She knows more about bats, snakes, plagues, and death than any other nine-year-old I know. ☠️ She also loves babies & kittens and has invented a hilarious persona of a snarky old woman, named Auntie Mia, who calls everyone “Dearie.” She‘s a complex individual. 😆 4y

I‘m loving this history timeline picture book. It‘s told from the perspective of a boy who finds history boring, so his teacher gives him a magical notebook that transports him to different times in the past. There are interesting facts and profiles of famous people and it is, refreshingly, not a whitewashed version of history. And the illustrations are beautiful!

This year, on the first day of homeschool, my older girls woke up to a letter from the esteemed headmistress (baby Clara) of S‘Moores School of Innovation & Inquiry, inviting them to enter the parallel world of a boarding school where “magic is in the mind.” They were each placed in a house named for a famous woman innovator (Grace Hopper & Temple Grandin) and began their journey of imaginative exploration for a new school year. 👇

saresmoore They each designed a house crest and came up with a motto based on the qualities they share with the remarkable woman for whom their designated house was named. Two things are clear: Harry Potter informs our family mythos and I have a lot of fun with homeschool... maybe too much. 😆 4y

My kids are learning a lot AND the books are well-written and intriguing on their own—sort of a different take on “science fiction”.

I‘m finding inspiration in the kids‘ library as I lesson plan for our Ancient Egypt unit. If I get bored, I‘ll just stage a Lego dragon war. To be honest, I‘ll probably (definitely) do that, anyway. #schoolofsmoores

They have freedom to learn through play, run outside, explore the actual world around them, follow their learning passions, learn more practical life skills, and get much more intentional/valuable time with fellow kids and adults alike! School tended to squelch their imaginations and joy for learning and they were tired all the time. Now, they are energetic and happy, eager to learn and try things. 6y

saresmoore @LauraBeth We don‘t have quite the same level of book access via the county system and the books don‘t get replaced very often, but the atmosphere is quite peaceful (when it‘s not toddler story time). We like it a lot and there‘s a VERY tempting book sale coming up in March... 6y
