The Boy in the Black Suit
The Boy in the Black Suit | Jason Reynolds
A 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book. Just when seventeen-year-old Matt thinks he cant handle one more piece of terrible news, he meets a girl whos dealt with a lot moreand who just might be able to clue him in on how to rise up when life keeps knocking him downin this vivid, satisfying, and ultimately upbeat tale of grief, redemption, and grace (Kirkus Reviews) from the Coretta Scott King John Steptoe Awardwinning author of When I Was the Greatest.Matt wears a black suit every day. No, not because his mom diedalthough she did, and it sucks. But he wears the suit for his gig at the local funeral home, which pays way better than the Cluck Bucket, and he needs the income since his dad cant handle the bills (or anything, really) on his own. So while Dads snagging bottles of whiskey, Matts snagging fifteen bucks an hour. Not bad. But everything else? Not good. Then Matt meets Lovey. Crazy name, and shes been through more crazy stuff than he can imagine. Yet Lovey never cries. Shes tough. Really tough. Tough in the way Matt wishes he could be. Which is maybe why hes drawn to her, and definitely why he cant seem to shake her. Because theres nothing more hopeful than finding a person who understands your lonelinessand who can maybe even help take it away.

It is my first book by this author. this book is surprisingly good. It is about a teenage boy dealing with the untimely death of his mother. He takes a part time job at funeral home and how that affects his emotional well being is well narrated. It may sound very depressing, it‘s indeed sad yet beautiful & feel good type. Simple story, predictable plot but well narrated. Good audio narration. #authoramonth2022 #bookspinbingo #authoramonth

In an interview last week Jason Reynolds said this was his favorite Jason Reynolds book. It‘s been on my TBR shelf for a while, so I gave it a shot.
It did not disappoint.
Matt‘s mother has just died. He ends up working a part-time job at the funeral home that performed her service. He finds sitting in on other funerals helps him feel less alone. Beautiful story about loss and living with grief.

#JubilantJuly

This is a quiet kind of story about a boy figuring out life after his mother dies. His relationships with his father and friends feel different in the wake of this new grief and loneliness, but a new job and a new girl offer his new opportunities for engaging with his reality. #bookspin #bookspinbingo #readblackauthors

My updated #BookSpinBingo card! I‘m excited for this challenge and all of these books, so ideally, I want to get all the bingos—but if that doesn‘t happen (since most of the time, I‘m not as good at reading according to a listed I hope to be), I‘m aiming for ones involving The Boy in the Black Suit (#bookspin) and Not That Kind of Guy (#doublespin). #readblackauthors

AmyK1 Roll of Thunder is on mine too! 👍🏼 4y
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! I like the bingo because it allows a lot more freedom for mood reading than the Bonanza did. 4y

Thank you sooo much @TheBookHippie for the wonderful gifts!!! #readinthenewyear 🎉 @Chrissyreadit

TheBookHippie Oh yay!!!!!! I hope you enjoy it all!!! Jason Reynolds is one of the most kindest people I have ever met. Humble and compassionate watching him with kids I mentor and stop his talk to come look them in the eye and talk it out and then getting to talk to him about my volunteering made me his biggest fan. So I hope you love his book❤️ (edited) 4y

Reynolds is a good writer. He captures the grief and poignant feeling of being lost in a wilderness of pain after the death of a loved one. However, the ending just seems to fizzle out with no resolution or climax.

Love and death with two Brooklyn teens...sweet and real. Reality woven in effortlessly (it seems) and colorful characters ... young adult of course but these can ring true and clear as this book does.

I don‘t think I‘ve read a Jason Reynolds book that I don‘t like. Matt has just lost his mom and gets a job working in a funeral home to help his dad. His job there allows him to meet a unique friend, as well as learn a little about himself. With a shocking ending, I couldn‘t put this book down. Definitely one that I loved! I can‘t wait to read more by #JasonReynolds!

Reynolds has created a character with a Palahniuk-esque fascination with funerals, something that helps him with his own grieving process through the pain of others. But Matty is more than just a visitor into the feelings of others. He‘s also confused about his emotions and looking to make sense of things, a desire made clear through his interactions in this book. He‘s bumbling along like all of us, hoping he still has more cards to keep flipping.

It was okay; it felt kind of underdeveloped. But I do like that it's just a normal contemporary story about black families that are more than the usual stereotypes.

BekahB I haven't read this one, but I really enjoyed Reynolds' book When I Was the Greatest. 😀 8y
Teenta @BekahB I've heard that one is awesome. So far I've read this one and All American Boys, and they were both okay but I'm looking for something a little more... 8y

Dear Fellow Littens, while at a #dbf2016 author panel today Jason Reynolds, who was just an audience member, chimed in to help answer another audience member's question & blew me away. I haven't read anything by him but now really want to. Any recommendations for where to start?? Thanks!

navallone I read All American Boys with our high school book club this year. They all loved it, as did I. Led to an enlightening discussion about race in America. 8y
Theresa @navallone I ended up buying several of his books, including All American Boys. They're all on my TBR for October & I can't wait to get to them!! There's only 1 book that I have yet to finish for my September TBR that's standing in my way & I'm sure that will be finished way before 10/1. 😄 8y

Another favorite recent read. The story of a kid who becomes preoccupied by funerals. Moving, yes. But also surprisingly funny.
