Audubon's Birds of America
Audubon's Birds of America: The National Audubon Society Baby Elephant Folio | John James Audubon
12 posts | 6 read
This marvelous edition of Audubon's Birds of America displays all 435 of Audubon's brilliant handcolored engravings in exquisite reproductions taken from the original plates of the Audubon Society's archival copy of the rare Double Elephant Folio. Although many attempts have been made to re-create the magnificent illustrations in Audubon's masterpiece, nothing equals the level of fidelity or scale achieved in this high-quality edition. Organized and annotated by Roger Tory Peterson, America's best-known ornithologist, and issued with the full endorsement and cooperation of the Audubon Society, this magnificent volume is as thorough in scientific classification as it is beautiful. Peterson's fascinating introduction places Audubon in the context of the history of American ornithological art and also reproduces a wide sampling of the work of Audubon's notable predecessors and disciples, including Peterson's own justly famous paintings. This new systematic arrangement of the prints, complete with informative commentaries about each bird, made it possible to correct many of the problems or errors in Audubon's original edition revealed by later scholarship. The colorful captions in the back provide fascinating commentaries on each featured bird. AUTHOR: Roger Tory Peterson has been regarded as America's most notable ornithologist following the publication of A Field Guide to the Birds in 1934. Like Audubon, Peterson received many honorary degrees and awards, including the Presidential Medal of Honor. Virginia Marie Peterson is a scientist and an expert on the environmental effects of oil spills. 917 colour illustrations

1* the tagged classic my mom got for me at a used bookstore when I was on a work trip to Pittsburgh and she met me there to spend some time together. I love Audubon‘s watercolors 🥰
2* I can‘t think of anything specific, but probably all the books I was forced to read in college lit.
3* Good Omens... the side chats kind of distracted and bored me. Probably an unpopular opinion.

Eggs Audubon is a great love of mine💕. Thanks for playing Emily 👏🏻👏🏻 3y
DHill I received this book for Christmas and I love it! 3y
Cosmos_Moon @Eggs & @DHill it is beautiful! 3y
Vansa I read Good omens again before the TV show, and really found it mediocre this time round Exactly same reasons-the side characters all seemed pointless. 3y

In 2010 a copy of Audubon's "The Birds of America" sold at auction for $10M, earning it the distinction of being the world's most expensive book. The only other book worth more is the Gutenberg Bible, & it has been over thirty years since a copy was available for auction. Last summer an Audubon was sold, all of the proceeds going towards environmental conservation.

Kalalalatja Hey, you found another pick! And a very interesting one at that, I didn‘t know about it 🙌 5y
merelybookish The birds he painted were stuffed. I just learned that. Makes sense but I was a bit disappointed. 5y

Here are two illustrations (blue jay & Canada warbler) from Birds of America by John James Audubon. This is the 1947 edition passed down from my Grandpa to my father to me. Although if my brother asks it's still our father's book 🕊

Pickpick

Regarding Audubon? What a talent. Regarding his subject matter? What a beautiful world. The wren was my grandma‘s favorite bird. Each spring, upon hearing its song, she would call me and say, “Naomi, my wren is back.” A beloved memory as we approach spring. 🌷🌸😊

AmyG I love the illustrations. I have a friend who turned my into a bird lover. I used to feel them in NJ...but moved to CO. It‘s different here but in the summer...we get lots of hummingbirds. ❤️ 6y
peacegypsy It‘s a present to see those! How neat. 😊 6y
