I don't believe any of these short stories on Amazon are on Litsy yet - but I've read the first 3 in this Getaway series and have enjoyed them! Nothing I have in ebook format sounds good to me, so I keep turning to these short stories when I need something to read on my phone.
I seem to have a short attention span lately...and have a hard time committing to a regular sized book. These have been a perfect solution! It's a bonus that they are free.

Ladder of Years | Anne Tyler

I like how Anne Tyler writes, I like her style. This is the story of a 40 yr old woman who has reached that time in her life when she feels unseen, underappreciated, that life has somehow turned out in a way that was unexpected. Oh the turmoil of being middle aged. Wanting things to be different and not knowing if it's possible, necessary, or if you should stay in your lane and do what is expected until your time is done.

This was hard to keep going back to. There is humor throughout, but a very dry kind. Like the paragraph up above (which did make me laugh).
The back of the book has a review that states "An addictive, sprawling epic; I wolfed it down."
This review mocked me every time I forced myself to pick it back up so I could finally finish it.
I'm done. I finished it. I feel tired now. ?

The last sentence of the book made me yell out loud..ugghhh ?‍♀️

Such a great book. Very emotional and just an all around great story. I loved how the story was laid out and there are some really amazing characters in here.
My 3rd 5 star rating this year. 3 out of 126 books. I don't give them out lightly. This deserved it!

I do think I'm going to set aside reading for a bit to concentrate on other tasks that need to get accomplished this month. This was a nice way to end things.

Do you ever go about your day, doing what needs done, and keep having that nagging thought "I want to get back to that show I was watching and finish it. It's so good." Then you remember that wasn't a show you were watching, it was the book you are reading.
Laini Taylor is exceptional at what she does. The story so well written it plays out like movie within your brain. It is a complicated, magical, and beautiful place to be. ?

Eh. This was a so-so reading experience. On one hand, it was tragically informative. I've never read a book about the famine in Ireland in the 1800's. My paternal grandfather was full Irish, so knowing that we have ancestors that suffered so greatly is saddening.
I didn't really enjoy the story. There aren't too many characters that I liked. Hard times bring out the worst in people I suppose. The ending was much too abrupt.

This was a good read for me. I really like the idea of setting up a challenge of purging my home of everything we don't use or need. I also hate how social media encourages mindless spending. We tend to eat, drink, and spend when we aren't happy with ourselves. Becoming a mindful consumer is an exciting idea, and one that I plan on implementing. I hope to find more books that will inspire this change in my life.

Easily the best book I've read this year. That ENDING! Oh my goodness!
I can't give it 5 stars because of how long it took me to get into it. Still a 4.5 star rating because wow. The most amazing reading experience I've had in a long time..it more than made up for how long it took me to get used to such a complicated world.

Great book to read when you need something that is easy and leaves you feeling good about the world. I liked that the characters were all different ages and had different backgrounds and personalities. Yet they all complimented each other. Their lives each improved after the notebook ended up in their possession. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Nope. Did not enjoy this one. I've been looking forward to getting my hands on it for a while now. It has a 4.29 star rating on Goodreads..and so many 5 star reviews I just knew I would love it.
Did not happen. I had to get through over 3/4 of this book before I didn't have to force myself to read it. At 80% I finally got interested in what was happening. By the end I was mostly just glad it was over. I did like the ending, so that's good.

Texreader Oh dear. It‘s on my tbr list but I keep reading reviews similar to yours. I was not a big fan of All the Light we Cannot See, it was just ok to me. So now I‘m really wondering whether I want to invest in this book. 5mo
ItsAnotherJen @Texreader If I had to do it over again, I would not of taken this journey. 😅 It is over 650 pages, multiple points of view, jumps around in time, and is generally pretty boring until the end. I thought it was going to be a beautiful life enhancing read. It was not that for me. 5mo

Unpopular opinion, but I think this one is much better than the first! I loved how the main character's world expanded as we learned more about her. New and interesting characters are introduced. New powers are discovered. It's been a long time since I rated a book with 5 stars, but I'm considering it with this book. It has all the elements that I love. Definitely hard to put down.

This would be a great book to read around Halloween! Plenty of creepy and rather scary elements in this one. A 14 year old girl may be possessed by a demon (or perhaps is schizophrenic who knows) and the family decides to have a TV show taped in their home showing her behaviors and filming the exorcism. We see much of this through her 8 yr sister's point of view.

This series is so good! It is fascinating to read about what these midwives accomplished in the 1950s-60s in London's East End slums. I'm astonished at the bravery and strength that these women have. Not only the midwives (which I love, each one is so unique and interesting in their own ways) but the women who gave birth under alarming conditions. Women are amazing.

This book is in the same vein as "A Man Called Ove" but with notable differences. I really enjoyed this story of an 84 yr old man and his life's journey. Loneliness becomes a part of daily life, he has noone but his cat. He's lost loved ones, becoming disconnected from the world and not really wanting to change that. He's accepted it. Life has a funny way of messing that up for him. He finds friendships, love, community. He starts to live again. ❤

A party. Crowded. In a mansion on a beach. So many people. Each with a story of their own.
How did they come to be at this party, on this particular night?
How and why was the fire going to start? Who was going to survive the night?

Reid puts together a great story. Knowing about the fire from the beginning makes it feel like you are watching a car crash before your eyes. You don't want to see anyone get hurt, but you can't look away.

Calling all podcast lovers-
What are your favorite book podcasts? Which ones are you addicted to? Which would you highly recommend checking out?
I'm currently only listening to two podcasts religiously, neither one are about books. Although one of my current reads (The Lords of Discipline) is Monica's favorite book of all time (Monica from the ArmChair Expert podcast).
I'd like to start listening to a podcast all about my favorite past time.

Kimberlone Overdue podcast is my favorite book podcast, have been listening for years. They have a huge back catalog of episodes so you can run through books you‘ve already read. My favorites are the special episodes they‘ve done on the 50 Shades series. So funny! 8mo
Magpiegem I listen to a lot of the book riot podcasts. They have different one for different genres as well as some broader ones, one about books out that week (that‘s my favourite) and a recommendation one. 8mo

Interesting book on how to deal with your inner voice and manage the anxiety that comes from being your own worst critic. I rate self-help books by how much new practical information I learn from it. A lot of them tend to repeat common knowledge. Or are fluff and you learn nothing other than the author is self-righteous and kind of annoying. This one is actually useful. For example- talk to yourself in third person. Sounds funny, but works!

Mary Stone has quite the fan base. I've never read one of her books, and while this is the first in the Autumn series it seems like you need to read the Winter series to really get into this. I couldn't get past the Autumn and Winter names being just a 'coincidence'. Not a big murder mystery fan. It was an okay read. I liked the psychological insight into the minds of the serial killers. Pickpick

A fun and easy read - a romance between a bookstore owner and a woman who is an author. Two book loving women who find love unexpectedly. All the characters were so likeable! I have been reading some really heavy and/or emotional books so this was exactly the way to "cleanse the palate" and give my heartstrings some relief.

Brooke_H I got this one last month as Amazon‘s free kindle book, but haven‘t read it yet. I‘m glad it‘s a good one! 10mo
ItsAnotherJen @Brooke_H That's exactly how I came across it as well. Hope that you also enjoy it! 10mo
