I almost saved this one for next Christmas - the plot being the disappearance of one of group of charity carolers - but I‘m glad I went ahead and read it now.

I loved the English country setting and the tongue-in-cheek humor. The mystery waned a bit for me. I was drawn more the by author‘s prose and the characters, and I would absolutely like to read another by this author. Did I mention he was quite funny?

I was intrigued by all the posts from the #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub and decided to pick up a copy to read for myself. The story was charming and delightful, and a nice break from the darker stories I had been reading this month.

Crazeedi Your idea is totally cool! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Crazeedi I wish I could take credit, but all the credit goes to @Marchpane who thought up this great idea and shared it with us here on Litsy. 6y
Crazeedi @Riveted_Reader_Melissa is it too late to jump in? When did this start? I could look back to start date and see what books I've read 6y

CoffeeNBooks What a cool idea! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Crazeedi When I started and asked the same question, she said it started as soon as you join, and count from then. But it‘s really independent, so if you want to go back to the beginning of this year, go for it. 6y
JazzFeathers Wow! You're making such good progress 😄 6y
DreesReads It‘s filling in! Have you heard from @Marchpane lately? 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @AudreyMorris No, I haven‘t. But I‘m hoping she‘ll be back eventually. But it has been quite awhile. 6y

This one‘s hard for me to review, it‘s sad and melancholy, it‘s about how you feel when life‘s warn you down, and you feel like every glance and whisper is against you. It may be a sad read, but it‘s beautifully written, about the time after war, the loss, the grief, the trying to reinvent yourself again, even if it doesn‘t work out. Also a great portrait of depression.

JazzFeathers Sounds like a bleak one. Still, l'm studying Europe in the intetwar years for my writing projects, so l kind of think l should read it. And that covet 😍😍😍 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers It‘s set in that time, but does actually talk about the war much. 6y

Xiangze moves from the country to Beiping to be a rickshaw puller. With hard work, clean living, and honesty he has great plans for success. He is constantly thwarted by events out of his control. An easy if repetitive read and an anti-philosophy of individualism novel. 1001books #reading1001 #192019 #1939

I'm not sure I need to review this: it's a reread, still wonderfully atmospheric and a great story. It may send me off on a historical fiction spree - I need to know more about Mary Queen of Scots & Catholic history. And next time I'm in Derbyshire, I'm off location-spotting!

"Do you have wars, Penelope? Or is your future that Utopia about which Thomas More wrote?"
"We have wars, and there isn't Utopia yet," I laughed ruefully.
