And Again
And Again: A Novel | Jessica Chiarella
In the spirit of Station Eleven and The Age of Miracles, this exciting literary debut novel imagines the consequences when four ordinary individuals are granted a chance to continue their lives in genetically perfect versions of their former bodies.Would you live your life differently if you were given a second chance? Hannah, David, Connie, and Lindafour terminally ill patientshave been selected for the SUBlife pilot program, which will grant them brand-new, genetically perfect bodies that are exact copies of their former selveswithout a single imperfection. Blemishes, scars, freckles, and wrinkles have all disappeared, their fingerprints are different, their vision is impeccable, and most importantly, their illnesses have been cured. But the fresh start theyve been given is anything but perfect. Without their old bodies, their new physical identities have been lost. Hannah, an artistic prodigy, has to relearn how to hold a brush; David, a Congressman, grapples with his old habits; Connie, an actress whose stunning looks are restored after a protracted illness, tries to navigate an industry obsessed with physical beauty; and Linda, who spent eight years paralyzed after a car accident, now struggles to reconnect with a family that seems to have built a new life without her. As each tries to re-enter their previous lives and relationships they are faced with the question: how much of your identity rests not just in your mind, but in your heart, your body?

Four people have to find a new #Equilibrium after having their minds transplanted from sick and decaying bodies into new cloned ones. I want to read this book again at some point.

The DS9 episode is interesting in relation to the tagged book because Jadzia has to fight to reintegrate memories that had been blocked in her symbiont. #StarTrekSummerJune

MicheleinPhilly I was surprised by how much I loved this book. 5y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly me too. I‘m afraid I‘ve made it sound cheesy, but it was actually quite good. 5y

As I near the end of the book, a character says, “It‘s July 18th.”

I love when time lines up like this. 🕰

Added this to my #TBR last month - here's part of the synopsis:

"Hannah, David, Connie, and Linda—four terminally ill patients—have been selected for the SUBlife pilot program, which will grant them brand-new, genetically perfect bodies that are exact copies of their former selves...But the fresh start they‘ve been given is anything but perfect. Without their old bodies, their new physical identities have been lost."

I liked this one. I liked the rotating narrators and that each person had a unique experience. It's definitely an interesting premise and made me think. I read a description and that compared this to Station 11 so I did feel a little disappointed because they are nothing alike and I loved Station 11, but this still gets a pick from me

I initially had a slight problem getting into this story, though I loved the concept of it. (It's about four people who have terminal conditions and participate in a study that clones their bodies while preserving their memories.) But as I read further I was hooked. I loved how each character has a unique struggle in this new body.

AND AGAIN is a beautiful, well-written, interesting story about choices and identity.

Well-ReadNeck This is one of my favorite reads this year. So thought provoking!! 7y

Book 1 down - interesting... Cloning, but not a thriller... Rather a look at what it means for 4 individuals and those in their lives #readathon #deweys24hrreadathon #deweysreadathon

Day 9 of #Booktober: This is my #FirstEverLitsyPost! I remember downloading Litsy, setting my phone down bc I didn't know anyone on the app, starting this book after, & immediately going "Who the hell cares if I know anyone, this is an awesome epigraph!" So I posted it. So glad my normally antisocial self took that leap. Y'all are the best! I'm glad I have you guys to share my love of reading with. ??

OSChamberlain When I wake up I'll catch up. Maybe... Hahahaa. 7y

I blew through this one. Four sick people undergo a clinical trial that takes their memories and puts them in a cloned, healthy body, and they have to struggle with the ramifications of their new lives.

#Recommendsday One of my favorite reads this year. Four terminally ill patients are chosen to undergo a new medical procedure that will save them by putting their consciousness in a new cloned body. Their new lives are much more difficult than they imagined. This novel grapples with the nature of humanity and identity. Stuck with me long after the reading. A book that begs to be discussed.

I loved this book, almost. Everything was beautiful, but for some reason none of the characters loved their children or children in general. Not one. Since, I have small children and have recently had a baby I found this a little irritating.

Wow! This author! The premise of the book wasn't something I thought I would like. I'm so glad I tried it anyways! Her words have so much depth to them. It's hard for me to explain, to put words to her words.

I'm struggling with a book hangover from the Sandman Slim books. I started and discarded 4 books before giving this one a try. Only 20% in and am not sure about it. Great premise but the characters aren't engaging and can't seem to connect to them. Determined to see it through though.

Reviewsbylola I liked this one. I agree, something about the characters seemed a little off and I had trouble connecting with them but they were still interesting to read about and the story was a cool concept. So despite the flaws, it was still a pick for me. 8y

If you want to spend time with some interesting characters and really think about identity. Read this! It is heartbreaking and slow (like Age of Miracles with less danger looming).

Started out pretty great and then slowly lost its voice. Maybe it's true that people squander second chances but these were people who had nowhere to go but up, so their journey was ultimately a disappointment.

Very interesting and thought provoking. An under the radar question about what really makes a person. Is it our bodies, our memories or our heart? What happens when one of those irrevocably changes? Can't wait to see how it ends.

I loved this book, particularly the formerly paralyzed character. It was amazing how accurate that portrayal seemed. While I'm not terminally ill, my body's pretty busted, so it gave me a lot to think about. It grapples with hard questions about ethics and abandonment.

Four terminally ill patients get a new lease on life after being chosen to participate in an experimental human cloning program. Rawly emotional and humanizing work of speculative fiction that looks at the impact of memory and change on our identity. #ReadWomen
