Honor Girl
Honor Girl: A Graphic Memoir | Maggie Thrash
79 posts | 76 read | 65 to read
All-girl camp. First love. First heartbreak. At once romantic and devastating, brutally honest and full of humor, this graphic-novel memoir is a debut of the rarest sort. Maggie Thrash has spent basically every summer of her fifteen-year-old life at the one-hundred-year-old Camp Bellflower for Girls, set deep in the heart of Appalachia. She’s from Atlanta, she’s never kissed a guy, she’s into Backstreet Boys in a really deep way, and her long summer days are full of a pleasant, peaceful nothing . . . until one confounding moment. A split-second of innocent physical contact pulls Maggie into a gut-twisting love for an older, wiser, and most surprising of all (at least to Maggie), female counselor named Erin. But Camp Bellflower is an impossible place for a girl to fall in love with another girl, and Maggie’s savant-like proficiency at the camp’s rifle range is the only thing keeping her heart from exploding. When it seems as if Erin maybe feels the same way about Maggie, it’s too much for both Maggie and Camp Bellflower to handle, let alone to understand.

This is a beautifully written memoir about the awkwardness and drama that comes with being a teenage girl trying to figure out her identity. The artwork style isn‘t my favorite, but it works well with the story being told.

A beautiful coming of age story, but the graphic novel format doesn‘t necessarily add anything to it. The art feels amateurish, which is disappointing, because the story is honest and funny and sad and heartfelt. Still very worth a read, but don‘t expect amazing art.

I'm paying for it this morning, but I stayed up late last night because once I started I could not put this down. I've thoroughly enjoyed the several graphic memories I've read in the past couple years. I've stumbled upon most of them, but I'm going to make an effort to seek them out now.

Memoir about falling in love at a Christian summer camp and the struggle about whether or not to come out to friends and family. There are some funny and poignant moments, but I simply didn‘t connect with the artwork. And that ending?!? I realize memoirs don‘t necessarily have neat and tidy endings, but still.

Could be helpful for a young person coming to terms with their sexuality, but not my cup of tea.

I read this because @LitsyGetsGraphic picked it for last month‘s buddy read. It was great!! The illustrations are deceptively simple but Thrash‘s style conveys the story so well.

The part that got me the most was when people told her she wasn‘t really gay. People do this to lgbtq kids all the time. It happened so much that I stopped trusting myself as a kid and that‘s a terrible feeling.

#lgbtq #graphicnovel

MissAimz_55 As someone who identifies as bisexual and who was with a man for 9 years until getting with my girlfriend who I'm madly in love with , this is something that resonates with me. I get it from both sides telling me that I'm not gay or that I don't count, that bisexuality isn't a real thing or that I'm going through a phase. I'm glad to see books are addressing this and hopefully we can all work together to make this world easier for all LGBTQ 1y

What did the title Honor Girl mean for Maggie before she was chosen and after? Why Maggie was chosen as Honor Girl? Did it mean anything for her?

#litsygetsgraphic

Eyelit I think, in winning, it highlighted to Maggie that things only have the meaning you give them. Since she knew she was being ‘rewarded‘ for keeping silent - the title meant very little and she got an early look into how the world really works. She knew she didn‘t fit the model for the usual winners and that made her feel like it was just this sham and it was embarrassing to even be a part of it. 1y
whatsthEStorey @Eyelit very insightful! She must've felt so disillusioned. Those moments in adolescence suck. 💔 1y

What is the significance of Maggie's haircut? What need might she have been fulfilling by making such a drastic change?

#litsygetsgraphic

whatsthEStorey Women cutting their hair is a literary and cinematographic tool to symbolize transformation. I think it's also a natural impulse to want your outside to match your insides when you're going through a big change. Someone told me a long time ago never to make a drastic style change right after a breakup. That is probably the only reason I've never had rainbow colored hair or a stacked bob (which may or may not be a good thing)! 1y
Eyelit @whatsthEStorey yes! As someone who has made drastic hair changes following a major life event I can say that I immediately both loved and regretted the change 😄 eventually settling on acceptance 1y
LukkiAnn The haircut played a significant role for Erin to explore and understand herself. I think she excepted the change by this gesture. 1y
readordierachel Totally agree with @whatsthEStorey, and I think it's also a way to take control of something tangible when you feel at sea. I too have made some drastic hair changes that I loved/regretted @Eyelit 😆 I feel you. 1y
whatsthEStorey @ReadOrDieRachel that's a good point about taking control! 1y

What do you think about Maggie‘s theory about gaydar? Anybody experienced this??? Do you think Maggie and Erin are in touch? Is it possible to them to be friends?

#litsygetsgraphic

tjwill 😂 I‘m not sold on the idea of gaydar. I think it‘s more like those who are open-minded about various issues will find each other. If someone is worried about what others will think of them, they may tend to be more open-minded themselves. 1y
whatsthEStorey @tjwill I think you're right, people may just naturally gravitate toward people with similar qualities and open-mindedness. I guess you could call that gaydar. Also, a lot of people are gay! 1y
LukkiAnn @whatsthEStorey @tjwill I think you are right, there is just a common sense to attract people with the same interests nothing more) 1y
LukkiAnn I do not think that Maggie and Erin are friends, and I do not see any possibilities of touchiness through the book and author‘s interviews 1y
whatsthEStorey @LukkiAnn I don't either. Maybe they connected on social media or have a mutual friend, since Maggie knew she was married, but I expect that's probably the extent of it. 1y

The main camp story is bookended by a a vignette of a future meet-up of Maggie & Erin. Was it surprising to you how awkward this encounter was between the two older girls - or was that to be expected?

#litsygetsgraphic

whatsthEStorey I think that was to be expected. I think that summer was a transformative moment in time for Maggie because she was becoming herself, not because of some spectacular connection with Erin. I went away to a writing camp when I was 17 (completely different, very liberal) & something about being away, immersed w/peers, in this weird microcosm, makes everything so intense! Seeing camp friends in the real world is a letdown. 1y
Eyelit @whatsthEStorey makes a good point - the camp experience is so different from everyday life I think it can‘t be anything but awkward if you encountered someone from that group in your everyday life (unless they were already part of your everyday life). When I went to camp we always made promises to keep in touch via mail or email... and it inevitably fizzled out pretty quickly 1y
LukkiAnn It was expected, and I expected that it went awkward as well, but again the end was disappointed ((( I just need to understand this relationship more 1y
tjwill @whatsthEStorey @Eyelit I agree with your comments. You all said exactly what I was thinking and I feel that I cannot contribute anything further. 😁 1y

This graphic memoir was the March pick by @LitsyGetsGraphic , to be discussed today, so I read it as soon as I got up! I'm really enjoying the genre of nonfiction graphic novels. This is Maggie Thrash's summer of 15 at an all-girls sleep-away camp, where she falls in love...with another girl. The illustrations are beautiful, the writing is honest, but I wanted a little more of something.

AshleyHoss820 I like that quote! 1y
whatsthEStorey @AshleyHoss820 thanks, me too! ❤️ It lives on my fridge. 1y
hermyknee I agree with the ending and wanting a little more 1y
whatsthEStorey @hermyknee there's an epilogue added to the paperback version that @LitsyGetsGraphic shared during the discussion. If that had been incorporated into the book, it would've been a lot better for me! https://www.autostraddle.com/drawn-to-comics-15-year-old-maggie-thrash-interview... 1y

Hello beautiful graphic novels readers❤️ let‘s start our discussion. We hope you check out the article that we just share👇🏻 and have some new ideas about the book.
1️⃣ Sharewith us do you like the book or not and why. 2️⃣ let‘s talk about setting. What kinds of assumptions might be made about campers and the community culture?
3️⃣ Do you remember “Don‘t Ask, Don‘t Tell“ time for LGBT community and was it was for you?

#litsygetsgraphic

Eyelit I liked this one, though it didn‘t quite meet my high expectations (so many people I know raved about it). I don‘t remember the don‘t ask don‘t tell so I can‘t comment much on that. I did have some preconceived notions on the camp and how people would react, and am pleasantly surprised to say it wasn‘t as awful as I thought it was going to be for Maggie 1y
LukkiAnn I really like this memoir but after finished it I felt disappointed with the ending. I wanted to hear more depth in story and Maggie feelings. The setting is really interesting, and I was surprised as well how easy girls reacted on the situation. I knew nothing about Don‘t ask don‘t tell period but I am glad to find out from author interviews that her parents now ok with her choice❤️ 1y
whatsthEStorey I liked this, but it left me wanting something more from it. Maybe another fifty pages to add more of the depth of feeling. I loved the epilogue shared in the last post! I needed a little more of that in the book. 1y
LitsyGetsGraphic @whatsthEStorey I agree with you, wholeheartedly! 1y
tjwill I liked the book. All I knew about it before was what was on the cover. I went to a Christian camp in the south as a kid, so I can understand how she dreaded anyone finding out. I remember Don‘t Ask Don‘t Tell as she described in the epilogue, as being a way to say “It‘s ok if you are gay, but don‘t talk about it.” As a teenager, I knew teens who were gay but had to keep it quiet. People are much more open about sexuality now. 1y

3/5 🌟 I liked this story. But that's about it. Nothing really stood out and although I liked how relatable it was at times and I enjoyed the pop culture references I felt like the character herself never really grew or evolved. I did really like the writing style but I feel overall that I'm missed something.

The illustrative style was a bit unappealing to me at first, but the story quickly drew me in. (Pun intended. 🤓) To realize you're queer in the strange microcosm of summer camp - wow. I rarely get into teen heartache stories, so I was mostly interested in Maggie's friendships, how she began articulating her feelings, and the ways people in her environment attempted to threaten or reward her for hiding those feelings. 💚💚💚
