reading year ahead 🤞

I'm delighted that Jane works in a draper's shop. The book should be feeling right at home sitting on Clark, my 100-ish year old thread cabinet, found at a local thrift store. Spools (or hanks of floss) fit nicely in the slotted drawers.
If Jane has to use a treadle sewing machine, I shall very likely die of happiness.

jlhammar What a beautiful cabinet! 1y
Aimeesue @jlhammar Clark *is* rather dashing. Took me WEEKS to clean him up, though, and he does still carry the odor of, well, a garage. He spent part of his life holding tools and grubby old nails and screws and such - still had some rattling around in there, along with some pay subs from the 1930s. He's been through some stuff. But he still has his original decals! (edited) 1y
quietjenn What a wonderful thrift find! Clark would be right at home with Jane. 1y

quietjenn Hah, which is pretty much what you said in the caption. It's been a long day. 😅 1y
Aimeesue @quietjenn 😂 I‘m glad you see it too! Clark is my best thrift store find ever - he was coated in dust and grime and cobwebs, but he cleaned up beautifully. I‘m astounded that he‘s still around, tbh (edited) 1y

So glad that I got in a final #PersephonePick before closing out the year! This one was really lovely; Jane's ambition, determination, and self-advocacy radiated off the page. I wasn't feeling the romantic entanglement of the last third, but I was all about the somewhat cliffhanger ending- though could Jane end up anywhere but on top when all is said and done?? Thanks for letting me tag in, #PersephoneClub; it was a pleasure!

LeahBergen Great review! And you‘re so right; Jane will somehow triumph wherever she lands. 😄 1y
BarbaraBB You can‘t go wrong with Whipple. 1y

Finally found/made the time to sink into this #PersephoneClub book, and what an engrossing and rewarding experience it was. Whipple brings the characters and setting to vivid life with well-chosen details and clear-eyed (but not unsympathetic) prose.

I wasn‘t expecting a story about a WW1-era shopgirl, set in an industrial English town, to captivate me so immediately but it was a complete page-turner.

Will her dream of owning her own dress shop come true? Will she find love? Will she have to eat tripe again for supper? And will she discover that her margarine ration has stolen slivers missing? 😆 Yes, it was the minutiae of daily life that swept me away in this one. Loved it! #PersephoneClub

Tamra Captured perfectly! Yes, the minutia of each day makes a life. 💕 1y

Compelling read! I was unsettled about Jane‘s future in the beginning and that did not change in the end. Dorothy did a great job capturing the uncertainties of life. #persephoneclub

@CarolynM @Cathythoughts @LeahBergen @elkeOriginal @rubyslippersreads @quietjenn @andrew61 @jlhammar @Gissy @Aimeesue @willaful

Tamra I was taken by the scene in which Jane is exhilarated by finally being alone. She is captain of her own ship! I hated to see her give it up for a relationship she knew was fated to be the source of remorse. Dorothy conveys how we are susceptible to the irrational power of love, even when it is not in our best interests (Maggie, Lilly, & Jane). (edited) 1y
elkeOriginal @Tamra RE: your spoiler comment = EXACTLY! Exhilarated, then sad = me 1y
Cathythoughts I was worried about her selling up and moving to London .. but I think it was a courageous and wise decision. I hope Lily‘s husband stayed on the straight and narrow. I‘m sure Jane and Mrs. Briggs will stay close. Also , I hope ( and believe) Jane will find love again in her life ,and in a way that is free and works. I wonder how Maggie faired out ? Great characters ❤️ 1y
See All 12 Comments
Tamra @Cathythoughts oh yes - I meant Lily, but I guess it really applies to all 3! I agree in the end it was the right decision, but I was disappointed initially when she was going to sell and run away with Noel. (edited) 1y
Tamra @Cathythoughts no doubt Jane will be okay - she‘s a highly resourceful character! 💪🏾 😁 1y
LeahBergen Ooo, I can‘t wait to peek under the spoilers. 😆 1y
Cathythoughts I think she is a highly resourceful character too. I hope she will find love in her life. Her business will flourish 💫 1y
Tamra @LeahBergen 😂 it‘s like having presents to open! 🎁 1y
LeahBergen @Tamra @elkeOriginal @Cathythoughts I was SO sad when she was selling her little shop! I feel that she‘ll definitely make a go of it in London, though, and I also thought that she and Wilfred might eventually get together (especially after that bit where she calls him her best friend). I also wondered what happened to Maggie! I was surprised that she remained so unforgiving. 1y
elkeOriginal @LeahBergen Giving up the shop made me so sad. After all her progress & independence that decision was disappointing. I loved the book so much until that point! We can assume she will be fine, but that will happen offscreen - I want to SEE her happy ending 🙁 1y
rubyslippersreads I hated to see Jane give up her lovely shop, but I think she needs new worlds to conquer. Maybe she‘ll even have jobs for some of her former employees. And I ❤️ Mrs. Briggs. 1y
Tamra @rubyslippersreads I loved her character too! ❤️ 1y

I was engaged with this story from the very beginning to the end. An absolute delight of a book. I loved the small town setting and the characters. I also loved the drapery , the clothes, and the beginning of the ready made dresses and blouses. Books and clothes are two of my favourite things 👌🏻#PersephoneClub

LeahBergen Lovely review and I feel just the same! I‘m looking forward to finishing it. 😊 1y

andrew61 Great review Cathy. I really enjoyed this one, although I have liked them all this year. 1y
elkeOriginal I agree the clothes, the shop life, the history, were all extremely engaging. The end pages felt disconnected from that base story for me. I loved all that came before though! 1y

rubyslippersreads I‘m loving this so far. 1y

This is another one of those Persephone books where the author has made a captivating reading experience out of a lot of very small incidents of daily life (until the last 50 pages where the drama ramped up a bit). Very enjoyable. Spoiler comment below for those who‘ve finished.
#PersephoneClub

CarolynM I liked the ambiguous ending, but it‘s left me feeling a bit sad. I don‘t think Wilfred is destined for happiness. Either Jane will be ok without him, or if she “settles” for him I can‘t see it going well. 1y
Tamra @CarolynM I agree! I need to post my review, but I‘m left unsettled, but not in a negative way. 1y
Cathythoughts Yes it left me feeling a bit sad too. I think Jane and Wilfred will be firm friends, and I think Jane will find love again with someone else. @Tamra 1y

LeahBergen I‘ll come back to this when I‘ve finished 👏 1y
elkeOriginal I agree about the end. I found it disappointing and the shift in the last pages did not fit with the rest of the book for me. 1y

#persephoneclub has been one of the highlights of my rdg yr discovering wonderful stories decades after their creation. This is a perfect example, a story of a shop girl ,Jane Carter ,who arrives in a northern town in 1912 .The position she takes in a small shop shows how workers are treated in that time, but it then shows that with ambition such a yng woman can blossom into her own career. It's also a love story lost + unrequited. Roll on feb23

Tamra I really enjoyed it too - it was bittersweet. 1y

He decided anew every Sunday morning to stand , but not quite upright, leaning on the rail; a compromise of a position out of which he could slip into a seat if Mrs. Greenwood should look round. He was always extremely worried until the vicar had settled himself into his stall.

Well that says it all ! The worry he put himself through over what others thought and the effect on his livelihood and position. High wages indeed #PersephoneClub

Hello! I was mulling over how to do our voting order and decided to just go alphabetically (by Litsy user name). We have 11 members so it looks like we‘ll be covering most of 2024 now. 😆

Here‘s our order: @Aimeesue @andrew61 @CarolynM @Cathythoughts @elkeOriginal @Gissy @jlhammar @LeahBergen @quietjenn @rubyslippersreads @willaful

@Aimeesue and @andrew61 : Please make a post with 2 Persephone books for us to vote on for February & April. 👇

LeahBergen Once we have those votes in, I‘ll get the next two members to post their choices. This should eliminate too much overlap of book choices. 1y
LeahBergen As a reminder: we read a Persephone book every two months (February, April, June, August, October, and December). 1y
CarolynM Wow, planning into 2024! Looking forward to seeing everyone‘s choices🙂 1y

andrew61 I'm sorry leah, do you want me to suggest 2 books as possible reads for feb/April 2023 and then there will be a vote ? 1y
jlhammar Great plan! Thanks so much. 1y
LeahBergen @andrew61 Oh, sorry! I had just assumed that you saw how our voting went last year 😆. @aimeesue is suggesting 2 books for February and you will be suggesting 2 books for April. Make a post showing your two choices and the group will vote. The one with the higher amount of votes will be our read for that month. 1y
LeahBergen @Karons1 Ooo, lucky you! High Wages is actually our group for this month. It‘s a casual buddy read; just comment and chat on other‘s posts about the book. Did you want to “join” the club (ie; be added to our alphabetical list to offer up suggestions and vote on our picks)? Or did you just want to casually read along with us whenever a title takes your fancy? Either is completely fine! 1y
LeahBergen @Aimeesue @andrew61 Oh, and just to complicate matters 😉… I should have said that your suggestion posts should be posted now (well, whenever you narrow down your choices). Please tag only the people in the above list (and me) for voting and use our hashtag #PersephoneClub. 😊 1y

rubyslippersreads What @elkeOriginal said. 😊 Looking forward to another Persephone year. 1y
LeahBergen @Gissy Yes, I have to order these, too, and they sometimes take over 3 weeks to reach me here in Canada as well! As soon as I see how many people we have I‘ll arrange us in order and get everyone to post their two choices for us to vote on. I‘ll probably do this in batches so that we don‘t all choose the same books to vote on. LeahBergen @Tamra 😆 Perfect! 1y
elkeOriginal Is this the complete list of what the club has read so far? I want to make a list for reference and I can‘t remember when it started… 1y
elkeOriginal I read this one a couple of years ago and feel so stressed by my TBR that rereads are an indulgence…because it is Whipple though I will pull it off the shelf and see if it might be worth revisiting - or at least refresh myself so I can chat without saying anything too stupid 😉 1y
LeahBergen @elkeOriginal Haha! I have that same “bursting at the seams” TBR and don‘t reread very often either. And yes, this is the complete list from when we started. 👍 1y
CarolynM I‘ll get my copy out as soon as I finish my current read (which I am loving to death and want to recommend to everyone @Centique ) 1y
Centique @CarolynM oh that makes me so happy! 😘 1y
LeahBergen @CarolynM @Centique Well, I‘m off to check it out right now! 1y
LeahBergen @Karons1 This is what we read together in the past year. So you‘re right on time for High Wages! 😊 1y
LeahBergen @Gissy Here‘s our list of what we‘ve read together as a group. 👍 1y

My library order came in for #persephoneclub + I was on the tram to work today so was especially excited to find myself journeying through Victoria Station 110 years after the wonderful Jane Carter arrives for a wander around the streets of the metropolis incl visiting Kendals (still there). This description of the industrial landscape is excellent but what I am loving is the flow of the writing and characters. Looking fwd to seeing your thoughts

quietjenn Oh, what wonderful timing! Can't wait to get started. 1y
LeahBergen Yay! I‘m excited for this one. 👏👏 1y

This lovely book was published in 1930 and has lost none of its charm. I will admit I got lost a few times when they talked about certain fashion items (‘gaberdine‘?) but overall a nice story about a young womans struggle to make her own way in the world.

Also loooooved the bookstore, Persephone Books ♥️

Huzzah!!! I am so very delighted that the books I bought at @johnsandoebooks have arrived! And just in time for a reading Sunday. These are my first Persephone books, so I am a complete novice. Which one to tackle first?! Help, dear Littens!

LeahBergen Oh, The Diary of a Provincial Lady! (if you‘re feeling like a bit of silly fun). I have this Ariel, too - the cover! 😍😍😍 5y
HardcoverHearts Perfect!! Thanks, @LeahBergen ! 5y

Found a Persephone stash at Art and Artisan Books in Bishop's Castle. Two recommended by the owner, one recommended by a fellow peruser.

When your local used bookstore scores a bunch of Persephones.... much internal shrieking and glee ensue.

LeahBergen Lucky you!! I have a few of these. What is the title of the one on the right? I loved the FH Burnett book. 💗 7y
rubyslippersreads What a great find! 😍😍😍 7y
Jess_Read_This @LeahBergen I was in shock when I saw them. The one on the right is The Priory by Dorothy Whipple (and it's a larger one too!) A few still had their bookmarks and one had postcards from the Persephone store w a message from an Oct 2008 trip the former owner took. 7y

Jess_Read_This @rubyslippersreads Thank you! I am still in a state of shock over it! 7y
LeahBergen Oh, The Priory is so good!! I found ONE at a big book sale last year and was super-excited. This is just awesome! 7y
Jess_Read_This @LeahBergen ohh!! I'm so glad to hear a good recommendation for The Priory! I am not that familiar with it and am glad to hear good things. 7y
LeahBergen It was the first of that author's books that I read ... and then I had to buy a few more. 😀 7y
quirkyreader Lucky you for this major score. The F.H.B is an especially good score because it was such a great story. (edited) 7y

#bookmail Today the Biannually arrived with the bookmark from Madame Solario. I'll send for the latest catalogue in the spring when the latest tittles get printed. #Persephonebooks

LeahBergen I got mine, too! ❤️ 7y
rubyslippersreads @LeahBergen are the Biannually and the catalog two separate things? 7y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Yes, they are. The catalogue lists and gives a nice synopsis of all their books and is only published once a year, I believe. You have to send them an email to request it, though (it's worth it!) 7y
