Listening Woman
Listening Woman | Tony Hillerman
8 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
The blind shaman called Listening Woman speaks of witches and restless spirits, of supernatural evil unleashed. But Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police is sure the monster who savagely slaughtered an old man and a teenage girl was human. The solution to a horrific crime is buried somewhere in a dead man's secrets and in the shocking events of a hundred years past. To ignore the warnings of a venerable seer, however, might be reckless foolishness when Leaphorn's investigation leads him farther away from the comprehensible . . . and closer to the most brutally violent confrontation of his career.

"The southwest wind picked up turbulence around the San Francisco Peaks, howled across the emptiness of the Moenkopi plateau, and made a thousand strange sounds in windows of the old Hopi villages at Shongopovi and Second Mesa."

Showed up in my LFL, but audio is a necessity when I have to be doing stuff.

From the cover blurb:
"The blind shaman Listening Woman speaks of witches and restless spirits, of supernatural evil unleashed. But Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police is sure the monster who slaughtered an old man and a teenage girl was human.
The solution is buried somewhere in a dead man‘s secrets—and in the shocking events of a hundred years past."

Soscha Has anyone caught the TV series? “Dark Winds” on TMC??? 1y
Soscha Has anyone caught the Hillerman novelization on AMC, “Dark Winds”? 1y
Aimeesue @Soscha Nope. I wasn't aware of the show, to be honest. Looks like a lot of it is based on this book, though! 1y
Soscha Sorry for the double post! 🫢 I‘ve been meaning to check it out though as well. 1y

New petition to force all books to include a book map! How hard is it, especially when it involves real places?! Finally printed off my own map, only to discover little tidbits like Mexican Water is actually a town and Lake Powell is REALLY far away from Albuquerque. I'm overall enjoying this series, whose MC is law enforcement for the Navajo nation. This one was published in 1978 & involved the AIM, which I only had a vague knowledge of. It's ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) somewhat frustrating because since it's more or less current history to when Hillerman is writing, he doesn't give a lot of explanations, which led to even more research for me haha These are kind of odd mysteries - Joe Leaphorn is the MC, but after three books I know literally nothing about his personal life, despite the fact that we're told repeatedly that family is incredibly important to the Navajo people. I'm not even sure if he's ⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) married or where he lives since he seems to spend most of his time wandering around and camping out of his truck. The mysteries themselves are decent & there are some interesting bits about Native American culture but the overall impersonal writing style is a little odd for me. However, I'm still planning to read the next few books in the series.

eeclayton I'd definitely sign that petition. I usually look up places on google maps, but it'd be so much nicer and way more convenient to just flip to an automatically included map page in the book! 3y

audraelizabeth Im obsessed with maps in books. 3y
TheAromaofBooks @eeclayton @audraelizabeth - the other book I'm reading is about a road trip on Route 66 - doesn't a map seem like a natural fit for a story ABOUT A ROAD TRIP!?!? I neeeeed maps!! In the Hillerman books, half the story is about where this guy is going & the lack of map meant I had zero concept of how far he's traveling. You can see that it's an immense amount of land. Just telling me he went from Window Rock to Tuba City isn't very informative! 3y
audraelizabeth @TheAromaofBooks Exactly and fantasy novels not set on this planet need a map. 3y
bookandbedandtea I read about half of the Tony Hillerman books when I was in high school and enjoyed them. I should definitely revisit them. I totally agree about book maps, btw! 3y
Smarkies Agreed! I would sign that petition. I have really bad sense of direction and map helps put things into perspective. 😂😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @bookandbedandtea - I'm on the fourth one now and really enjoying the unique setting/culture (especially now that I've printed off a map haha) They're strangely impersonal reads, but that may change as the series continues. 3y
Andrew65 I support you in this, love maps in books. 3y

Hour 12 challenge for #24in48. I love audiobooks! I always have one on my phone and one in the car for commutes. The top two are my current reads. The All Souls Trilogy is probably my favorite audios. I don‘t know that I would have finished them if it wasn‘t for Jennifer Ikeda and her expert narration.

I get the majority of my audios from the library.

1. Housework, running, driving, walking the dog, ignoring the children 😄.
2. Audible mainly and Libby.
3. Usually original but if the reader is very slow I go up to 1.5.
4. I actually don‘t chose by narrator but I think I should start paying more attention. I like when the narrator is the writer.
5. Priestdaddy 😍 😍 Heartburn 😍😍😍
