Hey #IDLR #BuddyReaders. The second book in the series for February is Glory In Death. We will be having two check points this time instead of the chapter a day. The first 10 chapters on February 15th and the rest on February 29. Remember, this series contains lots of triggers for certain readers. Please join us and let us know if you would like to be added to this #BuddyRead. @StayCurious or me @LiseWorks

I can‘t believe I didn‘t read this book before now; I loved it! Adunni is such a wonderful MC, naïve to the ways of the world (and how evil people can be) but also wise beyond her years.

Like my fellow #buddyreaders I can‘t believe that this kind of treatment of women is still allowed and accepted in this day and age. ? Going to read back through spoiler tags now…!

#loudbuddyread

squirrelbrain Fun fact: I noticed that, in her acknowledgments, the first person the author thanked was Felicity Blunt, who is an agent at Curtis Brown (the black-owned publishing house for #booked2022) and also sister of Emily and wife of the lovely Stanley Tucci! 2y
Cinfhen Oh, that‘s such a cool fact!!! Thanks for sharing 😘 and so glad you loved this one too!!! 2y
Cinfhen Great graphics 🥰 2y

RaeLovesToRead I'm only on page 90... you guys are so speedy!!!! Will try to finish in next couple of days and then I'll look back and comment 😊 2y
squirrelbrain I‘m having a reading day today @RaeLovesToRead after working the weekend, so that‘s how I finished it so quickly. Savour it and enjoy it - don‘t feel rushed! 2y
RaeLovesToRead It's really readable, I'm just a very slow reader. (Takes me hours to read 100 pages!) I've got a couple of hours now so I'll make myself a cuppa and settle down to it 😊 2y
TrishB Aww, I felt like that too! Why did I leave it so long. Hands down, most successful buddy read 😁 2y
TrishB That I‘ve been part of! 2y
squirrelbrain Success! 🥳 @TrishB 2y

Betty: A novel | Tiffany McDaniel
post image
Pickpick

Daisy Johnson‘s blurb on the front of this book says she was ‘consumed‘ by it, and that‘s exactly how I felt. It is a heartbreaking tale of growing up in a broken, dysfunctional family; very difficult to read but equally as difficult to put down.

Whilst ostensibly a tale about the titular Betty, it reads as a love story to her father Landon. Spoilers below for my fellow #buddyreaders who haven‘t finished yet.

#booked2021 #appalachiannoir

squirrelbrain @cinfhen commented early on that this read like a memoir and, whilst billed as a novel, I would say from the bonus content at the end that 90% of it must be true. Makes it even more heartbreaking. 💔 (edited) 3y
Cinfhen I agree, Helen!!! Wonderful review 3y

Cinfhen Right, Betty gets in the car with Fielding Bliss at the end of the novel?!?? 3y
squirrelbrain No I haven‘t read that one @Cinfhen - it‘s definitely on my list now though. Yep, that‘s the end of the novel and then there‘s a section called ‘Behind Betty‘. 3y
Caroline2 Great review. Stacked. 😉 3y
Reviewsbylola Hoping to finish by tomorrow. I‘m about half way through! 3y
TrishB Great review 👍🏻 3y
Cinfhen So I don‘t have Behind Betty in my #BOTM copy 3y
Oryx It's really immersive, isn't it? And you just get so attached to the family. 3y
squirrelbrain Completely @Oryx - I was rooting for them, but knowing that nothing would end well. 3y
Cathythoughts Nice review! I‘m looking forward to it 👍🏻❤️ 3y

Apologies to my fellow #buddyreaders - I went off piste and I‘ve finished this early.

Looking forward to discussing when others have finished so no spoilers here. I loved how each ‘book‘ was different to the others, and the strong perspective on women throughout.

I think the connection to and interweaving of historical events weakened as the book went on but I particularly enjoyed reading Niza‘s perspective as she‘s the same age as me.

squirrelbrain Posted in-situ on the shelf as I know how much you like to be reminded of it‘s size Rachel! @RachelO 😂 4y
ValerieAndBooks I have somehow missed posts about this book. Is it worth stacking (size doesn‘t scare me 😂)? 4y

rockpools I‘ve gone rogue in the opposite direction, and not read any this week 🤦🏻‍♀️. Still quite glad we‘re reading it now, so there‘s no chance of me actually spotting it out in the wild! 4y
squirrelbrain @ValerieAndBooks - I would say yes, definitely. I couldn‘t be too detailed in my review as I might spoil it for my fellow #buddyreaders, but I would give it an 8 or 9 out of 10. Let‘s go for 8.5! 4y
Librarybelle Awesome! 4y
BookishMe 👌🏾👌🏾 4y
ValerieAndBooks @squirrelbrain thanks; stacking now 👍! 4y
AnneCecilie I just bought this book after seeing the comments. I find it positive that you couldn‘t keep to the schedule and am looking forward to reading this. Hopefully sometime during this spring/ summer. 4y
Hooked_on_books Wow, you finished! Awesome. I really like it, but I‘ve found a slower pace that‘s working for me. Not sure when I‘ll be done, but I‘ll tag you in the review. I‘m glad you set up this buddy read and nudged me into this one. 4y
squirrelbrain I look forward to your review @Hooked_on_books ! 4y
squirrelbrain Great news @AnneCecilie - I hope you enjoy it when you read it! 4y

#weeklyforecast

I‘m getting there with The Eighth Life and, apologies to my fellow #buddyreaders, I may read ahead to finish it this week.

The Alienist is my #bookspin book and I might make a start on Tell the Wolves I‘m Home, ready for MayBeNow.

I also have the second half of The Mirror and The Light to tackle on Libby.....

rockpools No problem! Thank you for keeping us on track so far 😘 4y
BarbaraBB Oh I am looking forward to your thought on The Alienist. It‘s on my TBR too. 4y
Cinfhen I‘ve just started Wolves 🐺 I‘m really liking it!!!! 4y

squirrelbrain I‘ll let you know @BarbaraBB - I hear only good things about it! 4y
squirrelbrain I get the feeling it might be ‘my kind‘ of book @Cinfhen, just from the blurb and others‘ reviews..... 4y
Cinfhen I think so, Helen 😊 4y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! 4y
Hooked_on_books I figure I‘m destined to be behind on the buddy read, so you would finish before me anyway! I‘m definitely enjoying it, though. Can‘t say I‘m a big fan of Elene. She‘s kind of twat, though I can see how that happened. 4y
squirrelbrain Have any of the characters been particularly likeable though Holly?! @Hooked_on_books (Stasia and Christine I think were a bit more likeable and rounded, and I did like Kitty). The later characters are also a bit obnoxious (trying not to spoil anything...) 4y
Hooked_on_books Even though she‘s not a character really for me yet, I think the narrator is fun. And Kitty is great. I agree with you about Stasia and Christine. Don‘t get me wrong, though, I don‘t need characters to be likeable, especially if the story is engaging, which this decidedly is. I just want to smack Elene at times! 4y
squirrelbrain It‘ll be interesting to see whether your perceptions of the narrator change later on @Hooked_on_books ! 🤐🤫🤷‍♀️ 4y

Yes, it‘s Wednesday again already, #buddyreaders!

How did you find Kitty‘s story this week? Is it obvious who her mystery caller is or not? (Put in spoilers just in case!)

I‘m really enjoying the way that the author is able to switch from big, world events to the minutiae of an individual‘s life, but don‘t you wish they would all just TALK to each other?!

This week we read Elene‘s book, which is a slightly longer section - be warned!

rockpools Oops. Now I DID know it was Wednesday this week, but I‘m only half way through- so a mega-effort next week! I don‘t think I‘ve ever read a book where I‘ve been so aware of the family tree (largely wondering how xx is going to survive long enough & find a partner willing/able to have kids, given everything.) I do agree that it‘s impressive how she flicks between/combines broad scale and very personal. 4y
rockpools So far, this is probably my least favourite section so far. K‘s affair with Alla just seemed a coincidence too far. 4y
squirrelbrain I did enjoy this one more than the previous section @RachelO but I know what you mean. I think this section was much more mainstream, it could have been *any* book. There wasn‘t as much of what made the previous sections so special. 4y

BookishTrish Confession: I didn‘t keep up this week but enjoyed much trashy tv instead 4y
squirrelbrain Nothing wrong with trashy TV @BookishTrish - anything you‘d recommend?! 😁 4y
BookishTrish I‘m rewatching the Fast & Furious movies and I succumbed to The Tiger King 4y
squirrelbrain Yes @BookishTrish , the Tiger King keeps calling to me too... I think I may also succumb soon too! 🐯 4y
Hooked_on_books Well, I remain a week behind. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have finished Kostya‘s section. We‘ll see if I‘m caught up by next week. The bleakness of the book is actually helping me deal with the current situation. It reminds me people have lived through awful (and worse) things before, making all this not seem as bad to me. 4y
rockpools @Hooked_on_books That‘s a great way of looking at it! 4y
Cathythoughts Beautiful cover 4y
BookishTrish @RachelO I‘m inclined to agree - this has been my least favourite section - and I still liked it. I‘m not sure Kitty and Fred is a plausible match give the times. I‘ll have to sit with it more. 4y

I‘m done! First book down for both #24B4Monday and #24in48 ! It‘s not in the database so instead of a review I‘ll just tell my fellow #buddyreaders that I‘m not disappointed, pretty sure I know who Viking‘s woman will be, and now I‘m intrigued with Beau. And Chavez—there‘s a story there. And really hope that racist bastard p.o.s. Governor Ayers comes to a bad end soon.

What in the world is wrong with me?! I'm only about 12% into the book and I've declared myself "Team Joe"! ? What the heck does this say about me?! ? Maybe I need to seek help... ??

CocoReads Ha! I think most of the #buddyreaders are #teamjoe even as bat crap crazy as he is, you just can't help it. 7y
