Pickles is also unimpressed by the appalling treatment of women in this book.

So far this story is absorbing, fantastically characterised and making me very angry. I'm reminded of A Thousand Splendid Suns which I read a very long time ago.

I'm about halfway through (lagging very behind my fellow buddy readers), but so far it's excellent.

TrishB There‘s no rush! It seems wrong to say you‘re enjoying it, but it was a good read despite the content!! 2y
TrishB And Pickles has the correct expression ❤️ 2y

JenReadsAlot Pickles is so cute!! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @TrishB Enjoying is not the right word, but I would say I'm invested in the story.. looking forward to reading your thoughts. 2y
Branwen PICKLES! 😸💕 2y
Branwen Also, this book was so hard to read. I am glad I read it, but it sure made me mad! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen Last night I was so worried that it would have a sad ending that I stayed up to finish it. I'm really glad it ended on a hopeful note. Maybe there will be a sequel? (I'll tell Pickles you say hi 💕😄) 2y

I can‘t believe I didn‘t read this book before now; I loved it! Adunni is such a wonderful MC, naïve to the ways of the world (and how evil people can be) but also wise beyond her years.

Like my fellow #buddyreaders I can‘t believe that this kind of treatment of women is still allowed and accepted in this day and age. ? Going to read back through spoiler tags now…!

#booked2022 #blackownedpublishinghouse

#loudbuddyread

squirrelbrain Fun fact: I noticed that, in her acknowledgments, the first person the author thanked was Felicity Blunt, who is an agent at Curtis Brown (the black-owned publishing house for #booked2022) and also sister of Emily and wife of the lovely Stanley Tucci! 2y
Cinfhen Oh, that‘s such a cool fact!!! Thanks for sharing 😘 and so glad you loved this one too!!! 2y
Cinfhen Great graphics 🥰 2y

RaeLovesToRead I'm only on page 90... you guys are so speedy!!!! Will try to finish in next couple of days and then I'll look back and comment 😊 2y
squirrelbrain I‘m having a reading day today @RaeLovesToRead after working the weekend, so that‘s how I finished it so quickly. Savour it and enjoy it - don‘t feel rushed! 2y
RaeLovesToRead It's really readable, I'm just a very slow reader. (Takes me hours to read 100 pages!) I've got a couple of hours now so I'll make myself a cuppa and settle down to it 😊 2y
TrishB Aww, I felt like that too! Why did I leave it so long. Hands down, most successful buddy read 😁 2y
TrishB That I‘ve been part of! 2y
squirrelbrain Success! 🥳 @TrishB 2y

I‘m so thankful to #ReadingAfrica22 &
#Booked2022 for giving me the extra push to finally pick up this book. In the vein of what Khaled Hosseini did for Afghan women, Abi Dare does the same for Nigerian girls in this heartbreaking yet hopeful novel. Adunni the 14yr old MC has experienced more trauma and sorrow in her young life, yet her optimism and joyful spirit is infectious. I‘m so glad I added audio narration to my Kindle purchase, 👇🏽

Cinfhen because hearing the Nigerian dialect & authentic pronunciation of the Igbo & Yoruba added so much richness to the story. So grateful for my #LoudBuddyRead friends for sharing their thoughts. 2y
RaeLovesToRead I'm only a fifth of the way in but I also was taken back to A Thousand Splendid Suns reading this far. Both books making me so so angry and conjuring the stifling and horrific realities of forced marriage. Which prompt are you using it for in #pop22? 2y

BarbaraBB Oooh sounds so good! 2y
squirrelbrain Great review… looking forward to reading the rest of it! 2y
emmaturi I really enjoyed this book! 2y
TrishB Despite all the awful things, I really enjoyed it! A successful buddy read 😁 2y
Cinfhen Yay @TrishB we‘re getting better at this buddyread thing xxx 2y
Cinfhen It was a very pleasant surprise @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @emmaturi Better than I expected 2y
TrishB Don‘t be jinxing it 😉😘 2y
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 next month we have this one @TrishB 2y
Librarybelle I really need to read this one! 2y
Cinfhen It‘s really good @Librarybelle I think you‘d like it 2y
Deblovestoread I loved Adunni! The author used a deft hand in showing the horrors of being a poor female in Nigeria while keeping her dream of having and using her voice alive. It would be hard to stay hopeful with such daily abuse. 2y
Cinfhen Adunni was the right blend of heart, humor & spunk. A great character @Kdgordon88 Im eager to continue #ReadingAfrica to discover experiences for others in different African countries 2y

Cinfhen Tia‘s flogging!!! Can you believe it??? 2y
Cinfhen And how perceptive of Adunni to question why is it only the women who are in “need” of “curing” - as if male infertility is not an legitimate issue 😡 2y
TrishB I‘m on chapter 30! I‘m enjoying the book with a heavy heart. Will get back to this when I get there. ☹️ I‘m expecting!! (edited) 2y

Deblovestoread At chap 34, finishing tonight. As @TrishB said good book, heavy heart. (edited) 2y
Cinfhen I have half hour of audio to go @TrishB @Kdgordon88 - can‘t wait to discuss book with all of the buddy -readers! So glad I finally picked this up. It was on my Kindle for too long. 2y
RaeLovesToRead Gah, I'm so intrigued..... must... not... click... spoiler tags.... 2y
squirrelbrain I‘m trying not to either! @RaeLovesToRead 2y
TrishB Tia 💔😡 I can‘t believe this is 2014!!! If I was reading this about the Middle Ages I‘d still think it was brutal. Why did no one help? Finding hard to believe that this was acceptable. 2y
RaeLovesToRead I didn't expect the flogging. When I saw this post I wondered if they had taken Adunni back to Ikati and so I stayed up to make sure she was OK... then I was nearly at the end so I stayed up longer to finish it. I'm glad it had a happy-ish ending. You know you've read a good book when you think to yourself - "I wonder how things turned out for Adunni.. it's 2022 now" before you realise she is a creation. A remarkable character & a moving story. 2y
Cinfhen Ha, exactly @RaeLovesToRead this was a really interesting look into African custom & traditions- unfortunately some of their beliefs are terrible 2y

#LoudBuddyRead chapter 40 - book is set in 2014! I‘m shocked at the attitude towards girls and their lack of worth, value. You would think it‘s 1914…so sad and infuriating @Mynameisacolour @TrishB @squirrelbrain @RaeLovesToRead @Kdgordon88

TheBookHippie It‘s like that where I live- 2022 it is 😝 2y
Cinfhen Ugh, that‘s so sad @TheBookHippie 💔💔 2y
TheBookHippie @Cinfhen Alt right religious evangelical zealots 😝. 2y

Cinfhen Scary 😧 I hope they don‘t advertise for bride prices @TheBookHippie 2y
TheBookHippie @Cinfhen I can‘t guarantee that- - It‘s very sad. They‘re taught they are less than and only to be wives and moms -that‘s it. The man tells you what you can and can‘t do. 🤮🤢 2y
Vansa Just like this in my country. 2y
Cinfhen Terrible 😢 it‘s 2022 - makes my heart heavy @Vansa @TheBookHippie 2y
TrishB It‘s so sad and 😡😡 2y
Vansa The tragic thing is...I live in a country that skews young, and it's the young people driving this conservatism. 2y
Cinfhen I understand what you‘re saying @Vansa that is a double tragedy 😞 2y

#weeklyforecast

I‘m hoping to finish Dignity this week, from my #nywd list. I‘ll also start Bellman and Black from that list; I‘d intended to start that last week but didn‘t get much #audiowalking done due to work and weather. @LeeRHarry

The other two are #buddyread books, if I can get to them! The #loudbuddyread is with @Cinfhen @TrishB and others, and Unsheltered is with @Caroline2 for #authoramonth. @Soubhiville

TrishB I‘m hoping to get some reading of our buddy read in later! Been doing emails ☹️ 2y
JennyM Hope work calms down and lets you read more this week. Have a good week 📚 2y
Cinfhen I think you‘re both gonna like Loud @TrishB @squirrelbrain but it‘s gonna make you MAD 😡 treatment of young girls in some societies is horrific 2y

squirrelbrain I‘ve just read the first 5 chapters @Cinfhen - loving her voice and wish I could get it on audio, but I can already see how 😡 it could be. @TrishB 2y
squirrelbrain It‘s only a couple of days of madness (hopefully!) @JennyM so should hopefully be better mid-week. 2y
TrishB @squirrelbrain @Cinfhen I need to go and help her now! ☹️😡 hurts my heart. 2y

I‘m up to chapter 18 and WOW!! If anyone is up to this point and wants to discuss below with spoiler tags feel free!!! I‘m doing an ebook- audio combo and im enjoying both mediums. #LoudBuddyRead @Mynameisacolour @TrishB @RaeLovesToRead @Kdgordon88 @squirrelbrain

Cinfhen How do you feel about the men in this book? Adunni‘s father? Morufu? Bamidele? 2y
TrishB I‘ve only read one chapter so will come back to this later! Footie is on 😁 2y
Cinfhen Do you think Adunni is making the right decision to run? 2y
See All 12 Comments
Cinfhen Happy footie ⚽️ @trishb xx 2y
squirrelbrain Haven‘t even started yet! I‘m resisting looking under the spoiler tag….which isn‘t like me! 🤣 2y
HeathHof The men are all absolutely awful! There was no way that I would have trusted my dad if I were Adunni. I felt nervous for her running away but she definitely didn't have much of a choice in the matter, I think the villagers would have killed her otherwise. 2y
Cinfhen I know @Mynameisacolour poor thing but now I‘m worried for her again….I think she might be sent to a brothel (edited) 2y
TrishB She just doesn‘t have a chance does she? Female lives are so cheap. Makes my blood boil. I think running gives her a choice where she obviously knows she isn‘t going to get one otherwise. 2y
HeathHof @Cinfhen That was my first thought too especially when medical papers were mentioned. I couldn't put this one down! I wish I would have bought the physical copy to loan out to friends. 2y
HeathHof @TrishB those were my thoughts too, how little life is valued especially women. I kept thinking this took place much longer ago than it was. Like I was shocked when I realized what year the story takes place 2y
Cinfhen I know!!! I think she said 2004 and I was like, WHAT????? 2004 @Mynameisacolour @TrishB - that was really shocking!! Do you think it‘s gotten better? I‘m worried it really hasn‘t. I mean the whole story about Boko Haram was in 2014. And I think some are STILL missing, being held hostage 💔 2y
Cinfhen Big Madam is HORRIBLE & Big Daddy is a predator, but I was relieved she wasn‘t being sent out as a prostitute @Mynameisacolour that would have destroyed me 2y

I actually have a very busy day today so not sure how much reading/listening I‘ll get in, but here‘s what I‘m looking forward to. Two from @MallenNC #NYWD list, a #LoudBuddyRead for #Booked2022 & #ReadingAfrica22, a NF gift from @TrishB which should work for #Rebel #NF22challenge and two more NF audios! The MJF was on @Hooked_on_books #Top21of21 list ❤️

Hooked_on_books I hope you enjoy it! He has such an amazing attitude in the face of chronic illness. I listened to that book almost a full year ago and it‘s still strongly with me. I had my mom listen to it when she was struggling and it helped her a lot. 2y
Smrloomis @Hooked_on_books Thanks to both of you for posting about the MJF book. I hadn‘t really considered reading it before but I think I need to! 2y
BarbaraBB Great planning 🤍 2y

Super excited for my new 2022 #BookSpin #DoubleSpin @TheAromaofBooks I know I discussed a buddy-read of Girl with the Louding Voice with @TrishB & @squirrelbrain and I know there‘s at least one other person but I can‘t find the post 🤦🏼‍♀️ So if anyone wants to join us in an informal #BR comment below. I‘d like to start next week, if that works. Cultish was on @britt_brooke #Top21Of21 list so I‘m really looking forward to reading that one.

TrishB Works for me 👍🏻 2y

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Good luck!! And great work finding the old post... I do wish Litsy had a function where you could search for a certain book on a person's page! 2y

Cinfhen Good to know @MallenNC 😊hope to start it later this week 2y
Deblovestoread Great job finding the post and finding me! I will do my best to read along with the group. 2y
Cinfhen Do you prefer reading at your own pace or breaking up the read over 3 weeks? @RaeLovesToRead @Kdgordon88 @squirrelbrain @TrishB ??! 2y
RaeLovesToRead Probably at own pace with a deadline ? Although happy to do it either way. If you'd like to do "what do you think of the book so far?" midway through, happy to break it up. 2y
TrishB Own pace too as I can‘t make a book last 3 weeks 😁 2y
Deblovestoread Either way is fine with me 2y
Cinfhen Hahaha @TrishB I already KNEW your answer xx 🤣cool @Kdgordon88 @RaeLovesToRead so let‘s start this coming weekend and we can just tag each other with thoughts/ ideas when the mood strikes 😉 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Cinfhen @Kdgordon88 @TrishB @squirrelbrain Awesome!! Have I tagged everyone? Looking forward to it 😊 2y
Deblovestoread Sounds good! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Mynameisacolour Sorry, meant to tag you too! 😊 2y
