Don't Look Now And Other Stories
Don't Look Now And Other Stories | Daphne Du Maurier
17 posts | 14 read | 21 to read
John and Laura have come to Venice to try and escape the pain of their young daughter's death. But when they encounter two old women who claim to have second sight, they find that instead of laying their ghosts to rest they become caught up in a train of increasingly strange and violent events. The four other haunting, evocative stories in this volume also explore deep fears and longings, secrets and desires: a lonely teacher who investigates a mysterious American couple, a young woman confronting her father's past, a party of pilgrims who meet disaster in Jerusalem and a scientist who harnesses the power of the mind to chilling effect.

I‘m posting one book a day from my massive collection. No description, no reason for why I want to read it (some I‘ve had so long I don‘t even remember why!) Feel free to join in!

A nice little collection, with varying degrees of "paranormal". It's not overdone but rather deftly weaved into the narrative. The endings are not wholly unexpected but the stories hook you all the same, thanks to the lively descriptions and great atmosphere building. I'll be on the hunt for more from du Maurier, for sure...

Day 3 of #12Booksof2020 One of my greatest discoveries of the year has been Daphne Du Maurier. I first read her in March, when I read the tagged volume. Although certain stories work better than others, at her finest Du Maurier is on par with Shirley Jackson. As Michael Dirda wrote, ““Her tales of the macabre are among the best of their genre.“ Features stories that were adapted into two classic films, the title story & “The BIrds.“ @andrew65

vivastory I was very pleased to see a du Maurier feature in the current issue of Bookmarks 3y
Andrew65 She was my discovery of last year. She‘s also an author for #Authoramonth in 2021. Possibly March. @Soubhiville (edited) 3y
EadieB @vivastory This is my favorite of her books: 3y

BarbaraBB I like her a lot too. I have one unread left of my shelves that I hope to get to next year soon. 3y
quirkyreader On goodreads we had the Daphene Du Maurier read along. The page is still up and join in. There is a list of all of her books in chronological order. Some are hard to find. Others such as Rebecca are easy to find. Good luck with your endeavour. 3y
CaraTK @vivastory thanks for the recommendation! The author is February‘s (?) pick for Litsy 2021 #authoramonth 3y

There is a feeling of deja vu about this collection of stories. Maybe I have read some before ... maybe not , adds to the intrigue ... very good.
Next story : A Borderline Case !
Excellent writing ...

I read the first two stories, the title story & Birds, in this collection at the end of January & for some reason set it aside. I picked it up yesterday and just finished. Obviously as it is a short story collection certain pieces are stronger than others, but the ones that do work match Shirley Jackson at her finest. It's no wonder that Michael Dirda wrote, "Du Maurier's tales of the macabre are among the best of their genre." Now on to Rebecca!

LeahBergen Nice review. I‘m planning to reread some of her stories very soon. 👍🏻 4y
BookishMe Rebecca is 💟😍💗 4y

This collection was amazing - even the weakest story was one I could not put down. Definitely will be reading more du Maurier.

Not sure how faithful it is to the story, but Don't Look Now is a great 1970s arthouse horror flick.

Did a little #retailtherapy after book club last night and went slightly overboard, maybe. In my defense the art of the novella series are kinda hard to find so when I see them I snatch them up... and the other 2 books were on BookPeople‘s final sale (half off) shelf because they have minor (like almost nonexistent) imperfections. 😅 #bookhaul #amnowonanotherbookbuyingban #letsseehowlongthatlasts

BookishTrish Who publishes those beauties? 6y
writerlibrarian I can see why this novella series is irresistible. They are quite lovely edition. 💜 6y
Eyelit @BookishTrish Melville House 6y
RealBooks4ever Ooooo, Killers of The Flower Moon is SO GOOD! 💜 You certainly know what you‘re reading with those novella covers - no confusing graphics hiding the title or author! 😆 6y

• Ahhh! That awful stressful time when your entire TBR has lost your interest and you want to order all new books... 🤦🏼‍♀️ Does anyone else get that? This is the worst thing for me and 9/10 I actually end up doing just that. ✨ #booklover #booksofinstagram #bookstagram #bookblogger #bibliophile #bookishfeatures #met_createchange

Just finished listening to Peter Capaldi's narration of Don't Look Now. AMAZING. So well structured and brilliantly told.

saresmoore I'm sorry, WHAT?! Now there's an audiobook I can't resist! 7y
rabbitprincess @saresmoore I found it through Overdrive, so if your library uses that system, check if they have it. It may also be on Audible. 7y
