How‘s everyone coming along? I stayed up late last night and got a fair amount of reading done. Slept in this morning and feel refreshed and ready to spend all day with my head in a book! Except I‘m hungry so maybe a bowl of cereal first. Happy reading! #24in48

Loved this one! My first from @Pronounced_ing and a big winner. I wrote a little more personally about it on goodreads (link below) but the tl;dr version is that it really hit home for me and I‘ve once again experienced that feeling as though perhaps some unseen forces compelled you to pick up a certain book at a certain time in your life. (That‘s not just me, is it? haha)🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I just had to stop for about 15 minutes and reflect on these two paragraphs and how freaking *perfect* they are, how perfectly they relate back to the title of the book, and how they encapsulate everything that terrified me about adulthood when I was young. I thought you had to sacrifice what‘s inside you to live a normal adult life. Thank goodness I embraced my inner rebel before I got completely brainwashed lol. Can‘t imagine living like this.

I‘ve had this on my kindle forever. It‘s not a particularly uplifting collection, though it‘s not really sad either? Beautifully written collection of short stories featuring some really lonely people who end up connecting with other really lonely people. This was my first van Booy and I‘ll definitely read more of his work.

Outstanding. I always try to lower my expectations when a book seems to be universally loved (skeptic at heart and all) but it wasn‘t necessary here. Everyone should read this vitally important, engaging, enraging, and at times downright hilarious book.

you guys, I DID THE THING! I will forever be envious of those who get to read House of Leaves for the first time. what an adventure! terrifying, funny, infuriating, and just gorgeous. definitely in my top 3 favorite books of all time, and MAYBE the #1 spot after I cogitate a few days (weeks). this will stick with me forever. “Of course, real horror does not depend upon the melodrama of shadows or even the conspiracies of night.” 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

UPDATE I fell asleep watching TV earlier (thanks to the dulcet tones of David Attenborough) but only for a couple of hours, and I cannot put this book down now. Right at 9 hours of reading time for #24in48, 7 of which I‘ve devoted to this book. I am so hooked. Also may never sleep again? I may not reach 24 hours of reading but I bet I get close.

UPDATE Lap 2 is how much time I just spent on House of Leaves without even looking up omg 😮 Gonna take a TV break in about an hour to watch Blue Planet II and after that I may be up all night with this one. ninjypants @mcipher It‘s definitely SUPER creepy and I believe it‘s going to get more so. Hard to explain, but it really gets in your head and takes over, if that makes sense. Definitely requires your full attention and maximum brain power because of cross-references and footnotes and such. 6y

Pickpick

Finished this morning after an extended hiatus and am so glad I picked it back up again. Feminism is complicated, and I appreciated how honest Roxane Gay was about competing interests and her own difficulties in finding a balance. She labels herself a “bad feminist,” but I think she sells herself short. She struggles with it, just like the rest of us, and if she‘s a bad feminist, well, then so am I. Aren‘t we all? We can always, always improve.

TheWhiteHatter My wife @GypsyKat just finished the audiobook of this and really liked it. I am looking foward to reading it. I totally agree with you, we can all do better. 6y
ninjypants @TheWhiteHatter @GypsyKat I flagged a ton of pages because I know I‘ll come back to it again someday. Obviously some essays resonated with me more than others, but I didn‘t dislike any of them. 6y

Well, hmm. I was SO into this book & its poignant portrayal of teen angst & first love & wanting so much more out of life... until the plot twist. I had a suspicion about the mom but as I got closer and closer to the end I kept thinking I must've been wrong because SURELY it's too late in this story to introduce a Munchausen by proxy element, RIGHT?! Alas. That really took me out of the story. 🌟🌟🌟🌟bc the first 2/3 of the book is just precious.

sprainedbrain I thought the same thing... it seemed too late for that twist, but I still enjoyed the book. 😃 7y
ninjypants @sprainedbrain I kinda wish she had just found out organically that she wasn't sick. I felt like the mom deserved more development if she was going to play that big a role in the story, you know? Anyway I still really enjoyed it too! 7y

Panpan

Finally finished this two nights ago and meh. Meh. MEH. I had a ton of (mostly negative) thoughts about it, so many that for a minute I considered starting a blog just so I could write about this book lol. I didn't, but if you'd like to read my Goodreads review, here's the link: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1988572872

Brenley I have not read the book. It's on my list because I teach high school and my students are going crazy over watching the show. My goal this summer is to dig into it and watch the show to be able to have a conversation with the students about it. I'd be interested to see if suicide is portrayed in the same way as the book. Thanks for the review- very helpful 7y
Purrfectpages The show was just so much better than the book. I almost didn't watch it bc I found the book to be blah, like you. 7y
ninjypants @Brenley @Purrfectpages I'm about halfway through the show now and it is so much more entertaining, so to speak. My daughter kept telling me to ditch the book and just watch the show! She was right but I wanted to finish the book anyway. 7y
Onceuponatime I just read your full review on Goodreads, and I agree with you 100%. That was a great review. You articulated all of the issues I kept bringing up to my husband while we watched the show...suspension of disbelief didn't work for me with this one. I just never bought it...starting with the "malicious" nature of her suicide. No way 7y

Wrapping up this bittersweet memoir tonight on audio. So glad I chose to listen to it; it's so good to hear her voice. I know some were turned off by her journal entries, but I found them to be so poignant, especially as read by her daughter. Carrie Fisher was an absolute treasure. I feel like she kind of meant this as a farewell book, or at least it seems that way now. She references her own passing so often it's eerie. Teared up more than once.
