This has been on my TBR for quite a while; admittedly, recent events bumped this up the list. The last couple of months, I‘ve been amazed at my own lack of awareness and perspective on the topics of #systemicracism & #policebrutality. Stories like this one serve a very important purpose to #educate people and highlight the corruption. While this story did not have the ultimate desired outcome, I have faith that a real change will come. It has to.

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz. In memory of those who are no longer able to be heard I read the above book. Eva Mosez Kor passed away this July, in Poland, where she was guiding a group. How telling that she died in Auschwitz, the place she survived but her parents & 2 older sisters were killed.

Cinfhen It‘s really sad @Suet624 she was 85 and it was quite unexpected 😭😭😭 @4thhouseontheleft almost all survivors are now over 80 years old, most are in their 90‘s by 2030 they expect no more will be living 💔 4y

Butterfinger What? She actually died there recently? That to me seems horrific. But then I think of her courage to revisit and teach others. So I'm not sure if it's horrible or ironic or sort of poetic. 4y

Cinfhen Thank you @Megabooks 😘♥️ yes @Butterfinger I agree poetic seems like the right choice of words. She returned to Auschwitz a free woman, with children and grandchildren having defeated Mengele but ultimately died in the same place where she lost her family. It happened ironically on July 4, Independence Day💔 4y

Cinfhen I‘m still thinking how does a 10 year old survive without any family left except for her twin sister @Librarybelle and yet she had the brawn & bravery to do just that!!! 4y

alisiakae One reason (I have multiple) that I hardly ever read Holocaust fiction is that 99% of the time, it is not written by a Jewish author. And I do feel that this has never been talked about on a broad scale. And, by and large, the only time you ever see a Jewish fictional character is in Holocaust fiction. And, while survivors are still around, I think it so important to read their words and experiences over fictional retellings. #OwnVoices 4y

Cinfhen I never really thought about #OwnVoices in regard to Holocaust fiction until recently @4thhouseontheleft I truly waiver but in the end I think I‘m still grateful that people are reading anything related to the Holocaust and whatever they glean from those books are more than they knew before. However, I understand the importance of #OwnVoices as plenty dispute the Holocaust and only see it as a “fictionalized” event. A survivor bares witness 4y

CoffeeAndABook Hi Cindy, thank you for providing that link. My husband and I watched the documentary last night. It was heartbreaking and sickening and so important to see. I‘m grateful and in awe that survivors can bear to return to such a place of unspeakable horrors to tell their story 💔 It feels like it‘s never been more essential (in my lifetime at least) for survivors to be heard. 4y

Suet624 Thank you for the link. I have read in depth about the Holocaust since I was 13 years old. I have never understood how people could be so removed from what they were doing and so horrific in their actions. It‘s still beyond me. 4y
