This is a non-fiction story about a woman and her husband who spend their spare time rowing/kayaking in the high latitudes near the arctic circle. In their day jobs they are avalanche experts in Alaska. Some really interesting information about kayaking and avalanches. I can say without a doubt that while her experiences sound fascinating, I would not want to trade places and row for 10 hours straight in icy water.

This was my December Double #BookSpin, but I‘m going to have to pick this one up another time. I don‘t want to mark it as DNF. I don‘t wanna ruin its stats. It‘s definitely me, not the book. Happy New Year, everyone! Happy Reading in 2024! Thank you for hosting again, Sarah!

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Sometimes it's just not the right time for a book!! 3mo

Night Without End | Alistair MacLean
Pickpick

This has many elements that make it a good Alistair MacLean thriller. A plane crash, hostile terrain, a medical man for a protagonist, a closed circle of suspects. I was shivering with cold just reading it. Most of the characters had a chance to play a key role in the story, even the women (as much as is possible in these older thrillers). It‘s not top of my list for favourite MacLeans, but it‘s definitely just outside the podium.

I love when one book brings you to another. Collapse has a chapter on the Greenland Norse (the book is about why societies fail or survive), and then I realized Cold Earth is about archaeologists in a Viking settlement in Greenland. So I had to bump it up the list. Both books from my shelves, and Collapse was sent to me on an early book swap here - apologies I can't remember who sent it, but thank you.

JamieArc I read Cold Earth earlier this year. It was my first Moss book and I really enjoyed it. Understated and atmospheric - my favorite elements to have in fiction. 5mo
rachaich Cold Earth was brilliant, as are all of her books, though they are all vastly different:) 5mo
Hooked_on_books I love a good fiction/NF pairing! 5mo

This book looks first at the explorations across the land mass of #Greenland, then at the scientific studies of the ice, which have led to some major understandings and more questions about climate change. Really interesting, sobering read. (Bindi doesn‘t want to talk about it.)

A plane crashes near an ice station on #Greenland. It appears that there is a murderer on the plane, and this puts the survivors and those at the Ice Station at great risk. A life-risking fast moving adventure across the frozen wasteland of Greenland ensues in this high suspense book. Written a long time ago but still is an excellent read.

My #Greenland pick for #ReadingtheAmericas2023: not actually much Greenland but a really captivating story about an ecojustice activist in the near future who charms her way onto an Atlantic herring fisher to follow the migrating and threatened terns en route to the Antarctic. A painful backstory and a very diverse crew, with a bit of a nod to Moby Dick, kept me engaged, as well as the sheer passion for saving any bit of Earth's life.

BarbaraBB I loved this book so much 5mo

Well, I was very curious about this book but I am kind of disapponted. First, the cover is awful. Second, the translation isn't very good. But it was published in the 80s.
I really want to live in Thule but the women-man role and stereotypes was very black and white. However, this is a first part of a trilogy and as I read it is better in the end but I will not read it.

A solid 3/5.

The crime plot was interesting enough, but what I really liked in this book is all the information given about Greenland, the Inuits, their culture, and history. First book with Qaanaaq Adriensen, I'll be sure to read the others.

My book somewhat suffered from the salt and sand at the beach 🏖️

PS: Mo Malø is French, his family is from Saint-Malo.
