Reminiscent of Doll Bones, this deliciously eerie middle grade novel tells the story of a girl who must enter a world of ghosts, witches, and monsters to play a game with deadly consequences and rescue her aunt. Evie Von Rathe lives in Blight Harborthe seventh-most haunted town in Americawith her Aunt Desdemona, the local paranormal expert. Des doesnt have many rules except one: Stay out of the abandoned slaughterhouse at the edge of town. But when her aunt disappears into the building, Evie goes searching for her. There she meets The Clackity, a creature who lives in the shadows and seams of the slaughterhouse. The Clackity makes a deal with Evie to help get Des back in exchange for the ghost of John Jeffrey Pope, a serial killer who stalked Blight Harbor a hundred years earlier. Evie must embark on a journey into a strange otherworld filled with hungry witches, penny-eyed ghosts, and a memory-thief, all while being pursued by a dead man whose only goal is to add Evie to his collection of lost souls.

I wish that as a child there had been a book like this. This book was definitely up my loving the supernatural type of stories. Lora Senf can write like the best of them! This book is up there with The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I recommend reading this with your child or recommending it to the purchasing librarian at your local Library, I know I will! I've got a few kids who wander the stacks looking for books like The Clackity.

This was a spooky, fun, middle grade horror book that had me smiling to myself and turning the pages. Evie is a delight, her Aunt is the sweetest of witches, and the friends she meets on her adventures are special and wise. So happy I stumbled upon this one for the #BookRiotchallenge . #BookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

A wonderfully spooky & atmospheric middle-grade novel, which reminded me a lot of Coraline with its adventures, ghosts, places, and creatures set in another “parallel“ world. Two thumbs up!

I loved this book. Eve overcomes loss, grief, and her greatest fears to rescue her Aunt Des. The Clackity was a truly creepy character. Bird was an excellent sidekick. I look forward to the sequel.

This is a #blamelitsy book. It is a dark MG horror novel that deals with grief, fear, loss, and anxiety. The audiobook narration is done well, capturing the tension perfectly. I liked the characters. The Clackity is reminiscent of Tolkien‘s Gollum, and the evil spirit is truly chilling. I‘m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Evie is a great young heroine filled with determination. Senf's writing is well-paced, and she provides a nice balance of spooky & comfy for MG horror (Coraline vibes). The quest aspect also fit well for the story and flowed naturally. Edgar-cat approved.

Just finished this up with my 6th grade book club. I felt like it dragged a little in the middle, but it was a cute story overall. My kids really liked it. #schoollibraries #teachersoflitsy #librariansoflitsy

Middle grade, dark fairy tale quest, mental health rep, ghosts, witches, zombies, magical tattoos. Reminds me of Hazelwood by Melissa Albert or Fairy Tale by Stephen King.. but shorter and less gory. Older middle grade for sure.
Evie loses her parents at a young age. She lives with her aunt in a haunted town. When her aunt goes missing, Evie must embark on an epic journey. She must face all her grief, fear, and anxiety to save those she loves.

We started our new 6th grade Lit Lunch book today and had a very promising start! I always open sign ups to the whole 6th grade whenever we start a new title and had 15 students show up today - since its a class of about 50, I'm pleased with that! #schoollibraries #teachersoflitsy #librariansoflitsy

Finished this one earlier last week. Middle grade horror novel. Evie is living with her aunt who disappears. Evie goes looking for her, which takes her on another world/wild journey. The town she lives in is haunted. Having a ghost in your house is normal.

Evie lives with her aunt in Blight Harbor, the 7th most haunted town in America, & most days it‘s pretty awesome but when her aunt goes missing, Evie vows to find her & bring her home. To succeed, she‘ll need to let go of the past, confront an ancient evil, & do it all before the sun sets. This book is perfect for middle grade readers who like their ghost stories scary & more than a little dark. Perfectly creepy illustrations add to the story.

Pretty much the perfect middle grade horror. Evie is a great young heroine & I fell in love very quickly. The premise is interesting & the execution is fun with lots of mysterious & gothic atmosphere. Senf's writing is wonderful & moves at just the right clip. The quest trope is on point with a bit of a whimsical touch even though the overall feel of the novel is dark. It gave me a bit of a Coraline plus Wayward Children vibes & I loved it.

A new nightmare has arrived and its name is Clackity.

Senf‘s writing is vivid and evocative, with the reader feeling every tendril of fog or greasy bit of iron. The bad folk here are B.A.D. and the good folk are flawed but awesome. With nods to Coraline and even The Frighteners, this one is a solid read for upper middle grades, teens, and adults who enjoy Neil Gaiman and early Stephen King.
